Earlier today, Apple announced some incredible new updates to its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line of Macs during the WWDC 2012 keynote. However, they didn’t mention anything regarding the Mac Pro. The company has also quietly updated the Mac Pro via its website. The new Mac Pro has received a long awaited update, and the desktop now features Intel’s Xeon E5 processor.
The standard configuration 12-core Mac Pro offers two 2.4 gigahertz 6-core Intel Xeon E5645 processors and 12 megabytes of fully shared L3 cache per processor. The 12-core model starts at $3,799 with 12 gigabytes of memory, a 1-terabyte hard drive and ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics with 1 gigabyte of GDDR5 memory.
The quad core Mac Pro offers one 3.2 gigahertz quad-core Intel Xeon processor and 6 gigabytes of memory. It also features a 1-terabyte hard drive and ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 gigabyte of GDDR5 for $2,499. A Mac Pro server configuration is also available and features a 3.2 gigahertz quad-core Intel Xeon processor and 8 gigabytes of RAM standard. $500 more and it offers two 1-terabyte hard drives, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 gigabyte of GDDR5 RAM, and it comes installed with OS X Lion Server.
Just yesterday, it was reported that Apple will update nearly the entire Mac lineup at WWDC 2012. Today, MacRumors has discovered that after doing an inventory check with around 100 U.S. Apple retail stores, the availability for the entry-level stock Mac Pro appears out of stock for in-store pickup. This would further suggest that new Mac Pros will be revealed next week.
In fact, even flagship stores like the one in New York’s Grand Central Station are supposedly out of stock of all Mac Pro models. The same location will have the Server version of the tower in stock by June 9 while all others will be ready for pickup on June 12, AppleInsider reports.
Projected availability dates for orders placed today also vary. Some stores show availability on June 8 or 9 while others would not be able to offer a Mac Pro for pickup until June 12 or 13. Apple’s WWDC 2012 keynote will occur on next Monday, June 11th.
Bottom line is that if you are looking to purchase a new Mac, you should wait until the announcements are made on June 11th.
Yesterday, a report suggested that the new MacBook Air and Mac Pro part numbers had leaked. A correction has been made my 9to5Mac, and it seems that these numbers are for new Mac minis and White MacBooks and not for MacBook Airs and Mac Pros.
The new part numbers are:
MC914LL/A J59, BEST USA – White MacBook
MC936LL/A J40, ULTIMATE USA Mac mini Server
MC815LL/A J40I, BETTER USA Mac mini standard configuration
MC816LL/A J40, BEST USA Faster Mac mini
According to the original report, these were Mac Pro numbers. In addition, the MacBook Air part numbers in the original report are still considered to be accurate and are believed to be launching soon. We can assume that the new Mac Mini and white MacBook will adopt the latest Intel processors and Thunderbolt.
Rumors have suggested that a MacBook Air and Mac Pro refresh is imminent. Today, 9 to 5 Mac reports that a tipster has revealed that Apple will be releasing new MacBook Air and Mac Pro models this week along with OS X Lion. “Mr.X” is supposed to be a reliable tipster.
According to their tipster, Apple will be releasing four new MacBook Air models and will match up with the current lineup of two stock configurations each in the 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. The models numbers for these new MacBook Airs are:
MC965LL/A – K21, BETTER, BTR-USA
MC966LL/A – K21, BEST, BTR-USA
MC968LL/A – K78, BETTER, BTR-USA
MC969LL/A – K78, BEST, BTR-USA
The Mac Pro is also expected to get a refresh. Apple is expected to offer three standard stock configurations alongside a dedicated “server” configuration. The model numbers for the new Mac Pros are:
MC936LL/A – J40, ULTIMATE – USA
MC815LL/A – J40, BETTER – USA
MC816LL/A – J40, BEST – USA
MC914LL/A – J59, BEST – USA
Mr.X has not provided a specific release date, but according to rumors a launch date for July 14th is expected.
According to CNET’s Brian Tong, a refresh to the Mac Mini and Mac Pro lineup is right around the corner. His sources say that the refresh will occur in late July or August. In addition, he’s advising not buying a new Mac Mini or Mac Pro until then.
EXCLUSIVE: My sources tell me ALL NEW Next-Gen Mac Pros and Mac Minis will launch either end of July first week of August.
August more likely, Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt on both. NO details for specs or configurations given. DO NOT BUY! WAIT for the new Macs!
Tong says that the new Mac minis and Mac Pros will have Thunderbolt I/O and a Sandy Bridge Processor. No word on the specifications of the machines or configurations. A major redesign for the Mac mini is unlikely since the design was updated last summer. Brian Tong also reports that these new Macs will run Lion at first. He has previously accurately predicted the arrival of new iMacs before.
