Some major handset makers such as Samsung and Huawei are expected to announce a phone/tablet hybrid device with a large 6 inch display at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 in Las Vegas. However, the Indian mobile phone manufacturer Karbonn went a step ahead and launched the world’s first smartphone with a large 5.9 inch display!
The Karbonn A30 is a dual-SIM smartphone, which runs on the old Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Operating System. The price of this device is nowhere close to our favorite phablet, the Galaxy Note II. Karbonn has also pre-loaded some useful apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, PayTM, Saavn and Karbonn Smart.

Karbonn A30 features a 5.9 inch capacitive touchscreen display, sporting a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, 1 GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS, Dual-SIM (3G + 2G) capabilities, 8 megapixel auto focus rear camera with LED flash, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, Wi-Fi, 3G Connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, Google Play Store, A-GPS, 4 GB internal memory, MicroSD card slot, 32 GB expandable memory and a 2500 mAh battery.
Karbonn A30 comes with a price-tag of Rs. 12,990 (approx. $235). However, you can easily get this device from popular online retailer Saholic for just Rs. 11,500.
Karbonn is already known for launching low cost handsets in the Indian market. Now, the company went ahead and launched an entry-level Android tablet, the Karbonn Smart Tab 1. This device runs on the latest Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Operating System. The Karbonn Smart Tab 1 will compete with the recently launched Micromax Funbook. The Karbonn Smart Tab 1 runs on the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS, however the entry-level Karbonn A5, A7 and A9 runs on the old Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) Operating System. Karbonn A9 features a 9.7 cms WVGA display, sporting a resolution 480 x 800 pixels, 1 GHz processor, Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) Operating System, GPRS/EDGE, 3G Connectivity, Wi-Fi 801.11 b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth, 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, front-facing camera for video calls, 3.5 mm headset jack, FM Radio, 3 512 MB internal memory, MicroSD card slot, 32 GB expandable memory and a 1600 mAh battery.
The Karbonn A5 comes with a price tag of Rs.5,790, while the Karbonn A7 is available for Rs7,490. On the other hand, the powerful among the three devices, Karbonn A9 can be purchased for Rs.9,490.
Karbonn Mobiles has launched a new Android smartphone – the Karbonn A1. it is a budget Android smartphone priced at Rs. 6,999. It is quite similar to the Micromax A60, which was one of the first budget Android phones in India.
The Karbonn A1 comes with a 2.8 inch resistive touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo, and it’s unlikely to get an upgrade to Gingerbread.
It has a 3.2 MP camera and is powered by a 600 MHz processor. It also offers 3G and Bluetooth. Karbonn plans to launch three new Android smartphones by Diwali, priced under Rs. 10,000.
Karbonn currently has a 5% share of the Indian mobile handset market. It’s aiming for 10 million handset sales for the year. It is also planning to raise close to $125 million to fund its expansion plans.
We are looking at raising $125 million to fund our expansion plans. This will be done through PE investors and we will finalise plans in the next quarter. By the end of this quarter, there should be clarity on how we are going about it,said Karbonn Mobiles Executive Director, Mr Shashin Devsare.
Personally, I wouldn’t touch the phone with a stick. But if you want an Android smartphone in that budget range, you don’t have many other options.
