iOS5 – Everything You Need To Know About It

Apple has just announced the next major version of iOS at the ongoing WWDC. iOS5 is a major release for developers with more than 1500+ APIs and tools, as well as for general users with more than 200 new features.

Notification Center

First and foremost, Apple has finally gone ahead and over-hauled the notification system is iOS. The new notification style in iOS5 is called the Notification System, and can be accessed from anywhere by just swiping down the screen (Android style). The Notification center also takes some cues from the popular Mobile Notifier app from the Cydia App store. Apple has also updated the lock screen to display notifications and music control buttons.

Twitter Integration

Apple has also tightly integrated Twitter into iOS5. iOS device owners can simply sign-in to Twitter once under Settings and they are done! Their Twitter contacts will be linked to their phone contacts. Core apps of the iOS5 like iPhotos, Maps, and Safari etc. will also feature Twitter integration. Users can now share an image or a link to an article by simply tapping the Tweet button in iPhoto or Safari.

With iOS5, users can read magazines available on the newsstand right on their iTouch device. The Newsstand’ app will show users a list of all the available magazines, and will also download the latest magazines in the background for offline reading. The App Store will also get a dedicated category for the Newsstand magazines.

Upgraded Camera App

Apple has also made taking pictures and videos on the iPhone easier and quicker, with a shortcut of the camera app right on the lock screen. The volume up button on the iPhone will now act as a physical shutter button. Users can now pinch and zoom right inside the camera app and select a particular scene where they want to lock the focus to. The new version of iOS will also allow users to do some basic editing with their photos like cropping and red-eye reduction.

Safari, Game Center And Mail With New Features

Safari for iOS has also been revamped in iOS5. It now features tabbed browsing, and also looks similar to Safari for OS X. The new Safari Reader’ feature will strip down a webpage from all the junk and ads, and present the main article in a readable, scrollable text format. For example, a 20 page article can be stripped down to just one page by this feature in a simple scrollable text format. The new version of Safari also features Reading List’ which is similar to the popular Read It Later service. The Reading List’ also syncs across all iOS devices and OS X based devices.

The popular Mail app has also been upgraded in iOS5. The app now features drag able addresses, indentation control, S/MIME support, the ability to search within messages, and to flag messages. There is also a Swipe to Inbox gesture for the iPad.

iOS5 will also include a new To-Do list app called Reminders’. The app will be location aware and can trigger functions depending on a user’s location and the time.

Game Center for iOS has also been enhanced with new features. Users now have the ability to view friends of their friends, find new games and purchase them right from within Game Center. Game Center now also features the ability to play turn based games like Scrabble and Chess etc.

iMessage The BBM Killer

Apple is also introducing a new messaging system with iOS5 dubbed as iMessage’. This service is similar to BBM, and will be available for the iPad, iPod Touch and the iPhone. The app will allow users to share messages, images, and videos etc. and will work over Wi-Fi as well as 3G.

Users will also be provided with typing notifications, and the messages will be pushed to all the iOS devices of a user. The messages sent via iMessage will be totally encrypted for enhanced security.

Wireless Syncing and OTA Updates

With iOS5, iDevices will become true PC free devices or rather Post-PC devices. iOS5 will incorporate wireless syncing with iTunes over Wi-Fi, which will include syncing your music library and apps. iOS updates will also be pushed OTA (Over-The-Air) from now on, and they will only update the needed parts of the OS a la Symbian and Android. Also, when users first start their iOS device, they will be greeted with a setup screen instead of the Connect To iTunes screen.

iOS5 will also include multi-tasking gestures which we saw back in iOS4.2. iPad users will also get a new split keyboard for thumb typing; along with a new music app. Dictionary has also been integrated in the whole OS. Users can tap a word anywhere inside the OS to find its meaning. Other new features of iOS5 include AirPlay Mirroring, improved Facetime video call quality, typing shortcuts, and Emoji emoticons.

The developer’s tool has also been updated with new features and is available for download beginning from today itself. iOS5 will be available for the iPod Touch 3G and 4G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the iPad 1/2 sometime this fall.

Jailbreak iPhone 4/iPad/iPod Touch Running iOS 4.3.2

Apple recently rolled out iOS 4.3.2 for the iPad 1/2, iPod Touch 3G/4G and the iPhone 4. The update was a minor one and was mainly aimed at fixing bugs, and improving the battery life.

Thankfully, Apple did not patch the exploit used by hackers to untether’ jailbreak iOS 4.3.1. Now, @i0n1c has made changes in his jailbreak code so as to make it compatible with iOS 4.3.2.

