A couple of days ago, the folks behind PwnageTool released an updated version of the software which allowed jailbreaking iPhone 3GS/3G and iPod touch running on iOS 4. Now iH8sn0w has released an update for his jailbreaking application sn0wbreeze. The new version is numbered 1.6.1. The new version allows jailbreaking iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch. iPhone 3GS having the older bootroms are supported.
Newer bootroms based iPhone 3GS are still not supported. Users should keep in mind that the device must already be jailbroken beforehand. Sn0wbreeze will not be able to jailbreak an iPod Touch/iPhone that is not previously jailbroken. Sadly, neither iOS4 nor sn0wbreeze supports original iPhone and iPod Touch 2G.
In addition, users should keep in mind that the Spirit jailbreaking application is incompatible with sn0wbreeze. Here is the link to the sn0wbreeze application.
Apple will be releasing a free iOS4 update for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch this Monday, this will bring a lot of new features to your devices including multi-tasking, so are you ready?
However, before you upgrade, here is what you should know. iOS4 was specifically created with the iPhone 4 in mind, and for older devices it is a big battery drain. Here is a tweet one of my Twitter friends posted who is using iOS4 GM on an iPod touch.
So, with multitasking and wallpaper support, your older iDevice will drain battery much faster than the iPhone 4, which has a better and newer battery itself.
Again, you can save battery life by turning off Wi-Fi and lowering the brightness of the device, however, with normal usage it will only run for 3 hours or so.
This goes on to show that other than iPhone 4, the earlier iDevices were not created for multi-tasking and iOS4 update will definitely have a huge impact on it. Of course, iOS4 brings a lot of new features, but those features come at a cost, so upgrade only if you are certain about it, because thanks to Apple, there will be no rollback.
Note: Multitasking and Wallpaper support will be enabled by default in iPhone 3GS, however, you can enable it in other devices if you jailbreak iPhone using redsn0w.
The Facebook application for the iPhone/iPod Touch just got updated. The Facebook application is one of the most popular applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch in the Apple App Store. The updated Facebook application is numbered version 3.1.3. The new version fixes many bugs, as well as adds new features.
The new features of the application include :
* Users can now view videos posted by their friends on Facebook.
* Ability to view and write on walls of events.
* The width of the uploaded photos has now been increased to 720 pixels.
The bugs fix list includes :
* Fixed the bug in which the birthday view showed months in the wrong order.
* Removed the bug where users could not upload pictures smaller than a certain size.
* Fixed the broken photo album link in the News Feed.
What I would really like to see is a Facebook application for the iPad. Even though I can open Facebook from Safari on my iPad, I cannot comment on others status update because the commentbutton is missing. I guess this is due to some incompatibility. Hopefully, Facebook will solve this matter soon or release an iPad version of the Facebook application.
Steve has released the RC2 version of the Blacksn0w unlocks for iOS4. The RC2 version of blacksn0w is just a repackagedversion of the original iOS4 unlock released by geohot. The Blacksn0w RC2 also contains the binaries for 5.11.07 baseband for iPhone 3GS. The binary for 5.11.07 baseband was released by msft.guy a few days ago.
Use on Modem Firmware 05.11.07 ONLY!
V1.2: Support for 4.0 GM. Backwards compatible to 3.1.2/3 as well. V1.1: MyWi tethering fix
Geohot’s unlock for 3.1.2/3.1.3/4.0GM on the iPhone 3GS (and probably 3G). Please donate at http://blackra1n.com/ if you enjoy.
With 3.1.3 & 4.0 GM patch (when needed) by msft.guy. Packaged by Pushfix.info
This is an unofficial release but Geohot HAS given me permission to redistribute blacksn0w. All known issues with WiFi loss and boot loops seem to be fixed. If it doesn’t work for some reason, you should still get the SpringBoard. This allows you to uninstall if necessary. It is a little slower to boot because of the increased safety of the release. A 3GS boots to cell connection established in about 90 seconds in iOS 4 now (50% slower than 3.1.X).
Improvements may be made in the future.
The Blacksn0w RC2 unlock is only for iPhone 3GS on 05.11.07 baseband, with an old bootrom.
Here are the steps to unlock your iPhone 3GS running on iOS4.
The 3GS iOS4 bundle can be used to jailbreak devices running iOS4 GM on an iPhone 3GS. The bundle has been created by msft.guy who is also known for fixing the blacksn0w unlock for iPhone OS 3.1.3.
If you are a regular iPhone user, you might as well stay away from this as this is only for a GM release of the iOS4 and may not work on the final iOS4 version considering that Apple still has time to fix the loopholes in it. However, this just goes to show that a jailbreak for iOS4 will be available once it is released.
