Steve Jobs has just announced a refresh of the Apple iPod line-up at the on-going iPod event in the Yerba Buena Centre of Arts in San Francisco. First up, Steve Jobs announced a brand new iPod Shuffle. The new iPod Shuffle looks pretty similar to its predecessor. This time around Apple has added Genius Mixes to the Shuffle as well. The Shuffle retains the small and wearable design of its predecessor, as well as the easy to use buttons.
Next in line is the iPod Nano. The new Nano looks totally different from its predecessor. The new Nano features a very small multi-touch enabled screen. Gone is the click wheel which was found in the older generation iPod Nano. The new iPod Nano also features a clip, volume buttons, FM Radio, Nike+, Pedometer and voice over. The screen of the Nano will also automatically rotate if the device is clipped in a non-standard direction.
Last but not the least is the iPod Touch. The new iPod Touch is basically an iPhone 4 without a GSM antenna. The new iPod Touch features Retina Display which we first saw on the iPhone 4. It is powered by a 1 GHz A4 Chip and packs in a 3-axis Gyro censor. The new iTouch will also come with a camera at its back and front. The camera at the back of the device will be able to record videos in 720p HD resolution. The front camera will allow the device to make video calls, dubbed FaceTimeby Apple using Wi-Fi.
The iPod Shuffle is capable of providing up to 15hours of continuous music playback, while the Nano can pump out music for up to 24 hours. The new iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and the iPod Touch will be up for sale next week and are already up for pre-order. The new iPod Shuffle costs $49 and will be available in five colors.
The iPod Nano will be available in seven new colors and the 8GB model will sell for $149 while the 16GB version will sell for $179. The iPod Touch will be available in 8GB, 32GB and 64GB variants for $229, $299 and $399 respectively.
This is the 4th big event Apple is holding this year where they either announced a new device in the form of the iPad, iPhone 4 or free bumpers for iPhone 4 users. And come September 1st, 2010 Apple will be holding a special music press event. The music or rock and roll event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts Theatre in San Francisco at 10 AM Pacific time.
Thanks to the secretive nature of Apple, it is not really clear what will be unveiled or said at this September 1 event, however, it is rumored that Apple will unveil new features in iTunes and also unleash the next-generation Apple TV dubbed iTV. Apple may also unveil the new iPod Touch 4G which is rumored that the iPod Touch 4G may have a 5MP camera and support FaceTime.
Most of the Apple events do not allow live streaming so it almost impossible to know what’s really going on without you being there. However, there are several press people who will be there for the event and update people about it live as the event unfolds.
Lucky folks from Engadget get to attend the conference live, which you can follow at Engadget Live. More options to get updates on the Apple iPhone 4 press conference will be added once they become available, we will also try to add some video streams if they are available later on.
Apple recently released iOS 4.0.2 to patch an exploit used by Jailbreakme.com to jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices. However, the dev team has been silent on a jailbreak or unlock for the latest iOS, until today.
Earlier today, the dev team officially announced that they will not be working on a jailbreak or unlock for iOS 4.0.2 and will instead focus on doing the same for iOS 4.1. Jailbreaks for iOS 4.1 beta is already available and there are several ways in which you can jailbreak you device.
The reason given by the dev team seems pretty reasonable:
Now it’s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. They’re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?
No, there won’t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the cat & mousewith Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, the only winning move is not to play.
So this means that if you have upgraded to iOS 4.0.2, you will have to wait till iOS 4.1 is released in order to be able to jailbreak and unlock your iDevice. However, if you had backed up your SHSH blobs, you can restore/downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to an earlier version.
Apple has just sent out press invites to several websites about an Apple event which will take place on September 1, 2010 at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts Theatre in San Francisco at 10 AM Pacific time.
However, there is no confirmed news on what the event would be about. However, it could be about the iTV device which is the next generation Apple TV, new features in iTunes and even the new iPod Touch 4G. It is rumored that the iPod Touch 4G may have a 5MP camera and support FaceTime.
There are several speculations on what the event will be about, however, there is no conclusive way to predict what surprise Steve Jobs might spring upon us this time around. Mark your dates.
A few days ago Jailbreakme.com made it’s second appearance allowing users to jailbreak all Apple devices using Safari. The new jailbreak for iPod Touch also works on the iPhone and iPad on every model available out there. This includes iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 2G and iPad 3.2.1.
If you are looking to jailbreak iPod Touch running any iOS version including iOS 4 or higher, open Safari on your device and visit Jailbreakme.com. You will be shown a screen similar to the one below where you can read through the information.
To start the iPod Touch jailbreak, just slide the arrow key over the text "Slide to jailbreak". Doing that will start the jailbreak process for the iPod Touch. It will take a few minutes to complete the jailbreak after which it will install the Cydia app on your iPod Touch.
Please note that Apple has released iOS 4.0.2 to patch PDF exploit, if you upgrade to iOS 4.0.2, the Jailbreakme.com site will no longer work for you. Also don’t forget to backup your SHSH blogs of iOS 4 or others iOS so that you can restore/recover the iPod Touch in future. By the way, jailbreaking an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad is completely legal according to US laws.
