HTC Legend Android 2.2 Update Rolling Out Now

HTC_LegendQuite a few weeks ago, we had reported that HTC will soon be rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Legend. Surprisingly, the company first rolled out the Android 2.2 update for the Vodafone UK branded Legend handsets.

However, starting from today the company has started rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the unlocked Legend handsets in Europe. Hopefully, HTC will start rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the device in other regions of the world pretty soon as world.

Legend owners who have a carrier branded device need to wait for some more time before they can get their share of Froyo love. The Android 2.2 update for the Legend will bring with it performance improvements and some new features like Mobile AP etcetera.

HTC also commented on their Facebook page that the Wildfire Android 2.2 update is coming soon’.

HTC Legend Android 2.2 Update Rolling Out In The U.K

It was exactly ten days ago that HTC announced that the Legend will get its Android 2.2 (Froyo) update in the coming weeks.’   Now, in less than a couple of weeks since the announcement, Vodafone UK has started rolling out Android 2.2 update for the Legend. Vodafone branded Legend handsets in France and Germany are also reportedly getting their Android 2.2 update love.

HTC_Legend

It’s quite surprising that Vodafone decided to release the Android 2.2 update for the branded Legend first instead of the un-branded ones. The update weighs in at 82.88MB so users are recommended to use Wi-Fi to download the update. Early upgraders suggest that the phone now feels smoother and the irritating SMS bug has been fixed as well.

Hopefully, HTC will release the Android 2.2 update for the unbranded Legends soon as well!

HTC Legend To Get Android 2.2 Update In The ‘Coming Weeks’

When Android 2.2 was released by Google, HTC had promised that most of their phones launched in 2010 will be getting the update. However, after that only the Desire Android 2.2 update was the most talked about. Now since the Desire Android 2.2 update has already been rolled out or is being rolled out in certain regions, the company has moved on to the small brother of the Desire the Legend.

HTC_Legend

HTC has confirmed via their Facebook account that they will be rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the Legend in the coming weeks’. Owners of unbranded/unlocked Legend will be among the first one to get the update with operator locked owners getting the update once it has been approved by their carrier.

It’s nice to see HTC offering Android 2.2 update for the Legend. Being a Legend owner myself, I had almost given up hope of the phone getting the Froyo update.

HTC ‘Phantom Black’ Legend And ‘Brilliant White’ Desire Announced

HTC has launched a black version of the Legend in Europe. The HTC Legend is made up of a single block of an aluminum and looks stellar. In fact, I personally feel that the Legend is one of the best looking Android handset out there in the market. The handset has a 3.2-inch screen with a resolution of 320×480.

The Legend is powered by a 600Mhz Qualcomm processor and sports 384MB of RAM. The back of the phone features a 5MP camera with Flash. From the pictures, the black version looks stellar as well to me. Along with the ‘Phantom Black’ Legend, HTC also announced a new color scheme for the Desire – ‘Brilliant White’. The HTC Desire sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED or S-LCD screen. The phone is powered by a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor and packs in 576MB of RAM. The Desire also has a 5MP camera with a LED flash.

Both the phones will hit the retail stores in Europe by the end of this month. The HTC Desire has already got its Android 2.2 update but the Legend has not. It is still running on Android 2.1 and HTC has not even mentioned a time frame within which the handset will get the Froyo update.

Security Researchers Reveal Android Vulnerability That Allows Hackers to Read Your Email and SMS

AndroidJust days after a wallpaper app was called out for harvesting private data, security researchers have revealed another potential pitfall in Google’s popular mobile operating system. At Defcon hackers conference, Las Vegas, researchers from Spider Labs distributed a rootkit that exploits a bug present in the Android operating system.

“It wasn’t difficult to build,” said Nicholas Percoco, head of Spider Labs, who worked with his partner to develop the malware in just two weeks. The rootkit in question is able to silently gain full system access and can collect and transmit sensitive user information like e-mail and text messages. Spider Labs hopes that the public disclosure will prompt manufacturers to fix the bug present in current Android systems.

