Borders Has a New eBook Store, eReader and Apps

Recently, I told you how to grab plenty of eBooks from Amazon and read them in the free Kindle apps. I had also told you previously how to access thousands of free eBooks using FBReader. I’m not lying when I tell you that I have plenty of stuff to read. Despite that, I was pleased to see that the well known Borders book store was opening an online Borders eBook store. Can they compete with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Books-a-Million and maybe (in the future) Google?

Borders has a little eBook reader named the Kobo, for about $150. It will let you shop, order and read the eBooks over any Wifi connection. It’s very cute and weighs less than 8 ounces. It’s size makes it easy to bring along anywhere you go. The 6-inch display should make reading fairly comfortable.

This last Christmas, my daughter gave me a Borders gift card. At the time, I had no idea if I would ever use it. As soon as I found out that Borders went online, I went out and bought my Christmas present and started reading it in the free Kobo eReader app.

The eReader app isn’t complicated, it’s easy to use and it’s also available on several platforms: PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Android.

It’s not so cute, but it does allow you to shop, order and read all the eBooks in the Borders eBook store. Here you can see what it looks like on my Windows netbook (screen rotated by iRotate).

Will the Borders eBook store be a big hit? I can’t say for sure, but I’m enjoying it until my gift card runs out of money. I love to read :)

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak and iOS 4.1 Unlock Might Come Out Soon

ios4_logo

However, the Dev team has been recently able to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 running the . They have also managed to Unlock iOS 4 on Multiple Basebands and also unlock iPhone 3GS running iOS 4 with Blacksn0w. When Apple released iOS 4 last month, jailbreaks were available for the Golden Master firmware within a couple of days, so this suggests that Jailbreak and unlock for iOS 4.1 shouldn’t take much long too.

Currently there are several iOS 4 jailbreaks available, these include several software created by the Dev Team and others, namely PwnageToo for Jailbreaking iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS and 3G – PwnageTool works only on previously jailbroken iPhone 3GS having an old bootrom. Redsn0w for jailbreaking iOS 4 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G/2G amongst others.

Right now there is not concrete news from the Dev Team or other iPhone jailbreak developers as to whether they are working on updating the software to work with iOS 4.1. Nevertheless, it is a bit early to say anything since this is still beta software and Apple may go through several iterations before they release iOS 4.1 to public.

We will keep an eye on new developments regarding Jailbreaking iOS 4.1 and  Unlocking iOS 4.1 and post the news as we come across them. Till then keep your fingers crosses and subscribe to our Mobile News to keep an eye on updates.

Download iOS 4.1 For iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS/3G and iPod Touch

Apple has released an updated version of named as iOS 4.1 beta for , 3GS, iPhone 3G, 3G and iPod Touch 2G. The new version has several changes which are intended for developers to work with.

iOS 4.1

If you are an Apple Developer, you can download iOS 4.1 beta from the Apple developer site here to try out and build applications with. However, if you are an iPhone 4 user do not expect this to fix the Death Grip Antenna issue, we earlier reported that iOS 4.1 does not fix Antenna issues, so these issues are purely hardware related.

Also, if you have jailbroken iPhone, it is highly advisable to stay away from this update until the Dev team and others work on a new jailbreak for iOS 4.1. New features in iOS 4.1 are not very noticeable except for a change in the network signal bars.

iOS 4.1 also lays foundation for Game Center which has not yet launched. In addition to that, iOS 4.1 does not have support for the yet, so it iPad users may have to be content with using iOS 3.2 for now. Are your hands itching? Go ahead and download iOS 4.1 from the Apple Developer site here then.

Apple iPhone 4 Jailbroken By Geohot

Geohot is one of the most popular guy in the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreak/unlock scene. He has successfully managed to hack the PlayStation 3 as well. However, Geohot has been mum right from the time the Apple iPhoneclip_image001 4 was announced, and released.

Now after quite a few months, Geohot has updated his blog. In the blog post, he says that he managed to jailbreak the iPhone 4 the day it landed on his doorsteps.

Here is what his blog post said:

Got one of these in the mail today and figured I’d give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don’t ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

As it is clear from the blog post, Geohot has clearly said that he won’t be stating a release date. Users can jailbreak iOS4 on iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch using PwnageTool 4.0.

