iDuple: Another Indian Internet Tablet – 5 Sec. Boot Time, 50GB Cloud Storage

We have already told you about a lot of Internet tablets from India. Here is iDuple for you – yet another Indian tablet PC but this one is with a difference! This tablet from iDuple basically has one app – just a web browser. It does not have a hard drive and the tablet boots in just 5 seconds.

So does the lack of a hard drive mean you can’t install apps, store files, and perform other activities that you do on a PC? No, because the iDuple tablet is designed in such a away that when you turn it on, the tablet remotely connects you to a server that runs a virtual operating system. This mean you will be requiring an always-on internet connection just for turning on the tablet.

Actually the OS, your storage and your apps – everything is in the cloud. This way the tablet won’t require a lot of storage or a fast processor to handle resource-intensive applications as they’re   run by a remote server. This is a valid reason for the price of the tablet to be on the lower side. However you do need a pretty good internet connection for using the tablet. Users also get 50GB of cloud-based storage space for their files. You can take a look of the virtual OS that is being run on the tablet, here: iduple.com/webtop.

Try Google Music now: http://www.google.co.in/music

The songs available are all full versions via free streaming. But here is no option to purchase a song as of yet which is a bit weird. But we expect an option to purchase to be available soon. Another much needed feature would be a Playlist which currently does not exist. A couple of months back, the executives of Guruji Search were arrested for launching a similar Music product.

New iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle Lands in India, No Sign of iPhone 4 Yet

Of late, you might have seen several news and blogs saying that would be coming to India soon. However, let me break the news to you. Apple 4 might take a few more weeks or months to land on Indian shores. How do I know it is beyond what this post is about.

Apple Store India

If you might ask why, I will just elaborate by saying that they don’t have a lucrative business in India to start selling their devices. With a high price range of about INR 35,000 to INR 40,000, the device is out of bounds for several users. Even when iPhone first launched in India, there were hardly 1000-4000 buyers, that in itself is deterrent to the company. Most of the iPhone and iPod Touch users in India have bought their devices through the grey channel and from out of the country.

If Apple does sell 1,00,000 units in India, their margin would be somewhere around 10%. Considering the import duty and other marketing costs, the profit is minimal. If you take all of this into consideration, Apple would not even consider bringing the iPhone 4 into Indian markets altogether, but they will in course of time.

If you do want to get your hands on an Apple device, the new , iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle are available at the Apple India Store now at Apple.co.in/store, go ahead and book yours, but don’t expect to see an iPhone 4 at your door for the next few months at least.

India to Develop Its Own Futuristic OS

The Indian Government, according to a report by ET, is planning to develop its own computer operating system. The IT infrastructure in India has been targeted a lot by hackers and cyber criminals in the past.

The DRDO (Defence and Research Development Organization) has partnered with software companies in Bangalore and academic institutions to set up two software development centers, in Bangalore and Delhi.

The new operating system will be built from scratch indigenously, and after the development is complete, it will probably be deployed in major government offices.

“There are many gaps in our software areas; particularly we don’t have our own operating system. So, in today’s world where you have tremendous requirements of security on whatever you do… economy, banking and defence… it’s essential that you need to have an operating system.

We have to protect it (our data), (and) the only way to protect it is to have a home-grown system, the complete architecture… source code is with you and then nobody knows what’s that.” said Dr. V. K. Saraswat, Director General of DRDO and Secretary, Defence R & D.

I do hope that atleast this works out properly; though given the past track record of the Indian Government (read: the Chinese “Indian” tablet and the $10 laptop that turned out to be a USB drive), it’s likely that it won’t.