Percoco used HTC Legend and Desire handsets for the demonstration; however, he believes that other Android phones are also vulnerable. While Android’s openness is one of its biggest strengths, it can also turn out to be its biggest weakness. The open Market definitely makes it an easier target than the iPhone.

HTC Legend, Desire and Wildfire Finally Getting the Android 2.2 Froyo Update

HTC raised a lot of clamor over its Android 2.2 update for phones released in 2010. There were too many controversial official statements to consider. In one statement, HTC remarked that all phones released in 2010 would get the Froyo update whereas, in another, it went on to mention names of specific models and left out some.

android-2-2-froyo-htc-legend

This easily made us assume that the Froyo update was would not be available for these models. This included the first HTC phone to get Android 2.1, the HTC Legend.

The news has come on the event of rollout of the Android 2.2 update. The first phone to get this update is obviously the Google Nexus One. The updates for Legend, Desire and Wildfire will all roll out in the third quarter of this year. A thread on the XDA developers’ forum talked of a 2.2 update for HTC Legend a few days ago but it was  discarded as a rumor.

New features will include a brand new virtual machine promising speed improvements, better battery life and an improved web browser. The latest Flash player 10.1 and Adobe Air will also be available to Froyo devices and apps will run 2 to 5 times faster.

The last time I requested an update from HTC on this matter, I received this mail from HTC.

We would inform that we working closely with Google and our partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid sense experience on FROYO. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but cannot be more specific yet. We look forward for your kind co-operation.

This comes as good news to all HTC phone owners and assures us that all phones from 2010 will get the Froyo update. However, I did not understand why HTC is being so secretive about these updates and not willing to comment on specific models.

Now that the news is confirmed, you can safely select a phone of your choice  from this list.

Top 10 Android Phones In The Market Right Now

is the next big thingin the mobile operating system field. The Android OS has been successfully able to compete with the Apple iPhone OS/. At present, the Android operating system share might not be much but the pace at which it has been gaining market share is something which surely has been troubling Apple. Currently around 160,000 Android handsets per day are being activated all over the world.

android

The Android Application market is also the second largest in terms of volume, only behind the Apple App Store. The Android App Store has more than 55,000 applications, and currently more than 8000 applications are being submitted to the Android app market every month.

I am sure the above facts would have made you check out some of the Android phones out there. Well here are the Top 10 Android Phones in my opinion :

#10 HTC Legend: The HTC Legend is the successor to the highly popular HTC Hero. The HTC Hero was one of the highest selling and the most popular Android handset ever produced and had also won the Best Mobile Handset award at the Mobile World Congress 2010. The HTC Legend features a 3.2-inch HTC Legend capacitive touchscreen having HVGA resolution. The processor of the Legend is clocked at 600 MHz .The phone packs in 384MB of RAM, and 512MB of ROM. Along with this, the 5MP camera and the aluminum body of the Legend acts as an icing on the cake. The Legend also runs on the popular HTC Sense UI, which is the slickest UI I have ever seen on a mobile handset. Readers can purchase the HTC Legend from here.

#9 Motorola Droid/Milestone: The Motorola Droid was launched in late 2009, but it is still an awesome handset. The testimony to this is that the Motorola Droid is still selling like hot cakes. The Droid features a 3.7-inch TFT screen with WVGA resolution. The phone is powered by a 600 MHz ARM-A8 Cortex, and has 256MB of RAM. The main selling point of the Droid is that it is one of the few Android handsets out there in the market that has a full-QWERTY keyboard. The Motorola Droid won the TIME Magazine Gadget of the Year Award 2009 as well. Interested users can purchase the Motorola Droid from here.

#8 Sony Ericsson Xperia X10: The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 features a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and packs in 384MB of RAM. The phone has a huge 4-inch TFTSony Ericsson Xperia X10 display, featuring a resolution of 852*480. The X10 is mainly a multimedia device. The phone has an 8MP camera, with a LED flash. The 8MP camera at the back is capable of taking decent snaps as well. The phone also features Sony Ericsson’s proprietary TimeScape and MediaScape UI. The only downside of the phone is that it still runs on the older Android 1.6 OS. However, Sony Ericsson has promised that the X10 will get the Android 2.1 update by Q3 of this year. Here is the link to purchase Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

#7 Google Nexus One: Google has not made the Nexus One. The phone has been manufactured by HTC, but is rebadged and sold as the Nexus One. Google launched the phone at the beginning of the year, in an attempt to promote the Android OS. The phone features the usual 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and 512MB of RAM. The phone has a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, which is great indoors but is a major pain outdoors. The Google Nexus One was the first phone to be running on the Android 2.1 OS. It is also the first phone to get the Android 2.2 a.k.aGoogle Nexus One Froyo update. Interested readers can purchase the Google Nexus One From Amazon by click this link.

