iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad Released

The iOS jailbreak developers have finally got a break through and have released an untethered jailbreak for non-A5 iOS devices running iOS 5.0.1.

@pod2g – the developer who found the Jailbreak exploit – gave the exploit to both the iPhone Dev team and the Chronic Dev Team a few days ago. Both the Dev. team have updated their respective apps – PwnageTool, redsn0w and the Cydia package.  The untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak is meant only for non-A5 devices from Apple which includes the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and the iPod Touch 3G/4G. Interested readers can find the required download link, and the  necessary  instructions over at this link.

The developer is also working hard on trying to port this exploit to the current generation A5 devices from Apple.

I would also encourage our readers to support the developer by donating a small amount to him via Paypal. The whole exploit was single handedly found and developed by @pod2g, and he has been working hard on it for quite a few months now. The donate link can be found at the above mentioned download link.

AT&T Raises Subsidized iPhone 3GS Price to $0.99

Along with the iPhone 4S unveiling in October, Apple also announced a new price for the iPhone 3GS; free with a two-year contract from AT&T. Smart move because this shows that Apple is taking on the lower-end Android handset market head-on.

iPhone 3GS 99cents

Now, AT&T has raised the price of the iPhone 3GS smartphone to $0.99. Not a very smart move. One possible explanation for this decision comes from an AT&T employee, according to  MacRumors:

I work at AT&T, this is being done to help prevent fraud as the 99 cents cannot be billed to your bill. It must be charged to a credit or bank issued debt card. Fraudsters are using stolen identities to steal these handsets … been an issue since they went free.

In fact, the two-year old iPhone 3GS has been second-best selling smartphone in the U.S. during the third quarter of this year, behind only its successor, the iPhone 4. I don’t understand how this is possible if Android is “winning”. Also, it should be noted that the iPhone 3GS is available for $0 with a two year contract at Apple Stores, Wal Marts, Best Buys, Radio Shacks, Targets, etc.

Bottom line is that over four years after the original iPhone, AT&T is still stupid. I still don’t see the need for a price raise…

Apple to Offer iPhone 3GS Free on Contract?

iPhone 3GS

Tomorrow’s iPhone event is just around the corner. Today, analyst Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets said he expects Apple to introduce a new iPhone this week, possibly an “iPhone 5″ or “iPhone 4S”. In addition, he doesn’t  expect Apple to introduce a second, cheaper iPhone model, but instead reduce the prices of its existing lineup.

In fact, he predicts that the iPhone 4 price will drop to the $99 subsidized price, and $499 without a contract. Abramsky also believes that  Apple will retain the iPhone 3GS in its lineup, offering it for free with a two-year carrier agreement, or $399 contract-free.

This would be a significant change from past years because Apple has usually discontinued its two-year-old iPhone models. Last year, when the iPhone 4 launched,  the iPhone 3GS was dropped to $99 with a contract, and later on the price was reduced to $49.

Last June, he expected Apple to offer the iPhone 3GS for free once the iPhone 5 launches.

We expect Apple to reduce the price of the prior iPhone 4 to $99 subsidized ($499 unsubsidized) and the iPhone 3GS to $0 subsidized ($399 unsubsidized, see 11/06/29 note for more detail and rationale); the prior iPhone 4 may be available only with 8GB memory.

Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhone and  iPod touch  on  October 4th  at 10 AM PST,  during a press event. Numerous rumors have suggested that these would be an iPhone 4Sand an  iPod touch  with 3G capabilities (which I don’t see happening).

Jailbreak iPad 2 and iPhone 4 Running iOS 4.3 Using JailbreakMe.com

Apple announced the iPad 2 way back in March this year. The second generation iPad boasts of a dual-core A5 processor, and was slimmer and lighter than its predecessor.

However, the iPad 2 was made insanely secure from jailbreaking by Apple. All the hardware level exploits used by the jailbreakers, were patched by Apple in iPad 2.

Nevertheless, popular hacker comex has finally released a way to jailbreak the iPad 2. The jailbreak works via a PDF exploit found, which was first discovered in 2010.

To jailbreak your iPad 2, owners just need to head over to JailbreakMe.com from their iDevice, and press the Free’ button on the site. Then, users need to select the Install button which comes up on the screen. The site will then load a PDF, which may crash Safari.

