LG Optimus 4X HD Announced; Packs In a Quad-Core Tegra 3 Processor Clocked at 1.5Ghz

Companies generally reveal their greatest and latest handsets at the MWC every year. However, it looks like LG thinks otherwise. The company has announced a slew of handsets in the last 4 days, and has announced another one today – the Optimus 4X HD.

The Optimus 4X HD is the successor to the Optimus 2X, the world’s first dual-core phone, and comes with a, yeah you guessed it right, Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor. All the four cores on the Tegra 3 SoC can run as high as up to 1.5GHz. The Optimus 4X HD is also pretty slim with a thickness of 8.9mm, and comes with a massive 4.7-inch IPS display with a 720p (1280×720) resolution. The phone still has capacitive keys, and not on-screen buttons like the Galaxy Nexus. The handset also packs in 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot.

All the usual connectivity features like SHSPA +21Mbps, GPS with A-GPS and the usual sensors are also present. At the back of the Optimus 4X is an 8MP snapper aided by an LED flash, and accompanied by a 1.3MP shooter in the front for video calling. Thankfully, LG has also packed in a massive 2150mAh batter inside the handset!

Also, the handset will be running on Ice Cream Sandwich with LG’s custom skin on top, to ruin the whole ICS experience. The company will announce more details about the Optimus 4X HD including its price and release date at MWC next week.

LG Unveils The Optimus Vu; It’s a Weird Shaped Galaxy Note Competitor

While the Dell Streak was a complete disaster, the Galaxy Note from Samsung has been selling pretty decently in various regions of the world. Seeing the success of this super-sized phone-cum-tablet, the Korean sibling of Samsung, LG has also released a Note competitor, the Optimus Vu.

The Optimus Vu has a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1024×768, and a DPI of 256PPI. The handset is quite a bit wider than the Note (90.4mm vs. 83mm), which gives this weird shaped phone an aspect ratio of 4:3. The handset is also pretty thin with a waistline of just 8.5mm.

Internally, the Vu packs in a Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, an Adreno 220 GPU, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal memory.  There is also an 8MP camera at the back of the Vu aided by an LED flash, and a 1.3MP camera in the front for video calling purposes. The Optimus Vu will first be launched in Korea and thus comes with all the local connectivity features like T-DMB along with the usual LTE, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth etc. The battery of the Optimus Vu is pretty small compared to that on the Galaxy Note though – 2080mAh vs. 2500mAh on the Note.

This weird shaped handset will be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with LG’s custom UI on top of it when launched, and will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update soon after. The Optimus Vu will be available under SK Telecom and LG+ carriers in South Korea by early March at an unknown price.

LG’s Upcoming Quad-Core Sporting Phone Quadrant Benchmark Score Leaks!

The LG Optimus 2X was the first dual-core SoC sporting phone to be released to the consumers all over the world. Now, LG is again looking to be the first Android handset manufacture to release the first world’s first quad-core processor sporting handset.

Paul O’Brien of MoDaCo has managed to get some information about the upcoming quad-core handset from LG. This handset from LG will be sporting a Tegra 3 processor, pack 1GB of RAM, a mammoth 4.7-inch screen with 720p HD resolution, 16GB of on-board storage, an 8MP camera in the rear and a 1.3MP snapper in the front, and lastly a massive 2000mAh battery!

Paul has also leaked some screenshots of the handset’s Quadrant score. The device scores a whopping 4412 points in the latest version of Quadrant, which is nearly double of what the Galaxy Nexus scores. From the screenshots, it also looks like that this un-named handset from LG will come with a nearly stock Ice Cream Sandwich build, with just a few minor tweaks from LG. Hopefully, this move from LG will allow the company to update its handsets to the latest version of Android faster.

LG Optimus 3D 2 Images and Specifications Leaked

LG was one of the first Android smartphone makers to launch 3D smartphones. Though 3D on smartphones hasn’t really caught on, LG is still pushing it through its latest devices.

Last month, we saw some details of a successor to the LG Optimus 3D leak out. Today, a Chinese news outlet has leaked some images and more details about the LG Optimus 3D 2.

The LG Optimus 3D 2 will be much slimmer than the Optimus 3D, with its tapering form factor having a width of 11.9 to 9.8 mm. Rumors suggest that it will be powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core TI processor and will sport a dual-5 MP camera which can capture 3D images.

It will likely have 8 GB of internal storage and will come with support for Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and NFC. It will supposedly run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is a shame considering that all the new Android smartphones coming in 2012 will likely run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It is expected to be launched in Korea first, in Q1 2012. It will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by the end of February.

Apple Has Become the Third Largest Mobile Phone Manufacturer

You know that company declared doomed many times? Yeah, that one. The one named after a fruit. Well, Apple has been moving up the charts in all categories. Just last week, it was reported that Apple had once again become the world’s largest smartphone maker. They dethroned copy-cat Samsung in order to do so.

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales in 4Q11 in Millions of Units (Source: IDC)

Today, research firm IDC revealed its estimates of worldwide mobile phone sales for the fourth quarter of and full-year of 2011. What’s most notable is that that Apple moved past LG to claim third place in the rankings for the first time. Since 2010, Apple was rapidly closing in on LG, but fell back into fifth place behind ZTE during the third quarter since customers held off in anticipation of a new iPhone. Turns out, the phone that nobody wanted (iPhone 4S) was enough to move Apple up in the year’s final quarter and by a large enough margin that it was able to pass LG in full-year numbers as well. LG saw shipments decrease from 30.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 17.7 million phones in the most recent quarter, while Chinese handset maker ZTE had 17.1 million.

IDC 4Q 2011 phones

Just last week, Apple reported a massive blowout quarter and reported that it sold 37.04 million iPhones. In addition, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.”
