Unlocking iPhone is one of the toughest job for any developers, and several people including the Dev-Team do it for free. However, opportunists also pounce upon the situation and start offering iPhone unlocks for a price, albeit, they do not do any work as such and use the unlock codes provided for free by the Dev-Team and other iPhone jailbreak developers.
A new blog post on the iPhone Dev-Team blog warns users of new scams, where people are conning people into believing that they can unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3 on baseband 05.12 and 05.11. However, there is little truth in this as there is no unlock available for OS 3.1.3 right now.
Don’t fall for these scam sites! None of them have a 05.12 unlock, none have the 05.11 unlock working on 3.1.3, none have a 3.1.3 jailbreak for newer devices like the ipt3G. They’re trying to capitalize on your upgrade mistake, and they only need a very small percentage of people to fall for them to make their money and run.
According to an earlier report only 14% of users have upgraded to the OS 3.1.3, most of those who upgraded might have thought that unlock was already available.
So do stay away from the iPhone unlock scams for OS 3.1.3, as you may end up getting conned, or paying up for something which you can already get for free. Have you as an iPhone user paid for a unlock?

It has been 6 days since Apple released a new update to iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of OS 3.1.3, however, Apple Insider is reporting that only 14% have upgraded to the new OS version. The report was originally created by Medialets, a mobile ad serving network, which compared the hits to its advertising network after the OS upgrade was released.
One of the reasons for low number of upgrades might be that iPhone OS 3.1.3 does not carry any major changes, however, it could also suggest that several users might have been waiting for the iPhone Dev team to release an update to PwnageTool to jailbreak and unlock iPhone.
However, now that most of the jailbreaking software have been updated, this number will definitely grow further in the next few days. Have you upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.3 yet? If not, what is the reason for not upgrading to the latest OS. Do let me know through your comments.
A new version of the iPhone OS, version 3.1.3 is now available as an update for the iPhone and iPod Touch. To be able to update to the latest firmware, users will have to download iTunes 9.0.3.
The new update brings only a few fixes to the iPhone and iPod Touch which include:
- Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
- Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances
- Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard
iPhone OS 3.1.3 is available for all iPhone and iPod Touch models. You can either update your current iTunes or download a new version from apple.com/itunes in order to apply the new firmware to your device. If you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch all your changes will be wiped out, we will tell about tools which will allow you to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 in a future post.
Android the flagship mobile OS from Google, has made huge inroads in the the mobile market share by jumping 7%, claiming 27% share in the data available for November 2009. In October, Android OS had a market share of 20%. iPhone OS has been steady throughout both months with a 55% share in the smartphone market in US.
A 7% jump in one month is quite big, but that should be attributed to the number of phones that are now being launched with the Android OS, including the Motorola Droid. This number should further increase with the introduction of Nexus One and Sony Xperia X10, which are both scheduled to hit the markets next month.
However, Apple is also planning a major update in future with iPhone OS 4.0, which might just be speculation as of now. The data for the smartphone market share is collected by Admob, which is the largest advertising platform for smartphones. The data as of now is restricted to US markets only, however, this might be completely different for global markets as Nokia and Symbian still rule the rest of the world.
Looks like Apple and Google developers or testers spend a lot of time surfing Boy Genius Report. Going through their logs, BGR found traces of both iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 4.0.
However, don’t get pretty excited yet, browser user strings can be easily faked and you can almost add anything you want to it. If you are a programmer, I don’t even have to tell you that. However, if you want you can do this yourself too, read our earlier tutorial on Emulating mobile browsers in Firefox, and you can very well have a browser for iPhone 5.0 or iPhone OS 100.0.
On the hindsight, this might be a trick played by someone, since quite recently BGR picked up the Nexus One browser string from their logs. So all is well until you see some more specific news coming out for an update to the iPhone OS. Till then this is definitely fake, try fooling someone using the emulating trick from our earlier tutorial ;-).