Afterwards, users will find the Cydia shortcut on their iOS home screen. Tap on free and install button only once, even if it may look like Safari is not responding.

This jailbreak is also compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G and 4G, running on iOS 4.3.3.

Yesterday at WWDC, Apple introduced the next major version of its mobile operating system iOS5 with more than 1500 new APIs and 200 new features.

iOS5 includes a new Notification Center, a new Camera app, more info on the lock screen, Wi-Fi sync with iTunes and much more. Readers can read this article to know all about iOS5.

iOS5

iOS5 will support iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3rd Gen and 4th gen along with the iPad 1/2. For the general consumers, iOS5 is expected to be released sometime during this fall, presumably with a new iPhone.

However, Apple has already released a beta of iOS5 for developers to develop apps on. The beta can be downloaded from here. Only developers who have a developer account with Apple can download the beta.

General users, who are interested in trying out iOS5 on their iDevice, should ask some iOS developer for help. If a developer registers a UDID of an iDevice, then he or she can legally install iOS5 on their device.

iOS5 – Everything You Need To Know About It

Apple has just announced the next major version of iOS at the ongoing WWDC. iOS5 is a major release for developers with more than 1500+ APIs and tools, as well as for general users with more than 200 new features.

Notification Center

First and foremost, Apple has finally gone ahead and over-hauled the notification system is iOS. The new notification style in iOS5 is called the Notification System, and can be accessed from anywhere by just swiping down the screen (Android style). The Notification center also takes some cues from the popular Mobile Notifier app from the Cydia App store. Apple has also updated the lock screen to display notifications and music control buttons.

Twitter Integration

Apple has also tightly integrated Twitter into iOS5. iOS device owners can simply sign-in to Twitter once under Settings and they are done! Their Twitter contacts will be linked to their phone contacts. Core apps of the iOS5 like iPhotos, Maps, and Safari etc. will also feature Twitter integration. Users can now share an image or a link to an article by simply tapping the Tweet button in iPhoto or Safari.

Newsstand

With iOS5, users can read magazines available on the newsstand right on their iTouch device. The Newsstand’ app will show users a list of all the available magazines, and will also download the latest magazines in the background for offline reading. The App Store will also get a dedicated category for the Newsstand magazines.

Upgraded Camera App

Apple has also made taking pictures and videos on the iPhone easier and quicker, with a shortcut of the camera app right on the lock screen. The volume up button on the iPhone will now act as a physical shutter button. Users can now pinch and zoom right inside the camera app and select a particular scene where they want to lock the focus to. The new version of iOS will also allow users to do some basic editing with their photos like cropping and red-eye reduction.

Safari, Game Center And Mail With New Features

Safari for iOS has also been revamped in iOS5. It now features tabbed browsing, and also looks similar to Safari for OS X. The new Safari Reader’ feature will strip down a webpage from all the junk and ads, and present the main article in a readable, scrollable text format. For example, a 20 page article can be stripped down to just one page by this feature in a simple scrollable text format. The new version of Safari also features Reading List’ which is similar to the popular Read It Later service. The Reading List’ also syncs across all iOS devices and OS X based devices.

The popular Mail app has also been upgraded in iOS5. The app now features drag able addresses, indentation control, S/MIME support, the ability to search within messages, and to flag messages. There is also a Swipe to Inbox gesture for the iPad.

iOS5 will also include a new To-Do list app called Reminders’. The app will be location aware and can trigger functions depending on a user’s location and the time.

Game Center for iOS has also been enhanced with new features. Users now have the ability to view friends of their friends, find new games and purchase them right from within Game Center. Game Center now also features the ability to play turn based games like Scrabble and Chess etc.

iMessage The BBM Killer

Apple is also introducing a new messaging system with iOS5 dubbed as iMessage’. This service is similar to BBM, and will be available for the iPad, iPod Touch and the iPhone. The app will allow users to share messages, images, and videos etc. and will work over Wi-Fi as well as 3G.

iMessage

Users will also be provided with typing notifications, and the messages will be pushed to all the iOS devices of a user. The messages sent via iMessage will be totally encrypted for enhanced security.

Wireless Syncing and OTA Updates

iOS5_Software_Updates

With iOS5, iDevices will become true PC free devices or rather Post-PC devices. iOS5 will incorporate wireless syncing with iTunes over Wi-Fi, which will include syncing your music library and apps. iOS updates will also be pushed OTA (Over-The-Air) from now on, and they will only update the needed parts of the OS a la Symbian and Android. Also, when users first start their iOS device, they will be greeted with a setup screen instead of the Connect To iTunes screen.

