Changing Camera Sound in N900

Changing the camera’s sound in N900 is quite easy. All system sounds are stored in usr/share/sound. Just follow the following simple steps to do so:

  • Root your N900 if you have not already. Just download rootsh from application manager.
  • Connect to N900 using any FTP client (like Filezilla or WinSCP) over WiFi.
  • Go to usr/share/sound
  • Replace camera_snd_title_1 by any new sound file (the format doesn’t matter). It’s the camera’s shutter sound
  • Replace camera_snd_title_2. It’s the video recording sound
  • Replace camera_snd_title_3. It’s the camera’s focus sound
  • Disconnect and restart your phone

That’s it. This will change your phone’s camera sounds to the new sound files. If you want a silent camera, just rename or delete the files instead of adding new ones.

DYK Thursday: Some More Awesome Google Search Tricks

In the last DYK, I had talked about some hoax pages that Google had created on April Fool’s Day. This time too, it’s about Google but I have brought some more interesting stuff that you would surely like.

Today, I am gonna tell you some easter eggs in Google Search. Check out!

  1. Nice trick: Go to Google.com. Search for “ascii art”. You will see that the Google logo has turned into a ascii code.
  2. The loneliest number: Searching for “the loneliest number” on Google will give you the result in calculator as 1!
  3. Wondering what is life? Google answers it!: Searching for “the answer to life, the universe, and everything” on Google will give you the answer from the calculator as 42! This was related to a film called “The Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy” in which they find out some answer through complicated calculations. Sorry, i don’t much as I haven’t seen the movie.
  4. Hmmm, I can see that!: Searching for “the number of horns on a unicorn” on Google will give you the answer as 1. [The actual reason behind this is that Google sometimes considers these words as strings. You can verify this y multiplying those words with another number. This applies for the above example too]
  5. Oh, is it?: Searching for “once in a blue moon” on Google search will give you the result as “1.16699016 × 10-8 hertz” in the calculator.

That looks like a small list, isn’t it? That’s all I could get for the “search tricks” this time. Will update it as and when I come to know about new ones.

To make this post a little longer, and entertain you for some more time, I have added some cool easter eggs here.

Can My iPhone Be Jailbroken and Unlocked? F0recast Will Tell You

As a newbie to , many users are excited about going out on an adventure to jailbreak and unlock the device. Why? Well, do I need to answer that? But that aside, can an iPhone be unlocked or jailbroken into?

This question cannot be answered by just looking at the iPhone or knowing the firmware OS version. So what do you do then? Nothing much, use F0recast and it will tell you whether or not your iPhone or iPod Touch can be jailbroken and unlocked or not.

f0recast Finds if iPhone Can be Jailbroken

F0recast is a new application written by the creators of sn0wbreeze, who are one among the many developers who release jailbreaking and unlocking software for the iPhone, so that users can do away with the restrictions that Apple puts in.

To use f0recast, download the app, connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your PC and run the app. It will show you some information about the device and tell you whether or not it is unlockable and tethered.

Windows 7 Update – Microsoft Will Seek and Destroy Pirated Copies

Today on the Genuine Windows Blog, it was announced that Windows 7 will get an update to it’s “Windows Activation Technologies” (WAT). So what is WAT? This feature set was developed to detect if a copy of Windows 7 is “genuine“,  properly activated and has a valid license. In plain English, they want to find out if you have a pirated or cracked copy of Windows 7.

Windows 7 TipsThe new WAT update will detect over 70 “known and potentially dangerous activation exploits“. It may be true that many PCs that have been activated using a crack or hack are infected or at risk of infection. However, Microsoft is plainly stating that this update is mainly for the protection of the users. I have a feeling that there are lots of users who don’t want this protection.

According to the post, this Windows 7 update is “voluntary” and it doesn’t have to be installed. I have to take this statement as the truth, however, I’ve seen plenty of times when I had no choice but to accept updates. Have you ever shut down your PC and then discovered that it’s gone into an automatic update before it shuts down? Who has a choice when this happens?

I’m keeping my hopes up, but I would guess that we are going to see lots of problems stemming from this new update. In the past, any time a change has been made to Windows activations, even legitimate copies of Windows suddenly stop working, or start displaying warnings.

Be sure to post a comment below if you see the new update or experience a problem because of it.