Steve Jobs announced the golden master candidate of the iOS4 for developers at the ongoing WWDC 2010. The Golden Master candidate of the iOS4 will be available effective immediately to all the developers. The final version of the iOS4 will be released sometime soon. Developers can download the golden master candidate of the iOS4 by logging in to their developer account.
Here is the link to download the iOS4 Golden Master firmware. The iOS4 brings many new features with it like multitasking, Folders, integrated Retina Displaysupport, and an updated camera and photos application.
The iOS4 will be available as a free update for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners. All iPod touch owners, except the first generation, are also eligible for a free update to the iOS4 update. The iOS4 update for these iDevices will be released on June 21st.
Sadly, Apple did not mention when the iPad will get some iOS4 love.
The Steve Jobs keynote at the WWDC 2010 just got over, and the highly anticipated iPhone 4 has been officiallyannounced. The new iPhone 4 is 28% slimmer than the previous generation iPhone. The device is only 9.3mm thick, and is arguably the thinnest smartphone on the planet right now. The iPhone 4 screen size at 3.5-inch is same as that of the iPhone 3GS, but packs in 4 times more the resolution.
Apple has used the Retina Displaytechnology on the iPhone 4. The Retina Displayuses an IPS panel for better color rendering, and viewing angles. The pixel density of the Retina Displayis 326 pixel per inch, which is 26 pixels more than what the human eye can differentiate. The demo of the Retina Displaywhich Steve Jobs gave surely looked impressive!
The new iPhone 4 also has a steel band running across the sides of the phone. This steel band is a part of the phone engineering as it acts as a part of the antenna system. The new iPhone 4 duly covers the connectivity field by offering quad band HSDPA/HSUPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth. The same A4 chip used on the iPad powers the iPhone 4.
The A4 chip has been made by Apple themselves, and it is definitely a powerhouse! The iPad redefined the meaning of fastthanks to this A4chip, and we can’t even imagine what wonders it will do under the iPhone 4G’s hood. Apple has also beefed up the battery capacity of the iPhone 4. Apple quotes the standby battery life of the device at 300 hours. The iPhone 4 will also feature dual microphones for noise cancellation.
The iPhone 4 will also be the first phone ever to sport a three-axis gyroscope. The gyroscope, accelerometer, and the GPS have been tied together to bring 6-axis motion gaming to the iPhone. The camera on the iPhone 4 has also been upgraded. The phone now features a 5MP camera with a LED flash at the back. It is also capable of recording HD videos (720p) at 30fps.
The device will be available in either black or white color, and in 16GB or 32GB storage capacities. The iPhone 4 will be up for pre-orders a week from today. The iPhone 4 16GB version will cost $199, while the 32GB version will set you back by $299. The price of the iPhone 3GS has also been reduced to $99. The device will go on sale from June 24th in the U.S. The iPhone 4 will be available in 88 countries, by the month of September.
Skype has just launched a new version of the Skype application for the iPhone. The new application version is numbered v2.0, and enables free voice calls on the iPhone over the 3G network. The new Skype application now works over 3G network as well, unlike the previous version that only worked using Wi-Fi hot spots.
Skype has also made Skype-to-Skype phone calls over 3G free until the month of August. Skype-to-Skype calls made over Wi-Fi still remain free. The updated version of the application also features a better call quality indicator. The application start-up time has also been decreased. The call quality will be near CD like on the iPhone 3GS and on the 2nd generation iPod Touch.
Users can download the latest version of the Skype application from the Apple AppStore right away.
With the anticipation of the release of iPhone 4G next month at WWDC 2010, the iPhone 3GS will slow but surely lose its charm since people would rather wait to get the next generation device rather than buying an old device.
However, now Walmart is enticing users to buy an iPhone 3GS by dropping the price to $97 for a two year contract. For $97 users will get an iPhone 3GS 16GB phone with a binding 2 year contract with AT&T.
If you have been reading this blog, you would know how I had raised issues on how Apple was keen on dumping iPhone 3GS in other markets when it announced the iPhone 3GS in India.
So would you be prepared to buy an iPhone 3GS for $97 considering that an iPhone 4G is just around the corner, or would you pass the offer and rather buy an iPhone 4G instead. Do let me know through your comments.
The folks over at Spirit have released an untethered jailbreak for the iTouch devices from Apple. The untethered jailbreak is compatible with the iPhone OS 3.1.2, 3.1.3 and 3.2. The untethered jailbreak works only on activated iPod Touch/iPhone and iPads.
The official site has a word of caution for the iPad users saying On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia’s appearance is not final.)
The iPad users are recommended to make a backup before trying out the jailbreak. If things go wrong, the iPad users are supposed to use the backup to restore the device to a working state. The Spirit Jailbreak works only on the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS. The original iPhone users have been left out in the cold.
Please keep in mind that the Spirit jailbreak does not activate your iTouch device(s). Jailbreaking allows you to install 3rd party applications on your iTouch device which have not been approved by Apple.