Miscellaneous

iOS5 will also include multi-tasking gestures which we saw back in iOS4.2. iPad users will also get a new split keyboard for thumb typing; along with a new music app. Dictionary has also been integrated in the whole OS. Users can tap a word anywhere inside the OS to find its meaning. Other new features of iOS5 include AirPlay Mirroring, improved Facetime video call quality, typing shortcuts, and Emoji emoticons.

Tethered Jailbreak For iPhone 4 and iPad Running iOS 4.3.1 Released

Apple released the iOS 4.3.1 a couple of days ago, to address battery life issues and graphical glitches with iPod Touch.

Now, within a day of its release, iOS 4.3.1 has been jailbroken by DjayB6. Sadly, the jailbreak is a tethered’ one at the moment. This means iTouch device owners will need to jailbreak their device, every time they reboot it.

iTouch_Jailbreak

As of now, the iOS 4.3.1 tethered’ jailbreak will only work for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G/4G, Apple TV 2G and iPad.

Owners of the latest generation Apple’s tablet, iPad 2, will have to wait for some more time before a jailbreak comes out for their device. Until then, they are recommended not to update their iOS version to 4.3.1.

Also, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners who have unlocked their handset using Ultrasn0w are recommended not to update to iOS 4.3.1. If they do so, their baseband version will be upgraded and they will lose the network unlock. The tethered’ jailbreak is only available for Mac OS X based PCs.

Hopefully, a Windows version will be released soon. The steps to jailbreak your iTouch device running iOS 4.3.1 can be found here.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4/iPad Running iOS 4.2.1 Using GreenPois0n

Up until now, iOS4.2.1 users could only tether’ jailbreak their iTouch device. A tethered’ jailbreak is a temporary jailbreak and will last only until a reboot. After rebooting, the jailbreak will be lost and the user will again need to jailbreak his iTouch using a PC/Mac. Now, the Chronic Dev. Team has finally released a tethered jailbreak for iTouch devices running iOS4.2.1.

GreenPois0n_Logo

Today, the Chronic Dev. Team tool GreenPois0n was updated to RC5 which will allow users to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G/4G and the iPad running on iOS 4.2.1. Unlike Redsn0w, users don’t need SHSH blobs of any previous iOS version to jailbreak. Users, who already have tethered’ jailbroken their iTouch, can directly use GreenPois0n to jailbreak their device.

iPhone 4 owners who are new to the jailbreaking scene and have unlocked their device are recommended to stay away from this jailbreak. They may accidentally update their baseband while updating to iOS 4.2.1 thus losing their unlock. They are suggested to use TinyUmbrella to preserve their baseband whilst upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.

Sadly, at the moment GreenPois0n is only available for Mac. A PC and Windows version is in the pipeline and should be coming soon. Mac owners simply need to download GreenPois0n from here and follow the on-screen instructions.

Word Lens : Magic Software Translates Languages in Real-time [Videos]

The blogosphere and twitterati are calling it “magic software”. If you think it’s surprising that even in this day and age, with all the capabilities of software, one can still consider some piece of software as magical, then you have to try it out to believe it.

Quest Visual, a startup comprising all of two people, are the ones behind all the buzz.

They have released an iPhone application called “Word Lens”. Word Lens is an Augmented Reality application which does language translation in real-time video. Real-time video translation is a difficult feat especially when done using the computing power of only an iPhone. To top this, Word Lens does not even require any network connectivity. So there is no time lag of getting information from the Internet and then displaying it, which is usually common for Augmented Reality applications.

If you are still not convinced, check out these videos of Otavio Good, one of the founders of Quest Visual , demoing “Word Lens”.

As per Otavio, the application is still in it’s initial version and needs a lot of improvement with text recognition , speed and the number of language it supports.Word Lens is currently supported on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 3G.

It is left to one’s imagination how useful this application can get. Right from reading restaurant menus to road signs, it can become an indispensable tool for tourists.

With plans to be able to look-up the words on say, Wikipedia, read fine-text accurately and support a lot more languages, I think this application which topped the charts on the App Store, sure has a lot of potential.

You can directly download Word Lens for the iPhone from here