Tweak XP Security Settings with XP-Antispy

A few hours ago, Pallab told us how to Optimize Windows 7 Services with SMART. That made me wonder if there was a similar utility for XP. However, I found out that the SMART utility mentioned in Pallab’s article now supports Vista and XP. After a bit more research, I found a utility I’ve heard about for a long time and hadn’t tried until now.

XP-Antispy is a small application that lets you control some of the XP system services and registry settings. Disabling these services and settings can make your PC safer from outside threats and also keep it from contacting Microsoft when it doesn’t need to. These settings could be changed manually by a Windows user, however, tracking all of them down and changing them could take hours and hours of hard work. XP-Antispy makes it simple.

Here’s what XP-Antispy looks like:

xp-antispy-interface

As you can see, the interface is simple enough, and the operation is as simple as adding check-marks or removing them. Each setting is briefly explained so that you have an idea what each does. Antispy also allows you to keep a copy of your old settings so that you can always return to them if you need to.

There is a built in help file that is fairly detailed if you need it. I was also pleased to find that a portable version (in a zip file) is available for download as well as the typical installer based version.

Important Note: This program is not recommended for a new or casual Windows user. Many of these settings should only be changed by experienced users. As an additional precaution, you could also make a full back up the XP registry with ERUNT before making changes with this tool.

Alternate download at Download.com

Techie Buzz Verdict:

I like XP-Antispy’s simplicity and the help file that is provided. I’m also happy that the author updates this program quite often to keep it current with today’s changing security needs. However, I wish that there was more explanation for each setting. I was also disappointed by a re-directed to eBay on my first attempt to download the zip file. That’s why I included the alternate download location above.

Blacksn0w, Ultrasn0w and Sn0wbreeze Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS with OS 3.1.3

Just a few days after Apple released an updated OS 3.1.3, the jailbreaking software followed suit by releasing updates that would allow users to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone. Earlier released redsn0w was not able to jailbreak iPhone 3G and 3GS, however, updated versions of blacksn0w, ultrasn0w and sn0wbreeze do.

UnlockiPhone1[1]

There is some good news for iPhone 3G and 3GS users as they will now be able to Jailbreak and unlock their phones using either blacksn0w, ultrasn0w and sn0wbreeze. Users can now unlock their iPhone 3G or 3GS with ultrasn0w for 04.26.08 baseband or blacksn0w for 05.11.07 baseband.

The crowd favorite unlocking and jailbreaking software blackra1n, which is written by George Hotz is not yet able to jailbreak or unlock iPhone using the new iPhone OS 3.1.3, so if you are a blackra1n user, you will have to wait for a few more days before you can see an update.

For instructions on jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone 3G and 3GS visit Redmond Pie, who have complete step by step instructions on executing the jailbreak and unlocking using blacksn0w, ultrasn0w and sn0wbreeze.

Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 on iPhone and iPod Touch with redsn0w 0.9.4

Apple released a new update OS 3.1.3 with minor fixes, however, users who have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch will lose all their changes it they update to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

redsn0w 0.9.4 Jailbreaks iPhone OS 3.1.3

Hot on the heels of the new update, a jailbreaking software called redsn0w was updated to support iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod Touch. The redsn0w team released a new update, version 0.9.4 to support jailbreaking and unlocking for iPhone OS 3.1.3.

However, unlocking is currently available for only iPhone 2G users, so it is advisable to iPhone 3G and 3GS users to stay away from the update for sometime, or else they will be carrier locked till an unlock jailbreak is available.

To jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 on an iPhone or iPod Touch, update iTunes to the latest version and update the firmware to OS 3.1.3. After that you can download redsn0w and follow the instructions listed out by Redmond Pie. redsn0w 0.9.4 is available as a download for both Windows and Mac OS X.

GeoHotz Publishes PS3 Hack/Exploit

A few days after George came out with the fact that he had hacked into the read/write memory of the PS3, he has decided to release exploit and let it run wild, most likely because he hit a dead end. This was the same guy who triggered a flurry of jailbreaking software.

In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.

Well, while many might actually say that it was not right for him to release the exploit, it also gives Sony a chance to look at the exploit and patch their system. After all, they have kept it secure for over 3 years, and this will be a challenge to patch and keep it safer for the next few years too.

To download the exploit and learn more about it (too technical for non-geeks) visit this blog post by George.
