iOS 4.2.1 Unlock Released With PwnageTool 4.1.3 for iPhone 3G/3GS

The dev team has released a new unlocking tool for the to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS. PwnageTool 4.1.3 unlocks iPhone devices with baseband later than 05.13.04. The new hack for the AT+XMPP exploit requires users to upgrade to baseband 06.15.00 before attempting an unlock.

PwnageTool 4.1.3 will unlock devices which includes iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the 3G based . However, iPad users will have to download firmware 3.2.2 to upgrade their baseband.

Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to!  Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.

An unlock for is not yet available, however, this should be available in the next few weeks. Please note that there is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple.  So this will void your warranty so make your decisions very carefully.

This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1.  If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, the new redsn0w will handle 4.2.1 for you (in fact it covers 4.2.1 for all devices, even though some of them are still tethered at 4.2.1 until @comex can work some untethering magic).  iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 should not use this PwnageTool!  Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use the upcoming redsn0w to update your baseband.

Download PwnageTool 4.1.3 and read all the instructions here. Please note that you will have to jailbreak iPhone in order to use it, you can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 before you unlock your device.

Currently the unlock is only available for Mac users, but a Windows unlock should be on its way soon.

Rumor: iPad 2 Will Have Retina Display and FaceTime

Apple This was supposed to be the year of the tablets. However, if anything, it is turning out to be the year of the iPad. Baring Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, others failed to even make their presence felt. At this point, the tablet I have the most expectations from is Notion Ink’s Adam. However, it remains to be seen if the heavily delayed tablet from an inexperienced startup can truly deliver on its promises.

In the meanwhile, Apple is working to increase its lead with the iPad 2. According to the information plucked by Digitimes from a Chinese newspaper called Economy Daily News, the iPad 2 will feature a significantly improved hardware specification. Unsurprisingly, it will support Apple’s Facetime video calling technology. The 3-axis gyroscope introduced in iPhone 4 will also make an appearance, as will the iPhone’s famous Retina display. The newspaper also believes that the next generation tablet from Apple will have better mobility and USB ports.

Of course, we still have a good few months to go before iPad’s successor is announced. At the moment, it’s probably best to treat any leaked news about the iPad 2 with a generous dose of skepticism.

Developer of Angry Birds: “Really Big and New Project Underway”

Earlier in the week, we confirmed that Rovio Mobile is preparing to release Angry Birds Christmas edition for iPhone, iPad and Android. However, that’s not all that they have in store for us. Rovio had hinted that something else is in the pipe. We speculated that it might be the arrival of the “Mighty Eagle” on the Android. However, now it seems that it might be something entirely different.

Yes, Mighty Eagle is scheduled to make an appearance, as soon as Google gets its Market sorted out and enables in-app purchases. However, that is definitely not the big new thing Rovio is preparing for. It isn’t the console ports of Angry Birds either. TechCrunch Europe had speculated that Rovio might be working on something disruptive.

We can confirm that it is something that Rovio believes will be a big deal. Their exact words to us were, “There’s another REALLY big and new project underway”. Rovio is working on its own gaming network (think Xbox Live or Open Feint). However, that won’t be ready by 11th December, which is the Angry Birds day, and the date on which Rovio is expected to make the big announcement.

So exactly what is Rovio Mobile working on? They won’t tell us. However, it’s definitely not a new game, or mighty eagle for Android, or even Rovio’s gaming network. Let the guessing begin. What do you think Rovio is working on?

Richard Branson Launching "Project" A Magazine for iPad

British billionaire Richard Branson who also owns the Virgin Atlantic airline will be launching a magazine for called "Project" next week. This report comes within a week after media mogul Rupert Murdoch announced a similar newspaper deal with iPad.

Richard Branson

The magazine which will be named "Project" which will include entertainment, travel, business, design and international culture. Branson has always been on top of technology offering Wi-Fi technologies on most of its planes.  Branson will be unveiling the new "Project" magazine for iPad next Tuesday in New York City.