#6 HTC Desire/HTC Incredbile: The HTC Desire is similar to the Google Nexus One. In fact, we can say that the Desire and the Nexus One are the same phone. The only difference between the HTC Desire and the Nexus One is that the Desire has 64MB more RAM than the Nexus One, and lacks the second mica for noise cancellation. The Desire also has an optical trackpad, instead of the trackball on the Nexus One. Being an HTC branded phone, the Desire features the highly popular Sense UI as well. Here is the link to purchase HTC Desire from Amazon.

People who live in the U.S, should go for the HTC Incredible instead of the HTC Desire.

#5 Motorola Milestone XT720: If the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 does not suffice your camera needs, the Milestone XT720 surely will. The phone features a 720MHz OMAP processor, and packs in 512MB of RAM. The device has an 8MP cam, along with Xenon flash. Yes, you read that right! The Milestone XT720 is the first ever-Android phone to feature a Xenon flash. The phone is also able to record 720p HD videos. The phone has a 3.7-inch TFT screen, and features multi-touch keyboard as well.

#4 Motorola Droid 2: The only phone in this list, which is yet to be officially announced. The only information available about the Droid 2 until now is through leaks. The phone in all probability will pack in a 1 GHz OMAP processor, and 512MB of RAM. The Droid 2 will be the successor to the original Droid. From the leaked pictures, we can say that the Droid 2 resembles the original Droid closely. Motorola has just tweaked the design, and have thankfully replaced the golden d-pad found on the original Droid keyboard, with four arrow keys. Motorola will officially announce the phone sometime within the upcoming couple of months.

#3 HTC EVO 4G: The HTC EVO 4G is a U.S only phone. The device is the first ever-mobile handset to sport 4G connectivity. Along with 4G, the device has a mammoth 4.3-inch TFT display, and the usual 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. As of now, the device is available in the U.S on the Sprint network. Since it is a HTC branded phone, the device also features theMotorola Droid X slick and smooth HTC Sense UI. The phone has a decent 8MP camera at its back as well.

#2 Samsung Galaxy S: The Samsung Galaxy S is definitely one of the best Android phones out there in the market. The phone has a 4-inch Super-AMOLED screen. The Super-AMOLED screen on this device has a better sunlight legibility than the AMOLED screen found on other devices. In fact, the Super-AMOLED screen is considered a worthy rival of the iPhone 4G’s Retina Display. The device also has a 1Ghz Hummingbird CPU that is better than the 1Ghz Snapdragons CPU found in most phones. The only downside of the phone is that the camera lacks an LED flash, and the plastic-y build quality of the device.

#1 Motorola Droid X: The Droid X was officially announced by Motorola just a couple of days ago. The Droid X is the king of all Android phones. Hardware wise the phone has a 1 GHz OMAP processor that is build on the 45nm fabrication process. The phone also has a 4.3-inch TFT screen, an 8MP camera with 720p video recording capability. Multi-touch keyboard or Swype, DLNA and a mini-HDMI port are present as well. The phone is currently only available in the U.S on the Verizon network.

Q. Why did not the HTC Incredible made it to the list?

A.  The phone has a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and an 8MP camera. The phone is available in the U.S only under the Verizon network. The reason the phone did not made it to the list because it is available only in the U.S. This severely limits the market reach of the phone. The HTC Desire can be said a worthy equivalent of the Incredible in the European, and Asian markets. Therefore, I have included the Desire in this list, instead of the Incredible.

So which Android phone are you going to purchase? Do you have any other suggestions that you would want to add to this list? Feel free to tell me about them through your comments.
