Micromax W900 – Windows Smartphone for Just Rs. 7,000

Over the past year, the cheap smartphone category has been growing by leaps and bounds. Stylish phones like Samsung Corby managed to grab the imagination of the young generation and have become runaway hits. However, Micromax is taking a slightly different route and is concentrating on functionality over style.

Micromax W900 is an impressive offering, which runs on Windows Mobile 6.1. Under the hood of W900 lies a competent K3 Hi3611 460MHz processor coupled with 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM. The handset is bundled with a 2 GB microSD card; however, cards up to 16 GB are supported. Besides the standard Windows Mobile features such as Microsoft Office, Active Sync and Pocket SMS, W900 also includes some handy goodies such as Maps powered by MapmyIndia.

Sure, Micromax may not be able to offer the smooth experience we have come to expect from big names like Nokia and Samsung. However, Win Mo has numerous benefits and there are very few Windows Mobile phones in the sub-10k price range. This alone makes Micromax W900 a handset to seriously consider.

Samsung has launched the S5620 handset aka Samsung Monte in India for an affordable price of Rs 8,850. The 3G touchscreen phone which is powered by the Touch Wiz 2.0 OS by Samsung also has a 3.2MP camera and support for up-to 16GB microUSB card.

Samsung Monte S5620

Samsung S5620 Monte also comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, giving users the ability to access several social networking sites including and through their internet connection.

Samsung Monte has a 3.0 inch wide-screen WQVGA display which will makes watching videos on the go a delight. The phone also comes with support for GPS. The best part about the phone though is it’s pricing which is pretty affordable in the Indian market.

A phone from Samsung selling for only Rs 8.850 definitely takes the cake and eats it too, to top it the phone is full of features which an everyday user would love to have. The only problem with the phone though is that the initial memory is only 200 MB so users would have to spend a few extra bucks to store videos and songs, but considering that phone memory is pretty cheap these days users won’t have to spend a lot more to add that.

Followed by Airtel, BSNL Doubles Broadband Speed of all Customers under Unlimited Plan

Recently Airtel announced that it will double the internet browsing speed for all its customers free of cost (i.e. if you have 256 kbps connection, it will automatically be converted to 512 kbps plan) and it seems like BSNL has followed Airtel’s strategy and has rolled a similar plan wherein broadband speed of all BSNL customers with any unlimited plan will be doubled without any extra charges.

BSNL Speedtest Results

As a proof, you can check out the speed test results of my 256 kbps unlimited plan on the image above. My home unlimited 256 kbps plan has automatically been upgraded to 512 kbps plan. Though, as per BSNL, this is just a promotional offer and will last until 26th April but, personally I am quite sure that this offer will be extended for an indefinite period considering the falling broadband tariffs of competing ISPs.

Besides this, BSNL also has several freebies for new dataone broadband customers such as waiver of activation charges, unlimited free data usage for first 15 days at a speed of 2 Mbps, etc.
