iOS 4.3 Introduces Photo Booth, iPad 2 Gets Facetime

As expected, along with the iPad 2, Apple also unveiled iOS 4.3 today. Apple sold as many as 15 million tablets in 2010 and single-handedly kick-started a new genre of devices. In spite of being initially ridiculed for its seeming lack of functionality, the iPad “flummoxed” everyone, and went on to become one of the most desirable gadgets of 2010. One of the most significant contributors to the iPad’s success was its specially crafted iOS, which made the pre-Honeycomb Android tablets look ungainly. With iOS 4.3, Apple is moving on to the next level.

Multimedia is clearly the biggest area of focus in iOS 4.3. The iPad 2 features a front as well as a rear camera. In order to take advantage of them, Apple has ported its popular Photo Booth app. Like its desktop counterpart, Photo Booth for iPad will ship with dozens of fun effects, all of which can be previewed in real-time. Also included is Facetime – Apple’s popular video chatting application, which is already available for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

The new operating system for iPad also makes it easier to share content with other devices. Airplay, which offers an intuitive and easy way to stream photos, videos and audio to Apple TVs, speakers and other devices, has been improved and opened up to 3rd party apps. iTunes home sharing, which lets you stream and transfer multimedia content with up to five other devices on your local network, is now supported in iOS.

If you own an iPhone, you will be pleased to know that the OS update will add support for personal hotspot. This means that if you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi connection, you can share your iPhone’s connection with your iPad. This is undoubtedly a pretty neat feature. However, in typical Apple fashion, it has been restricted to the iPhone 4.

On the web browsing front, there is good news in the form of an improved Nitro JavaScript engine, which should give a speed boost to Safari. Apple has also partially backtracked on its decision to change the orientation lock switch into a mute button. In the updated iOS, the user will be able to choose what he wants to use the button for.

As previously confirmed by Apple, the new four and five finger multi-touch gestures seen in the iOS 4.3 beta have been removed from the the final release build. It’s not clear if they will be included in future builds, since Apple has stated that they only wanted to collect developer feedback on those gestures.

Just as expected, there are quite a few significant improvements in iOS 4.3, but nothing that is mind-blowing. This point update is more about evolution than revolution. iOS 4.3 for the iPad, iPhone (GSM) and the iPod will be released on March 11.

Apple Releases Smart Cover and HDMI Cable for iPad 2

Along with the iPad 2, Apple also introduced a couple of new accessories for the iPad 2 an HDMI out cable and a cover. The HDMI Out cable will allow users to mirror content from the iPad to their HDTV in full HD resolution, while charging the device!

The cable works with all existing apps and supports rotation as well. The cable will set back users by $39. However, it is the ‘Smart’ cover introduced by Apple for the iPad, which is truly a must have.

This new cover from Apple covers the front of the iPad, and when users open the cover, the cover automatically wakes up the iPad. The cover puts the iPad back to sleep when users put it back on. The cover is made up entirely from magnets, which automatically grasp the iPad 2 and auto-align themselves.

The inside of the cover features a micro-fiber cloth, which cleans the screen of the tablet, whenever you close it. The new cover will be available in five colors including pink, and will be made up of either polyurethane or leather. The polyurethane cover will set you back by $39, while the leather cover will cost users $69.

As of now, it is unknown whether this new ‘Smart’ cover from Apple will be compatible with the original iPad or not.

Apple To Preview iOS 5 At iPad 2 Event Next Week?

It was just a couple of days ago that Apple sent an invite to the media, inviting them to the unveiling of the iPad 2. The event is scheduled to take place next week on Wednesday i.e. on March 2.

Now, one of the highly reliable sources of Engadget reports that Apple may also preview the next version of iOS (v5, in all probability) and may even release the SDK to developers. At the moment, it is unclear as to what all changes the next ‘major’ version of iOS will include, but hopefully a new notification system will be on-board.

Apple will release the new iPad with iOS 4.3 which will feature new four or five fingers based multi-touch gestures for easier multi-tasking. Along with the new multi-touch gestures, iOS 4.3 will also bring mobile hotspot to the iPhone and the iPad (hopefully).

Engadget also reports that due to Engineering issuesthe iPad 2 won’t ship with a higher resolution screen. The microSD card slot has also been shelved from the iPad’s successor.

With a slew of Android 3.0 Honeycomb based tablets being released to the public, the iPad 2 sure needs to have more than beefed up specs to attract consumers.

Samsung to Unveil 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab Next Month

The Samsung Galaxy Tab was the first major Android tablet. It was launched last year and has sold over 2 million units since. Emboldened by its success, Samsung has already announced its successor – the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the Mobile World Congress.

It will be powered by much better hardware and comes with a bigger 10.1 inch display compared to the Galaxy Tab. However, that’s not all. According to a report by Yonhap News, Samsung is prepping to launch another version of the Galaxy Tab next month. It will have an 8.9 inch touchscreen display, and will be positioned below the 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab 2. It will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb, just like all the new Android tablets.

This rumor, if true, will position Samsung as the perfect Android competitor against Apple. With this launch, it will have devices to fight against all of Apple’s major devices and then some.

The Galaxy S against the iPhone 4, the Galaxy S 2 and the Infuse 4G against the iPhone 5, the Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the rumored Galaxy Tab 8.9 against the iPad and the iPad 2 (which, by the way, is supposed to be announced on March 2), and the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 and the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 against the iPod Touch.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is expected to be launched globally as early as next month.

‘The Daily’ iPad Newspaper Coming to Android Tablets

The DailyThe Daily, the first iPad only newspaper which was created specifically with tablet users in mind was launched with a lot of fanfare on February 2.

At its launch, Rupert Murdoch of News Corp had praised the iPad a lot – So we built The Daily completely from scratch — on the most innovative device to come about in my time — the iPad.

It launched along with a new feature for app developers – in-app subscriptions, which has been one of the most controversial features of the App Store, after Apple decided to take a 30% cut for all subscriptions purchased from within iOS apps.

Anyway, The Daily was supposed to be iPad exclusive for a long time, though Murdoch had announced that a version of Android tablets was coming soon. It seems that the Android version of The Daily may be here earlier than expected, probably by Spring 2011.

Sources have revealed that The Daily is slated to launch for Android tablets in Q2 2011, which is a bit surprising considering the amount of praise Murdoch showered on the iPad at the launch. In the end, it’s all about business, I guess.

The Daily has seen a lot of downloads so far, but it’s still in the free trial period. When the trial ends this week, we should know how popular The Daily really is.

iPad 2 Coming On March 2?

Looks like the rumors of the  arriving in April were not true after all. Kara Swisher from All Things Digital just posted a new scoop from trusted Apple sources that an iPad event will be held on March 2nd, 2011.

Apple iPad

iPad 2 rumors have been doing the rounds for few months now. Though the actual specifications are not know, it will most likely sport a camera, have Retina Display and also support FaceTime. Nevertheless, it is definitely an exciting day for Apple fans who have been waiting for a refresh for the iPad and have been probably saving up to get their hands on the device.
