Apple iPhone 4 Jailbroken By Geohot

Geohot is one of the most popular guy in the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreak/unlock scene. He has successfully managed to hack the PlayStation 3 as well. However, Geohot has been mum right from the time the Apple iPhoneclip_image001 4 was announced, and released.

Now after quite a few months, Geohot has updated his blog. In the blog post, he says that he managed to jailbreak the iPhone 4 the day it landed on his doorsteps.

Here is what his blog post said:

Got one of these in the mail today and figured I’d give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don’t ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

As it is clear from the blog post, Geohot has clearly said that he won’t be stating a release date. Users can jailbreak iOS4 on iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch using PwnageTool 4.0.

iPhone 4 Jailbreak Already Possible

iPhone 4 was released on June 24 and a jailbreak for iPhone 4 did not take much time. jailbreak was done by the person who also developed the Spirit jailbreak for 3.1.3. The iPhone 4 jailbreak is Userland Jailbreak for on iPhone 4.

An iPhone Dev team member @MuscleNerd recently posted an update congratulating @comex for developing another userland Jailbreak. Comex is the same person who developed the easy to use Spirit jailbreak for iPhone.

If you do not know, a userland jailbreak exploits the software or firmware on the phone and the exploit can be executed through a web browser by visiting a website, however, these kind of exploits can be patched out using firmware upgrades.

On the other hand, normal jailbreaks is usually at boot level and cannot be patched using a firmware upgrade and will require an hardware upgrade, which usually happens in newer versions of the device only.

Considering that an impending iOS 4.0.1 update coming on Monday to fix the Antennae issue with the newer devices do not expect a jailbreak for iPhone 4 to be released before that. We will keep you updated when a iPhone 4 jailbreak becomes available.

iPhone 4 Jailbroken With Userland Jailbreak

Looks like it did not take much time for the to be jailbroken and the guy behind the Spirit jailbreak for 3.1.3 has successfully been able to run a Userland Jailbreak for on iPhone 4.

A recent update from @MuscleNerd, one of the guys behind the Dev team who develop iPhone jailbreaks recently posted a picture which shows a successful Userland Jailbreak on the iPhone 4 by @comex who developed Spirit.

On the other hand normal jailbreaks is usually at boot level and cannot be patched using a firmware upgrade and will require an hardware upgrade, which usually happens in newer versions of the device only.

This would mean that the iPhone 4 jailbreak is just around the corner, however, it might be delayed because of an impending iOS 4.0.1 update coming on Monday to fix the Antennae issue with the newer devices.

Disabling Multitasking and Wallpaper in iOS 4 on iPhone.. Not Possible Yet.. Unless…

If you have used Apple products for a while, you would by now have become very well acquainted with the fact that Apple does not provide options users want. However, it does provide options which they want and only they want.

ios4_logo

With the introduction of the multitasking feature in , Apple made a lot of people happy, happier than they would have been when multitasking first came out. However, here is the catch, you cannot disable Multitasking or wallpaper support on an which supports them.. duh.

Of course, Apple also put in restrictions for some users to not run Multitasking and Background Wallpaper for users who had anything lower than a iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. While I understand the fact that those devices did not get an option to enable those features, what beats me is the fact that Apple decided themselves that users will not be able to disable those features on supported devices unless they… jailbreak their devices.

Now this in itself sounds a bit crude, because users have no control over what they can do with their iPhone or iPod Touch, and unless Apple releases a new update with a breakthrough feature to disable multitasking and background wallpaper there is no way out unless you, well, jailbreak.

And yes, when Apple does release an update to disable multitasking and background wallpaper, a collective gasp will go around among Apple fanboys appreciating the fact that Apple was very generous in allowing them to disable features with on their devices which they should have been able to do in the first place itself.

Anyways enough of it, if you want to disable multitasking and background on your newly installed iOS 4 device, you can only do it with iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G which were not yet officially supported. Jailbreaks for iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 3G might take some more time to come out, so until then just keep praying that either a jailbreak comes out first, or Apple realizes that users have choices too and release an update to disable those features.

iPhone 4 Jailbreak/Unlock for iOS 4 Might Take Some Time

Over the past couple of days lot of things happened. Apple released and within a few hours an unlock for baseband 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04 was released, and within few more hours several jailbreaks were released.

jailbreak_iphone

However, if you are someone buying an and looking for a jailbreak or unlock, don’t expect it to come out soon. The jailbreaks available right now are limited to the 3G and iPod Touch 2G. However, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G running iOS 4 have yet to be jailbroken yet.

Considering how easy it was to create an unlock and jailbreak for the older devices, the newer devices should have been jailbroken by now too. However, they have not, and considering the number of updates in the past day, Apple has made it really hard for the iPhone Dev team and other folks working on jailbreaks and unlocks.

Earlier too, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G users had to wait a while before the Spirit jailbreak was made available, and this time will be no different. iPhone 4, which have already begun shipping and will also be available at Best Buy and Walmart starting tomorrow will most likely not see any jailbreaks or unlocks for a few days or weeks for that matter.

So, if you are anticipating a jailbreak and unlock for iPhone 4, you might have to wait a few days, or maybe few weeks before you can use the features Apple does not want you to. What about you, how long do you think before a jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone will become available to users?
