iPhone Dev. Team Blogs About Geohot’s Limera1n Exploit, Updated Redsn0w And iOS4.2.x Jailbreaking

The iPhone Dev. team has explained in a pretty lengthy blog post about Geohot’s limera1n exploit for the iTouch devices, updated version of redsn0w, iOS 4.2 and unlocking your iTouch device on iOS4.2. First and foremost, Geohot’s limera1n exploit is capable of jailbreak-ing all iTouch devices on any iOS version.

The latest version of redsn0w incorporates the limera1n exploits along with custom boot logos for the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod 2G devices and an option to apply DFU’ button in PwnageTool. iTouch device owners who have unlocked their device are recommended not to tinker around with any of the latest exploits until an easier method comes out.

If users make any mistake, they might lose their unlock permanently. The blog post also mentions that the iOS 4.2.x jailbreak is untethered at the moment. Users need to wait until @comex manages to come up with a way to untether it.

For now, only the iPhone 3G, older bootrom based iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC) can be untethered jailbreak by redsn0w on iOS4.2.x.

Gmail Enhances iPhone Experience

I have a and use the Safari browser to read emails from my account at times. The experience has been far from what I would like so far, but that changed with new rollouts from the Gmail Mobile team for .

Gmail iPhone Fixed Toolbar

One of the most annoying things in Gmail for iPhone was the scrolling toolbar, which has now been replaced by a fixed toolbar at the top of the page. Another interesting change is the scrolling speed which is now faster than earlier and makes it easier to navigate through large emails.

Though these changes have been subtle, I definitely like the new experience and would prefer it over the earlier version any day. Have you visited Gmail on your iPhone or iPod Touch recently? Is the experience better than earlier. Do let me know through your comments.

New iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle Lands in India, No Sign of iPhone 4 Yet

Of late, you might have seen several news and blogs saying that would be coming to India soon. However, let me break the news to you. Apple 4 might take a few more weeks or months to land on Indian shores. How do I know it is beyond what this post is about.

Apple Store India

If you might ask why, I will just elaborate by saying that they don’t have a lucrative business in India to start selling their devices. With a high price range of about INR 35,000 to INR 40,000, the device is out of bounds for several users. Even when iPhone first launched in India, there were hardly 1000-4000 buyers, that in itself is deterrent to the company. Most of the iPhone and iPod Touch users in India have bought their devices through the grey channel and from out of the country.

If Apple does sell 1,00,000 units in India, their margin would be somewhere around 10%. Considering the import duty and other marketing costs, the profit is minimal. If you take all of this into consideration, Apple would not even consider bringing the iPhone 4 into Indian markets altogether, but they will in course of time.

If you do want to get your hands on an Apple device, the new , iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle are available at the Apple India Store now at Apple.co.in/store, go ahead and book yours, but don’t expect to see an iPhone 4 at your door for the next few months at least.

Limera1n Released; Jailbreaks Your iTouch For Life!

It was just yesterday that we told you about Geohot making a comeback to the iTouch jailbreaking scene with limera1n. Today, Geohot has released his latest jailbreaking tool limera1n. The application will allow users to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad (3.2), iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4G running on iOS 4.0/4.1. limera1n is an untethered jailbreak (thanks to comex) which will jailbreak your iTouch device for life. As of now, the application is available only for Windows with the Mac version coming soon. Limera1n.jpg

The application should technically also support Apple TV. However, due to the release of limera1n the Chronic Dev team had to push back their release of GreenPois0n. As stated earlierlimera1n and GreenPois0n use different boot rom exploits to jailbreak the various iTouch devices from Apple.

The Chronic Dev team did this because they did not want to waste’ the SHAtter’ boot rom exploit and let Apple win the cat and mouse’ game.

Convert your iPhone/iPod Touch Or Any WiFi Enabled gadget to foobar2000 Remote

Background:

I have a WiFi network setup which covers my apartment. I’m a music buff as well, and music is almost always playing while I’m working/browsing.

Now more often than not, I would be generally working on my office laptop – testing/ coding/ documentation / something of that sort and my music collection is on my personal laptop. I’ve often wanted to control the music – skip it/ pause / jump to specific songs, and started about searching the best way to do so.

The most obvious solution was to use the Remote app for the iPhone/ iPod Touch. There was a slight problem with this. Remote app uses Bonjour, and that means I’d have to use iTunes as my media player. For the record – I hate iTunes. It’s a POS application which I’m forced to use for syncing my music and I try to use it sparingly. I love foobar2000. I started out searching for alternatives to Remote, and found this neat little plugin – foo_touchremote, but it was rather unpredictable and would crash foobar often. Another big problem was that I’d have to re authenticate foo_touchremote everytime I leave & rejoin my WiFi network – which is atleast 2-3 times a day. Very annoying.

That plus there would a dependency on the iPhone/ iPod Touch on the rare occasion that I’d have to give up my iPhone, so I started searching for more “open” (*snark*) solutions.

The thing which came to my mind when thinking about an “open” solution was use to an http server (plugin? ) so that any device with a semi-capable browser could handle this. After searching for a bit, I came across HTTP Control Plugin [foo_httpcontrol] which would be the foundation.

Going about doing this

So here’s how you set it up. Download the archive, and move foo_httpcontrol.dll file to your Program Files\\foobar2000\\components directory

Aqbmn.png

Copy the foo_httpcontrol_data directory to %appdata%\\foobar2000 directory ( %appdata% refers to Users\\AppData\\Roaming folder).

ufGqo.png

Grab any of the templates. Save the template folder under %appdata%\\foobar2000\\foo_httpcontrol_data folder.

3MKTX.png

Next, launch foobar2000. Goto File – > Preferences Menu.

HAThY.png

Click on HTTP Control to bring up the subpage.

OlSjx.png

Now, the screen maybe confusing but we really need to focus on “Listen on:” area, more than anything

OT5jm.png

Listen on allows you to define the IP address on which the server should run ( read: your computer). Now, before you rush off to enter your system IP address, remember couple of things:

  • The WiFi network is bound to be DHCP based, meaning the IP address is assigned automatically by the router
  • If you have multiple devices, the IP address is likely to changed. Meaning, that everytime the IP changes, you might have to stop and start the service.

You have 2 possible solutions to overcome this:

  • Let your router remain DHCP configured, but put up a static IP for your system. This way, your IP will never be assigned to any other devices
  • Some routers can reserve IP address and bind them to the MAC id. This way, when the system connects to the WiFi network, the router checks the MAC id and if a reservation is available, then assigns the IP. This is what I had done.

tBWlE.png

I’d recommend that you use the router’s DHCP reservation feature, else fallback to static IP assignment.

Right, back to foobar, enter the IP of your system and a random port. Put a check mark against “Start server” and click on Apply. Your server is ready.

aBpg9.png

Click on the open link to open your browser

XaBzG.png

So the basics are set. Use any device and point to your IP address. If you don;t want to type in the full IP address:port combination, copy that, and use a URL shortener like j.mp or bit.ly and set your custom name, and use that URL to control foobar2000.

As a bonus, if you have an iPhone/ iPod Touch, open the URL in Safari and use the “Add to Home screen” feature and make it act as an app as well.

4Eeks.png dWQGq.png Jq4qd.png

This is how it looks with the kevo template on my iPhone

qcsDb.png

If you’re paranoid about security, foo_httpcontrol allows you to restrict access to only specific IPs or even the standard username / password scheme

qLodF.png

At the bottom, of the screen you will see some advanced settings. – it’s recommended that you leave them as how it was configured.

cMyY6.png

The concept is pretty simple, and with this approach, you can convert any Wifi enabled device into your own music remote control.