Sometimes when you use iTunes to sync your iPhone or iPod Touch, you might get a error at the end of the sync which says that certain apps could not be synched to the phone because of an unknown error 0xE8008001 occurred because of which the apps could not be installed on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
The error occurs when you try to directly install .IPA files on your iPhone or iPod Touch and because the Mobile Installation through iTunes does not support this.
In order to get rid of this error you will first of all have to jailbreak iPhone or jailbreak iPod Touch and then install a Cydia app called AppSync, which patches the Mobile Installation files and allows you to get rid of the above error thrown by iTunes. This problem also occurs on the recently released iOS 4.
If you do not know how to install the AppSync app, take a look at how to install AppSync on iPhone and iPod Touch.
If you have an jailbroken iPhone or jailbroken iPod Touch running iOS 4 or iOS 4.0.1 you will not be able to install apps using .ipa files. AppSync is a Cydia app which patches the Mobile Installation file on iOS allowing users to install .ipa files manually without having to use iTunes.
However, the older version of AppSync will not work on iOS 4 and you will have to install AppSync 4.0 on your iPhone or iPod Touch in order to directly install .ipa files on the device. You will need to add a new repository to Cydia in order for this to work, learn how to add new repository to Cydia.
To install AppSync 4.0 on your jailbroken iPhone or jailbroken iPod Touch, start Cydia and click on the “Manage” tab on the bottom. Now click the “Edit” button and then click on the “Add” button. This should bring up a screen where you can add a new repository to Cydia.
Enter http://cydia.hackulo.us in the textbox provided and click on the “Add Source” button. Now go back to Cydia and click the “Search” button at the bottom and search for “AppSync”, from the available options select “AppSync for OS 4.0″ and Install it.
That’s it you will now be able to install .IPA files to your iPhone or iPod Touch without having to use iTunes, please remember that you will need to jailbreak iPhone before you can install AppSync.
It was just over a week ago, we had told you that Geohot will be leaving the iPod Touch/iPhone and iPad jailbreak scene. Geohot even wrote a blog post about this on his blog. He had also deleted his twitter account, and has made his blog an invite only one. Geohot had however said that he will make any major announcement through his friends Mike Cohen twitter account. Now, today mikecohenn tweeted that:
What’s a good time to make it ra1n?
Many of the reputed blogs online are saying that it might be possible that Geohot will return under a new name. It is also possible that he will release a new tool that will work for all iTouch devices and all the different versions of iOS before leaving the modding community, once and for all.
It is too early to speculate anything, and only time will tell us what Geohot is up to. However, many people are still pinning their hope on Geohot to release a new jailbreak application for the iOS4.
Apple who have had a few big launches this year including the iPad and iPhone 4 have had a profitable 3rd quarter with a 78% increase in earnings. In the 3rd Quarter Apple made $15.7 billion in revenues and $3.25 billion in profits.
In the 3rd quarter, Apple sold 3.47 million Macs which was a 33% increase YoY. They also sold 8.4 million iPhone which was a 61% growth over iPhone sales from same quarter last year. Apple also sold 3.27 million iPad during this period and 9.41 million iPods including iPod Touch.
It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4,said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year.
Steve Jobs hinted that there will be more amazing new products coming this year, which is basically the new line of iPod Touch devices with 5MP camera and FaceTime which is expected in September and may also include other new products in the iPod family. The new devices may also include new Macs too.
Overall Apple generated over $4 billion cash during the quarter and are expecting about $18 billion revenue in the 4th quarter. This is definitely a good quarter for Apple and with the iPhone 4 just launched it would add to their revenue coffers.
In addition to the US revenue, Apple is all set to launch iPad in 9 more countries this Friday and also launch the iPhone 4 in 18 more countries shortly. Also, unlike the iPhone 3GS, Apple was also supposed to launch the iPhone 4 in India this September, however, it is now confirmed that Airtel will launch iPhone 4 in India in October.

This isn’t newnews, but I’ve covered a few other eReader apps lately. I decided to try out the eReader apps that Barnes and Noble is offering.
I’m sure you’ve heard of BN. They’ve been in the book business for years. Currently they have a bookstore online at barnesandnoble.com. Here’s a screenshot:
They also have a portable eReader device called the Nook similar to the Amazon Kindle and the Borders Kobo. Here’s what the Nook looks like:
If you already have one of the following; iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry, PC or Mac, then you can download and run one of the free BN eReader apps. I recently tried out the PC version of the BN Reader. Here are two screenshots for you.
The BN eReader app for the PC doesn’t seem to have built in access to the online store. Instead, when you click on the store, it launches your default web browser to visit there. I don’t know if it works that way on other devices such as the iPad. ‘
Other than that, it seems to be just as easy to use as all of the other eReader applications I’ve tried.
If you like to read and you like Barnes and Noble stores, the Nook and the free BN Reader apps are going to be good tools for you.
