Google Nexus S Running MeeGo OS

Steve Straughton the guy who got MeeGo v1.1 up and running on a HTC HD2 has come up with another awesome hack. He has managed to get the Nokia’s highly anticipated MeeGo OS running on the Google Nexus S. For getting the MeeGo OS to run on their Nexus S, users need to flash a custom kernel.

After that, they need to use the fastboot feature to boot the MeeGo OS on their handset using a rootfs image file. Users can also dual-boot between MeeGo and Gingerbread, if they wish to do so.

Nexus_S_MeeGo

Now the million dollar question which is usually associated with these hacks What works and what does not? Except for adb root access and the UI apps, nothing works – Touchscreen, Wi-Fi, data, calls, GPS – nothing. In fact, the SAMOLED screen brightness control option also does not work, which means users will have a tough time to see what’s being displayed on screen.

Nexus S owners who are interested in running MeeGo OS on their handset can find the installation steps here.

Google Nexus S Overclocked To 1.2 GHz

Many people had hoped that the Nexus S will be equipped with a dual-core processor but sadly that did not turn out to be true.   The Nexus S uses a 1 GHz SoC (Silicon-on-Chip) Hummingbird processor. The same processor is used across the different variants of the Galaxy S line-up. Now, an XDA member morfic has released a new kernel Trinity – for the Nexus S which overclocks the processor to 1.2GHz.

The developer of the kernel has also tweaked the voltages for a better battery life. However, this kernel is still a work in progress as the Bluetooth still does not work. The kernel is compatible only with Bionix NS1 custom ROM for the Nexus S.

The 1GHz processor inside the Nexus S is no slow-couch. However, I hope this kernel will satisfy the thirst of speed for all those people who were disappointed with the Hummingbird processor.

Google Nexus S Gets Its First OTA Update – GRH78

Just after a week of its launch, the Google Nexus S is getting its first software update over the air. The OTA (Over-The-Air) update weighs in at 1.9MB and carries the build number GRH78, up from the previous GRH55 build number. There is no official change-log but looking at the size of the OTA, don’t expect wonders. Apparently, the update mainly fixes some bugs and Maps fixes’.

MoDaCo owner Paul posted on XDA with regard to the OTA update :

Super quick GRH78 analysis – changes to framework.jar, kernel and Maps.apk. That’s about it.

Nexus S owners can either wait for the update to be pushed to their phone or enter *#*#checkin#*#* manually and get the update.

How To Root The Google Nexus S

The Samsung-manufactured-Google-branded Nexus S has hit the retail stores of Best Buy across the United States and many people have already managed to get their hands on the device. Now, the crazy folks over at XDA have already started tinkering around with their Nexus S and have managed to gain root access to the handset.Google_Nexus_S

The steps to root your Nexus S handset are pretty simple. Users need to follow the steps listed below to root their device -:

1) Switch off your Nexus S. Then press the Volume up button and the Power button together. Your handset should now boot in the standard recovery mode.

2) I hope you guys know your way around ADB and Android 2.3 SDK. Extract the Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and go to that folder via Command Prompt. Then after starting the adb daemon, user need to enter fastboot devicesto make sure that their handset is properly recognized by adb. After this users need to enter adb reboot bootloader.

3) Once adb reboots your handsets bootloader, users need to enter fastboot oem unlockand press enter. Bingo! Your Nexus S is now rooted!

However, after unlocking the bootloader, the Nexus S will factory reset itself once.

Yes, you have successfully managed to root your Nexus S in three simple steps. Hopefully, a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Recovery for the Nexus S will soon be out to replace the stock recovery.
