T-Mobile G2X Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out Now!

LG has finally released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the T-Mobile branded G2X, which is basically the European version of Optimus 2x.

The Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update for the G2X will also squash other serious bugs with the handset especially the random reboot one. G2X owners, who have already installed the Gingerbread update on their handset, are reporting improvements in performance and stability of the phone. The battery life of the handset has also improved noticeably.

T_Mobile_G2X

Even though the software update brings Gingerbread to the G2X, it does NOT update the kernel to version 2.6.35.xx. The kernel remains the same as the one used in the Froyo, carrying the version number 2.6.32.xx. This means, that the G2X owners will be devoid of all the kernel related improvements which Gingerbread brought.

Sadly, the update can be installed only via LG’s software update application. The OTA update is supposed to go live sometime in the next couple of weeks. Until then, G2X owners will have to use their PC to update the handset.

Frankly, I would suggest every T-Mobile G2X and Optimus 2X owner to flash a custom ROM like CM7 on their handset. The true potential of the G2X/2X is only unleashed, after one installs a custom ROM on it.

LG Optimus Pro Revealed

LG Optimus ProA new Android phone by LG, the LG Optimus Pro has been spotted in Italy.

It seems to be inspired by the Motorola Droid Pro, and comes with a QWERTY keyboard and a 2.8 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels.

It will be powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will sport a 600 MHz or 800 MHz processor, like most other budget smartphones. It also has internal storage of 150 MB and comes with a 3.15 MP camera. It also offers Wi-Fi and GPS, and comes with a 1500 mAh battery.

The specifications are quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Pro while the design resembles the Motorola Droid Pro. It seems to have followed the industry naming convention for QWERTY candybar Android devices by appending a ‘Pro’ to its name.

It will be positioned as a budget Android device, and is aimed at Blackberry users who cannot do without a physical QWERTY keyboard. It has already been launched in Italy and is priced at €179.

LG Cuts Down Smartphone Sales Target by 20%

LG hasn’t seen much success with its Android smartphones, except for a few moderately successful ones like the dual core LG Optimus 2X or the budget LG Optimus One. It is, however, one of the largest phone manufacturers in the world.

Compared to LG, other manufacturers including Samsung and HTC have been successful in creating really popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S 2 and the HTC Sensation. The Samsung Galaxy 2 recently broke records by selling more than 3 million devices in 55 days.

Since LG doesn’t offer its smartphones at a significantly lower price point than Samsung or HTC, it hasn’t been able to attract customers from their camps.

Today, Park Jong Seok, the head of LG’s mobile business stated that LG expects to sell 24 million smartphones this year. This estimate is down 20% from the original estimate of 30 million units.

LG’s mobile phone division isn’t even breaking even right now; it had a $94 million operating loss in the first quarter of 2011. They don’t expect the mobile division to turn profitable in the second quarter as well.

Consumers are flocking to Samsung and Apple’s flagship devices – the Galaxy S 2 and the iPhone 4. LG recently launched the LG Optimus 3D, but it was overshadowed by the Samsung Galaxy S 2 soon after its launch.

LG is apparently working on a new device which will sport a 4.5 inch HD display. It may also launch the LG Optimus Pad in some international markets soon.

I wouldn’t be very bullish about LG’s prospects right now.

HTC Will NOT Be Locking Bootloaders On Their Devices From Now

HTC’s smartphone sales and profits have risen up sharply, with the growth of Android. Last year, HTC Android phones were among the most popular ones among the consumers as well as developers. Developers used to buy a HTC based Android phones, since it was easy to get root access and flash custom ROMs on their phones.

However, since the beginning of this year HTC changed their agenda and started shipping Android phones with encrypted boot loader. This meant that rooting and flashing custom ROMs on HTC phones became nearly impossible. The company received a lot criticism on their move of encrypting the boot loaders on their handset.

Many people who had previously thought of buying the HTC Sensation went ahead and got the Samsung Galaxy S II, just because the SGS II does not have a locked down boot loader.

A few days ago HTC said that they are reviewing their policy on locked down boot loaders. Today, HTC’s CEO Peter Chou announced that HTC has listened to its customer feedback, and they will no longer be locking down boot loaders on their devices.

This definitely is music to my ears, and as well as every developer out there. This move from HTC clearly proves that ignoring the developer community can lead to negative PR and lot of criticism (Psst Motorola).

However, HTC has not mentioned anything whether their current devices with locked boot loaders like the Sensation, Incredible S will be unlocked or not.

First Sony Ericsson, then Samsung and LG and now HTC all have realized that they are adversely going to affect the sales of their handsets by locking down its boot loader. Now, only if Motorola could realize this!
