Speeding Ticket? Give Us All Your Cell Phone Data

The Michigan State Police have been testing a high-tech device that can be used to extract information from cell phones. The CelleBrite UFED is able to copy most of the data on over 2500 different mobile devices, often in less than 2 minutes. A sales brochure says this device offers the following:

cellebright-ufedThe UFED system extracts vital information from 95% of all cellular phones on the market today, including smartphones and PDA devices (Palm OS, Microsoft, Blackberry, Symbian, iPhone, and Google Android). Simple to use even in the field with no PC required, the UFED can easily store hundreds of phonebooks and content items onto an SD card or USB flash drive.

For nearly three years, the ACLU of Michigan (American Civil Liberties Union), has repeatedly asked what the State Police were doing with the UFED. So far, their FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests have been delayed or ignored by Michigan officials.

An ACLU spokesman says:

policemanThrough these many requests for information we have tried to establish whether these devices are being used legally. It’s telling that Michigan State Police would rather play this stalling game than respect the public’s right to know.

The ACLU fears that the next time you get stopped for speeding in Michigan, you’ll be handing over your cell phone, and your entire mobile history, to the nice officers.

View NSFW and Blocked Websites with Google Mobilizer

google-icon Last night, something strange happened. Somehow I ended up in a mobile version of my Gmail account while using a regular PC. I don’t recall how it happened exactly, but I noticed that whenever I clicked an outgoing link, the link began with a Google URL. Here’s what it looked like.

http://www.google.com/gwt/x?u= [website address]

When I viewed sites that began with this Google address, I noticed that most of the advertising was stripped away and even the images were being served by Google. In other words, I could be viewing images at any site, but my browser thought the images were coming from Google. That could be useful for people who are at a business or school which blocks certain web sites.

I did some research and found out that this service was called Google Mobilizer. Google Mobilizer was designed to make it easier to read websites on small screened mobile devices. Here’s the address and a glimpse of what the page looks like.

mobilizer-at-google

As you can see, it has a place for you to enter a web address and a place to do a Google search. Using either box will keep the resulting page in mobile mode. Even after you are on other sites, most of the links will still keep you in mobile mode.

I did notice that many websites simply will not work correctly in mobile view. Any site that requires Javascript or Adobe Flash may not work correctly. For instance, neither MSN Hotmail, nor Youtube worked for me in this mode. However, most blog sites worked just fine, and most Google services seemed to recognize it automatically and adapt. Here’s what Techie Buzz looks like when mobilized.

Despite the fact that Mobilizer was designed for small screens, this service might be useful for getting past workplace and school firewalls. Just keep in mind that it’s not going to work at all websites. It’s also not going to hide the addresses you visit from any monitoring services that your work or school have running.

How To Use iPhone 4 FaceTime Without WiFi Connection

The new was released earlier this month with a new feature called FaceTime which allows for video calls on the iPhone. However, FaceTime was only designed to work between two 4 on a WiFi network. This means that you cannot use FaceTime when you are on a 3G network.

But hold on, there is a way to use FaceTime without having a WiFi connection. To use FaceTime without a WiFi you will have to subscribe to AT&T internet tethering service, which will cost you around $15 extra every month.

Once you have enabled this service, you can follow the steps below, courtesy of the DeviceKnit blog.

Step 1: Turn on tethering in Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering on your iPhone 4 and connect it via USB. You’ll see a new iPhone USBconnection option pop up in the Network preference pane in System Preferences:

iPhone USB Connection

Step 2: Go to the Sharing preference pane, and turn on Internet Sharing to share your USB connection over WiFi/AirPort.

Now connect to the new connection you just created instead of using your iPhone 4 3G connection and you can use FaceTime on the go. The only downside to this trick is that you will have to have a laptop handy and pay $15 extra every month. If you don’t want to do that, an iPhone jailbreak for iPhone 4 might solve all your problems.

iPhone 4 Jailbreak Already Possible

An iPhone Dev team member @MuscleNerd recently posted an update congratulating @comex for developing another userland Jailbreak. Comex is the same person who developed the easy to use Spirit jailbreak for iPhone.

If you do not know, a userland jailbreak exploits the software or firmware on the phone and the exploit can be executed through a web browser by visiting a website, however, these kind of exploits can be patched out using firmware upgrades.

On the other hand, normal jailbreaks is usually at boot level and cannot be patched using a firmware upgrade and will require an hardware upgrade, which usually happens in newer versions of the device only.

Considering that an impending iOS 4.0.1 update coming on Monday to fix the Antennae issue with the newer devices do not expect a jailbreak for iPhone 4 to be released before that. We will keep you updated when a iPhone 4 jailbreak becomes available.