Apple’s iPad is one of the best device for reading and devouring content, so dedicated magazines and newspapers for the device definitely make sense. It would be interesting to see how many more publications decide to create iPad friendly offerings. 2011 will also see a host of based tablets and other OS tablets seeing the light of day, so most of these offerings may also make its way to them in future.

Angry Birds Christmas Edition for iPhone, iPad and Android Coming on Dec 11

Angry Birds has blitzkrieged the iTunes App Store, Android Market and several other app repositories, and it is showing no signs of slowing down. Rovio Mobile has stated that they don’t want to do a sequel, but they have been cleverly tapping into the cash cow that is Angry Birds with special holiday editions. After an immensely popular Halloween edition, Rovio is now preparing to release a special Christmas edition of Angry Birds.

According to the Finnish site MTV3 (and PocketLint), Angry Birds Christmas edition will be launched on Dec 11. Although the website confirms simultaneous releases for both iPhone and iPad, it is silent on the availability of the special edition on Android.

Given that Android users had missed out on the Halloween edition of Angry Birds, I requested confirmation from Rovio through Twitter. In response to my query regarding the availability of Angry Birds Christmas Edition on Android, @roviomobile tweeted back “and not only that;-)”, which pretty much confirms that Angry Birds Christmas Edition will be available on Android. The tweet also hints that something more is in the pipe for Android users. Based on the information available at hand, I am guessing that we will be seeing the “Mighty Eagle” make an appearance on Android. What do you think? Are you also an Angry Birds addict? Will you be willing to pay for a Christmas edition of Angry Birds?

Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w

Yesterday, Apple released the highly anticipated iOS 4.2.1 for the iPod Touch, iPhone and the iPad. The iOS4.2 update is a minor one for the iPod Touch and the iPhone but it brings a bucket load of changes for the iPad. With the iOS 4.2.1 update, the iPad gets AirPlay, AirPrint, Game Center and Multi-tasking etcetera.

Today, the iPhone Dev Team has released an updated version of Redsn0w which is capable of jailbreaking users’ iTouch device running on iOS 4.2. The only downside is that the jailbreak is a tethered one which means that users need to jailbreak their iTouch device again when they restart it. However, for the iPhone 3GS (older boot rom), iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC) this jailbreak is an untethered one.

Here are the steps to jailbreak your iTouch device using Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 :

Step 1: First and foremost, users need to update their iTouch device to iOS 4.2.1 using iTunes 10.1. They also need to download Redsn0w from here. You can also directly download iOS 4.2.1 IPSW.

Step 2: After that, users need to fire up Redsn0w and point it to the iOS 4.2.1 IPSW file. Once the IPSW file has been successfully identified by Redsn0w, users need to click on the Next’ button to proceed.

Step 5: After this, Redsn0w will work its magic and will jailbreak your iTouch device running iOS4.2.1.

Steve Jobs and Murdoch Launching First iPad Based Newspaper

If you thought iPad is only a platform to host third-party apps, thing again. Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch have been working, for quiet a few months now, to launch first ever tablet-based newspaper. The paper will be called Daily and will be exclusively available on iPad. That’s right, there will be no print or web edition, a fact that will help Murdoch sell the newspaper for a small fee of 99 cents per week.

Newscorp has hired a team of 100 journalists that will be working exclusively on the Daily out of the New York office. Murdoch, as reported, originally came up with the idea after reading a research report that people spend more time reading on their iPad then on the web. And adding to that the estimate of 40 million iPads by the end of 2011, Murdoch has very high hopes from this venture.

The newspaper is set to be launched in early 2011 and if everything goes right, it may be the answer to the recent worries of ailing newspaper industry around the world. Steve Jobs is reported to be a big fan of the media legend Murdoch has become and will be glad to include this additional revenue stream to the growing collection of iPad apps.