Next Generation iPod Touch To Sport A 5MP Camera And FaceTime

Last year before the Apple’s Rock n’ Roll event occurred there was a rumor that Apple will be releasing the next generation iPod Touch sporting a 2MP camera at its back. Instead, Apple released the new iPod Nano(s) with aApple iPod Touch camera. Now rumors have again cropped up that the next generation iPod Touch will be sporting a 5MP camera at its back. The next generation of the device will also be able to recording videos in 720p HD resolution.

The device will also feature an accelerometer and a gyroscope which will help in taking gaming to the next level on the iPod Touch. According to the slides of a presentation from John Lewis, it is also expected that the next generation iPod Touch will feature FaceTime. This also indicates that the device will have a front facing camera. FaceTime allows users to make video calls over Wi-Fi.

Apple is expected to release the next generation of iPods, and iPod Touch in the month of September. The source of this news is John Lewis, who is one of the biggest retailers in Britain.

Frash App Runs Flash on Jailbroken iPad

It is not a hidden secret that Steve Jobs hates Flash and won’t allow it to run on an , and . However, there have been several attempts at running Flash on the iPhone and iPad.

flash_logo

A new app called Frash which can run on jailbroken iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad does better than the earlier apps and allows users to access and view Flash content on their iDevices. The Frash app is available for downloads as a .deb file and can be installed on a Jailbroken iPad through Cydia.

According to Engadget, you cannot view video playback using the app currently, however, they were able to play games and view other simple Flash content. Though the missing video playback might be an issue, it is definitely promising that iPad users can at-least play games right now.

Hopefully the developer Comex will come up with an update for the app which will also allow users to view Flash videos. Excited to install the Frash app on the iPad and play games? Visit this Engadget post which has full instructions. You can also watch a video of the Frash app in action below on an iPad.

Jailbreak iPod Touch 3G, iPhone 3GS iOS 4 With Sn0wbreeze 1.7

Since was released, users who were using on 3G and 3GS weren’t able to jailbreak their devices when they were running the new bootrom. However, thanks to iH8sn0w, there is now a jailbreak available for iPod Touch 3G running iOS 4 on new bootroom and iPhone 3GS running iOS 4 on new bootrom.

Jailbreak iOS 4 with Sn0wbreeze 1.7

Sn0wbreeze 1.7 works on iPod Touch 2G (MC and non-MC models and iPod Touch 3G along with iPhone 3GS. In order to jailbreak iPhone 3GS you will require to be running iPhone OS 3.1.2 or have the SHSH blobs for iPhone OS 3.1.2.

The new sn0wbreeze jailbreak is a tethered one, which would mean that you will have to be connected to the laptop if the phone shuts down or the battery runs out and rerun the jailbreak again.

You can download the latest Sn0wbreeze jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3GS running older and newer bootroms by visiting this page. For more information on jailbreaking iPhone or iPod Touch visit our search for jailbreak iPhone.

Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS And iPod Touch 2G/3G With sn0wbreeze 1.7

iH8sn0w has just released a new version of the Sn0wbreeze jailbreaking application. We had told you yesterday that a new version of the Sn0wbreeze application is expected to be released today. The Sn0wbreeze 1.7ios4_logo application now supports iPhone 3GS based on older as well as newer bootroms, along with iPod Touch 2G (MC and non-MC models) and the iPod Touch 3G.

Sn0wbreeze v1.7 is the first jailbreaking application to support iPhone 3GS based on newer bootroms. However, these newer bootroms based iPhone 3GS must be running on iOS 3.1.2 or must have their iOS 3.1.2 SHSH blobs saved. Without either of these, users will not be able to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS on iOS4.

In addition, this jailbreak will be a tethered one, which means users need to connect their iPhone to a PC, whenever they turn it off, to turn it back on. Readers can find the step-by-step guide to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS here.

iOS 4 Jailbreak For Newer iPhone 3GS Bootroms Coming Soon

As of now only iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS can be jailbreak’d using sn0wbreeze. iPhone 3GS on the newer bootroms still cannot be jailbroken. However, iH8sn0w has successfully been able to jailbreak iPhone 3GS based on newer bootroms using Sn0wbreeze. Sadly, this pwning method is only possible if users already have iOS 3.1.2 SHSH blobs saved.

iH8sn0w has written a very detailed and complex tutorial on how to pawn iOS 4 on the newer bootrom based iPhone 3GS. Here is the link to the full tutorial. On a personal note, I would suggest newbie’s to stay away from trying the above method. Only experienced users should try the above method.

iH8sn0w will release a new update of this hack tomorrow for newer bootroms based iPhone 3GS, which will not require 3.1.2 SHSH blobs. Sadly, users must be running on iOS 3.1.2 to use this hack.

