Skype Brings Video Calling To iPhone, iPod Touch And iPad

Nearly a week ago, we had reported that Skype will soon be bringing video calling feature to the iPhone 4. Initially, it was expected that Skype will make this huge announcement at the upcoming CES 2011. However, the looks like the company has some other plans for CES as today they have released an updated version of Skype for iOS which enables video calling.

Here is a video demonstrating video calling on the iPhone 4 using Skype :

The updated application will allow iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th generation and iPhone 3GS owners to make video calls to Skype users all over the world using either Wi-Fi or 3G. iPhone 3GS owners need to use the camera at the back of their phone to broadcast their video though.

iPad and iPod Touch 3G owners can also use the application to receive video calls from other Skype users. Obviously, owners of these devices can’t make video calls due to the lack of any kind of camera on the device. Here is the link to the announcement from Skype themselves.

Hopefully, Skype will announce an updated version of their application at the upcoming CES which will bring video calling to Android as well.

Best Mobile Apps Of the Week for iOS, Android and Symbian – #4

Welcome to the fourth edition of the Best Mobile Apps of the Week For iOS, Symbian and Android. In this edition of BMATW (Best Mobile Apps of the Week), we will be introducing our readers to a very useful Backup’ application for Android, a barcode and a QR code scanner for Symbian and a very popular remote access application for iOS.

Below are the featured mobile apps of the week for iOS, Symbian and Android:

TeamViewer (iOS)

I don’t think I need to introduce our readers to TeamViewer. TeamViewer is a very popular multi-platform Remote Access application. It allows users to remotely control their computer from any part of the world. The best part of TeamViewer is that it’s available for free! TeamViewer is available for iPod Touch/iPhone as well as for the iPad.

The app also makes use of multi-touch gestures like pinch-to-zoom. A Pro version of TeamViewer is also available which provides unlimited access to any remote computers.

The Pro version of TeamViewer for the iPod Touch/iPhone costs a whopping $99.99 while the iPad version will set you back by $139.99. To remotely access their computer, users need to make sure that they have the TeamViewer client installed on their PC as well. iOS device owners can download TeamViewer from here.

UpCode (Symbian)

UpCode is a barcode and a QR code reader for the Symbian platform as well as for Java based Nokia handsets. Barcodes are optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows certain data on certain products’ as defined on Wikipedia. A QR Code is similar to a barcode except that it is basically a matrix code or a two-dimensional bar code.

UpCode

To scan a barcode or a QR code for data, users need to fire up UpCode on their Symbian handset and point the camera towards the QR code/barcode. The app will then decode the data and present the information on the screen. UpCode also supports some Nokia handsets like the Nokia 6020 which don’t have a camera. In this case, users are presented with a field where they enter the number or the word of the code to get the data.

Users can check here whether their Symbian or Java powered handset is supported or not.

Titanium Backup (Android)

Titanium Backup is a very handy application for Android users who love to flash Custom ROMs on their handset. Usually, flashing a custom ROM on your Android handset means that all the user related data and installed applications will be wiped out.

This is where Titanium Backup comes to the rescue. The app allows users to make a backup of all their installed application as well as their system data.

Titanium_Backup

The application also features other useful options like encrypting your apps backup, scheduling backups, Dalvik cache cleaner and integrating system application updates into the ROM. A free as well as a paid version of the Titanium Backup ($5.30) is available on the Android Market. The application requires root access to your Android handset so make sure that your handset is rooted before purchasing the paid version of Titanium Backup.

Best Mobile Apps Of the Week for iOS, Android and Symbian – #3

Welcome to our third edition of the Best Mobile Apps Of The Week. This week we would like to introduce our readers to a very popular Twitter app for the iOS as well as for Android.  Along with that, we would introduce our readers to a very popular VOIP client for Symbian.

Here are the featured mobile apps of the week for , and :

Twitter (iOS)

for /  is the official twitter client from the company itself Twitter. The app has a very slick UI and I especially love the sliding panels’ UI feature in Twitter for iPad. The app also supports push notifications and inline media display. I have been using Twitter for iPad right on my iPad since the day it was launched. The app literally blows the competition away!

Twitter_for_iPad

iOS owners can download Twitter For iPad/iPhone from the App Store for free.

Skype (Symbian)

Skype is one of the most popular VOIP services out there. The company also has an official Skype client for all the major mobile OS including Symbian. Skype for Symbian allows users to make free calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world for free via Wi-Fi or 3G. It also allows Skype owners to chat for free.

Skype_Symbian

The company recently rolled out an updated version of Skype which supports the latest generation of Symbian phones like the Nokia N8, C7 and E5. The update also added SILK’ Skype’s own audio codec which helps improves voice quality on a low-bandwidth connection. Symbian owners can download Skype for their handset for free from here.

TweetDeck (Android)

is one of the most popular third party Twitter client for Windows. The app is also available for other major mobile platforms including Android. The Android version of TweetDeck has a great looking UI and functions really well. I personally switched to TweetDeck and have been using it ever since on my Galaxy S since the day it was released.

