Google Pushes Android 4.2 To AOSP; Releases Factory Images As Well

The Android engineers over at Google must be having a busy day today. After rolling out the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OTA update for the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7, and releasing the new Nexii devices, Google has also released the factory images of Android 4.2 for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10.

The company along pushed Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to AOSP. This means that developers can start working on integrating Android 4.2 in their ROMs.

There is a bad news, though. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean will not be available for the Nexus S and the Motorola XOOM. Both these devices will remain on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and will not be supported henceforth in future AOSP releases.

Apart from all this, Google has also made the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean SDK and NDK available for download for app developers. Last, but not the least, Google also updated the Device Art Generator to add support for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.

Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi Edition Tastes Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

After pushing Jelly Bean to AOSP, and releasing the OTA updates for the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S, Google has started rolling out the update for the first ever ‘true’ Android tablet, the Motorola XOOM. Before Verizon owners of the XOOM, if any, get excited please note that the update is only for the Wi-Fi variant of the tablet.

Apart from the Nexus 7, the Motorola XOOM is now the only tablet that runs on Jelly Bean. The new version of Android should bring with it a nice performance boost, all thanks to ‘Project Butter’. Other notable changes in Jelly Bean include an enhanced keyboard with next-word prediction, a new search experience, Google Now, some UI tweaks, improved notification bar with the ability to expand them, updated camera and gallery app with ‘film-roll’, off-line voice typing and much more.

Google has already start rolling out the update since late-Wednesday/early-Thursday, so chances are the OTA update should already be available for your XOOM. If not, sit tight and keep pressing that ‘Check for update’ option under ‘About Device’.

Verizon’s Motorola XOOM To Receive Ice Cream Sandwich On June 4th

Looks like Verizon is on a roll here! A couple of days before the big red carrier started rolling out the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy Nexus. Today, the carrier has announced that it will start rolling out the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Motorola XOOM from June 4th.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the XOOM will bring with it many new features including performance and stability improvements, improved speech-to-text technology, face unlock, a new keyboard, a new app drawer, an in-built photo editor with basic editing functionalities and more.

Motorola had already released the Android 4.0.4 update for the XOOM, but it was only for the Wi-Fi edition of the tablet. The updates for the 4G LTE + Wi-Fi edition had to go through further testing from Verizon, which is the main reason for the delay of the update. The testing took so much of time that Google was able to roll-out Android 4.0.4 for the Wi-Fi edition of the XOOM, while the 4G LTE variant was still stuck with Honeycomb.

Apple Suing Motorola Over Design of Xoom Tablet

Apple vs MotorolaApple recently has been involved in a number of patent lawsuits with competitors using the Android OS. A new discovery by FOSS Patents, reveals that Apple has also sued Motorola in Europe, claiming that the Motorola Xoom tablet infringes the design of Apple’s products. This was revealed in a court document filed in Germany and associated with the preliminary injuction given against Samsung yesterday banning the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Prior to or simultaneously with the motion for a preliminary injunction against Samsung, Apple also filed a complaint with the same court over the design of the Motorola Xoom tablet. Here’s a passage from the Samsung complaint that mentions two other lawsuits Apple instigated against iPad competitors — Motorola and a local German company named JAY-tech…

The filing does not say whether or not  Apple has pushed for a preliminary injunction against the sale of the Xoom in the European Union as it did for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, Apple is considering a  permanent injunction against Motorola’s Xoom.

In addition, the filing also notes that a preliminary injunction against  JAY-tech  was granted and further upheld “in its entirety” following a hearing.  JAY-tech last year began offering a budget 7-inch Android-based tablet, and the company is no longer selling the product.

Last year, Motorola filed a suit against Apple  claiming infringement of a series of 18 Motorola patents with a broad array of Mac and iOS products. Since then, the two companies have been quiet between each other but today’s  revelation suggests that  Apple has continued to go after Motorola.