The iPhone Dev. Team has also released an updated version of redsn0w incorporating the code. This means iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G/4G and iPad 1 owners can now jailbreak their device running iOS 4.3.2.

There is some problem jailbreaking the iPhone 4 with this version of redsn0w, so users need to wait until the Dev. Team releases a fix for it. Until then, they can use redsn0w to tether’ jailbreak their iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 users who have unlocked their handset using Ultrasn0w are recommended to stay away from updating to iOS 4.3.2. They should wait until an updated version of the app supporting iOS 4.3.2 is released.

iDevice jailbreaks can download the latest version of redsn0w from here.

Jailbreak For iPhone/iPad Running iOS 4.3.1 Released

The iPhone Dev. Team has just released a new jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1, about which we reported a couple of days ago.

The new jailbreak is an untethered one, unlike the previous jailbreak released for iOS 4.3.1. The new jailbreak supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G/4G, Apple TV 2G and iPad 1 running on the latest version of iOS.

The jailbreak is also available for all Windows and Mac owners via Redsn0w or PwnageTool. Readers can download the application from here.

iPhone 4 owners, who have unlocked their handsets using Ultrasn0w, need to wait until an updated version of the app comes out. Right now, Ultrasn0w unlock is incompatible with iOS 4.3.1.

Sadly, iPad 2 owners need to wait for a jailbreak, until a boot rom level exploit is found for their device.

Incidentally, the first version of PwnageTool was released on this very day, three years ago!

Download PwnageTool 4.1 To Jailbreak iPhone 4/iPod Touch

The iPhone Dev Team has finally released PwnageTool 4.1. The application uses Geohot’s boot rom exploit to build custom IPSW/firmware files for most of the iTouch devices out there. By creating custom firmwares, users can update their iTouch device to the latest firmware without upgrading their baseband. This will help them in preserving their unlock and update to the latest iOS as well.Pwnage_Tool

As of now, PwnageTool 4.1 supports the iPhone 3G, 3GS (Old as well as new boot roms) running on iOS 4.1 and the iPhone 4 running on iOS4.1 as well. The Apple iPad running on iOS 3.2.2 and Apple TV 2G running iOS 4.1 are supported as well. The iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G running iOS 4.1 are supported as well.

At the moment, PwnageTool 4.1 is available only for Mac. Users can read more about PwnageTool 4.1 here.

New iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle Lands in India, No Sign of iPhone 4 Yet

Of late, you might have seen several news and blogs saying that would be coming to India soon. However, let me break the news to you. Apple 4 might take a few more weeks or months to land on Indian shores. How do I know it is beyond what this post is about.

Apple Store India

If you might ask why, I will just elaborate by saying that they don’t have a lucrative business in India to start selling their devices. With a high price range of about INR 35,000 to INR 40,000, the device is out of bounds for several users. Even when iPhone first launched in India, there were hardly 1000-4000 buyers, that in itself is deterrent to the company. Most of the iPhone and iPod Touch users in India have bought their devices through the grey channel and from out of the country.

If Apple does sell 1,00,000 units in India, their margin would be somewhere around 10%. Considering the import duty and other marketing costs, the profit is minimal. If you take all of this into consideration, Apple would not even consider bringing the iPhone 4 into Indian markets altogether, but they will in course of time.

If you do want to get your hands on an Apple device, the new , iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle are available at the Apple India Store now at, go ahead and book yours, but don’t expect to see an iPhone 4 at your door for the next few months at least.

  • Retina Display (same display as in iPhone 4)
  • Front facing and rear facing camera
  • FaceTime
  • HD Video Recording
  • Game Center
  • 3 axis gyro
  • Apple’s A4 Chip

The 160GB iPod Classic has been priced at Rs. 15,200 INR.

Pre-Order iPod Touch 4G at Apple Store or Amazon

Earlier today, Apple announced the 4G with Retina display, FaceTime, video recording and Game Center. Apple has already begun accepting pre-orders for the iPod Touch 4G which will start shipping in one week. The best part about pre-ordering from the Apple store is that you will get a personal engraving at the back of the device, with text which you can personalize before the order.

iPod Touch 4G

Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the iPod Touch 4G 32GB model which is selling for $299, however, unlike Apple, Amazon does not charge you taxes, so you save a good 25-30$ on your order through Amazon.

There are no other iPod Touch 4G models available on Amazon though, so if you are looking to buy the 8GB or 64GB iPod Touch 4G models, you will only be able to do in on the Apple Store for now. Pre-order the 32GB iPod Touch 4G from Amazon.