Update: Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G and iPod 2G running iOS 4 is now available. You will find more information on it here and here.

iOS 4 Is a Battery Drain For Older iPhone/iPod Touch

I had written a post before was officially released talking about how was a battery drain and whether or not you should upgrade to it. However, I did upgrade to iOS 4 and found it to be good feature wise. I have now been using the device for a couple of weeks and was disappointed with the battery performance after the switch.

iOS 4 Logo

Though iOS 4 has brought in a lot of nice changes like Folders and Multitasking, it also uses up battery pretty quickly even when the device is not being used. In my tests so far, the device holds up strictly OK and has a battery life of 7-8 hours in idle mode and approximately 3-4 hours with moderate use on an 3G. If you decide to play games or use heavy apps, the battery gets drained pretty quickly.

Now here is the problem, during the above tests, most of the apps I was using were not multitasking capable. With several apps already making use of the new multitasking feature, those numbers will go down even further.

Another problem I saw with my tests was that, if I left my device with 75%-80% battery overnight, the battery would run out in the morning. This is truly a pain since before the iPod Touch would run without  charge for 4-5 days. Now, I have to always remember to plug the device into the charging unit before I sleep. Also with heavy usage I have to usually keep the iPod Touch plugged into the charging unit.

This is definitely disappointing and like I had said it was something I had expected. You might see the same problem on an older . So if you want to use iOS4 you are better off doing it on an which has better battery life and was created specifically for iOS 4 features.

Kindle Application For The iPad, iPhone And iPod Touch Updated

Amazon today in a press announcement released an updated version of the Kindle Application for the iPad, iPhone and the iPod Touch. The updated Kindle application now supports embedding audio and video clips in Kindle books.

Amazon Logo

“We are excited to add this functionality to Kindle for iPad and Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Dorothy Nicholls, director, Amazon Kindle. “Readers will already find some Kindle Editions with audio/video clips in the Kindle Store today–from Rose’s Heavenly Cakes with video tips on preparing the perfect cake to Bird Songs with audio clips that relate the songs and calls to the birds’ appearances. This is just the beginning–we look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create for Kindle customers using the new functionality of the Kindle apps.”

Among the first books to take advantage of this new feature, include Rick Steves’ London, and Together We Cannot Fail. The Kindle application provides its users to access with the Kindle bookstore, which has more than 600,000 eBooks. The Kindle application is available for the iOS platform from Apple, Mac OS X, and Windows.

An Android version of the Kindle application is also expected to be released soon.

Spirit Jailbreak Application Updated To Support iTunes 9.2

The Spirit jailbreak application has been updated to support iTunes 9.2. Other than support for iTunes 9.2, no new features have been added. The Spirit application is one of the easiest way to jailbreak your iPhone/iPodios4_logo Touch or the iPad. Sadly, the Spirit application still does not support iOS4 and/or iPhone 4.

Currently, the Spirit application supports iOS 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 for iPhone 3GS, 3G, and the iPhone 2G. All version of iPod Touch are supported as well. For the iPad, iOS 3.2 is supported. Users who want to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS/3G or iPod Touch running on iOS4 can use either sn0wbreeze or PwnageTool 4.0. On a personal note, I would suggest iPhone 3G owners not to upgrade to iOS 4.

The iPhone 3G does not have enough horsepower to run iOS4 properly. If by chance, you have already updated your iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and want to go back to iOS 3.1.3, follow this guide.

iPhone 3194/1015 Error on Restore to 3.1.3 from iOS 4

Many users who were trying to downgrade iOS 4 to 3.1.3 have been facing a 3194 error. This error occurs when users try to restore the 3.1.3 firmware while downgrading from .

So is this issue fixable? Maybe. There was a forum post on TiPb which points users to a fix for this issue, apparently that is the same fix we listed in this post and it might not work when you are downgrading from iOS 4 to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

The problem actually lies with the fact that Apple signs the firmware now and you cannot upgrade or downgrade an iPhone using a firmware that Apple has not signed anymore, so this issue might go away if you use an older firmware which is signed by Apple.

Once again, using an Apple signed firmware may not fix this issue and we are actively researching on things that would help users to downgrade their iPhone or running iOS 4 to iPhone OS 3.1.3.