Tweetdeck_Android

The application also supports other major social networking sites like Facebook, Google Buzz and Foursquare. The application however does lack some features like no support for creating lists, no auto-fill while entering @username and some totally useless widgets. However, I am pretty sure the folks behind TweetDeck for Android will fix all these issues sooner than later. Android owners can download TweetDeck for free from the Android Market.

Best Mobile Apps Of the Week for iOS, Android and Symbian – #1

Welcome to the first edition of Best Mobile Apps Of The Week where we will feature some popular and useful apps for different mobile platforms. From now on, every Friday we will be introducing our readers to one new application for the , and platform. We may add any other platforms such as WP7, webOS and Maemo on popular demand. So if you guys want us to feature apps of any other OS drop in a comment and let us know.

Here are the featured of the week for iOS, Symbian and Android:

Remote (iOS)

If you own any of the iOS based devices, chances are you must be using iTunes to manage media and apps on it as well. If you use iTunes as your primary media player, then Remote is going to come in very handy for you. The application basically allows users to control media playback on their PC/Mac running iTunes using their iOS device.

Remote_iOS

However, for Remote to work users must have a Wi-Fi network and their PC/Mac must be connected to the same network as well. Users also need to enable the Home Sharing’ feature on iTunes and share their media library on the network.

iOS owners can download Remote from here.

Gravity (Symbian)

Gravity is among the few good applications available for the old sinking ship Symbian. Gravity is a combination of many apps into one. It is basically a Twitter and a social networking client. It supports Facebook, Foursquare and even acts as a great RSS reader by importing your feeds from Google Reader. The application is available for all the popular Symbian versions S60v3, S60v5 and Symbian^3.

Gravity

There is a 14-day trial version of the application available for download. The full version costs 10 Euros but is totally worth it. The developer of Gravity Janole is also very active on twitter and tries to solve all the problems which Gravity users face.

Symbian users can download Gravity from here.

Launcher Pro (Android)

One of the main reasons why Android is so popular is because it’s highly customizable. Users can customize nearly every aspect of the phone (software wise). It might be possible that you may not like the Launcher your phone manufacturer has shipped your phone it. Users can easily replace the default home launcher app in Android by downloading another one from the Android Market. Launcher Pro is arguably one of the best alternate home launcher app in the Android ecosystem.

LauncherPro-Plus-Android

The application is available for free but a paid version ($1.99) is available as well which adds a few nice features like Widget resizing, Sense Widgets and Gesture Swipes etc. However, the paid version is not available for download from the Android Market.

I will recommend all Android handset owners to try out Launcher Pro once. Not only is it fast, it offers some nice features as well like a 3D app drawer and a landscape mode home screen. The app also looks very sleek and users can easily customize the icons and the background used by the app.

So that’s it folks! I hope you liked the applications suggested by me in our first edition of Mobile Apps of the week.

Samsung Sells 1 Million Galaxy Tabs; Beats iPad Sales?

Samsung Galaxy TabIt has been less than 2 months since the Samsung Galaxy Tab was released, but it has already sold 1 million units worldwide. The Galaxy Tab is the best Android tablet around, so the numbers are not surprising.

Compared to the iPad, which sold 1 million units in exactly 28 days, the Galaxy Tab completed 1 million sales in slightly more than a month, as it first became available around the end of October. In the US though, which is probably its largest market, it became available only after November 10, so in a way, it might have beaten the iPad in terms of sales. Such a comparison is not exactly fair, because the Galaxy Tab is available in many more countries than the iPad, 64 to be precise.

The sales of the Galaxy Tab have been consistently great, despite the high pricing; in fact, it had sold 600,000 Galaxy Tab units by November 22, which means that it pushed out 400,000 Tabs in just 10 days.

Samsung has also increased its sales estimates to 1.5 million Galaxy Tabs by the end of 2010, but I wouldn’t find it surprising if it clears 2 million units by then, extrapolating from the current figures. With the Christmas holiday season in sight, it might even sell more.

Rumor: iPad 2 Camera Manufacturer Selected

AppleAlong with Microsoft’s Kinect, the iPad is quite possibly the most popular consumer electronic device of the year. It kick started an entire new segment virtually on its own. Over the past few months, we have seen dozens of tablets being launched by both big and small companies. Unfortunately, none of them have managed to offer strong competition to the iPad.

While others are busy playing catchup, Apple is already working on the iPad’s successor. Rumors about the iPad 2 have already begun to trickle in, mostly via Digitimes and other Chinese news sources. After disclosing that the successor to the highly successful iPad will feature a camera as well as Facetime support, Digitimes has also dug up the name of the manufacturer.

Largan Precision, a Chinese lens manufacturer, which also supplies lenses for the 5 megapixel camera for the iPhone, is the rumored manufacturer of iPad’s camera. The iPad 2 is expected to be launched in Q1 2011.
