Google Desktop, our recommended way of indexing and finding content on your personal computer, has just announced that they will be supporting 64bit OS starting today.

This is good news for people who have a 64bit PC but have not been able to take advantage of this really awesome tool that allows you to search every nook and corner, emails, chats and more just like you have been searching with Google.

Over time Google Desktop has improved and is much more faster than when it started out, so if you have shunned it before give it a try once more.

It has been long since we have been told you about several Google Reader desktop clients, however the search for a really good one was still left unfinished. That though was only until we came across the Google Reader Gadget for Google Desktop which was today officially announced on the Google Reader blog.

The Google Reader gadget for desktops is really a nice alternative for reading feeds on your desktop, it’s lightweight and offers much of what online Google Reader had to offer.

You can browse folders and individual feeds quickly and easily, clicking on a post will popup a new window where you can read the full content.

You can easily share the content, add notes to it, email it and edit tags associated with the feeds. You can also search for content using the Google reader gadget, definitely a worthwhile gadget to have for reading Google Reader content from your desktops.

This project was created using the 20% time that Google allows its developers to spend working on their own pet projects.

Quite sometime back Google had released a useful Gmail Gadget for the Desktop, using which users could keep a eye on their email from the comfort of their desktop, turns out Google didn’t stop there and they have now introduced a new gadget for Google Calendar users.

The Google Calendar Gadget for Desktops will help you keep track of your appointments from your desktop, new improvements to the gadget include a cleaner interface, support for Google Apps calendar and three different viewing modes.

Clicking on the event will show you details which include a map of the location, list of attendees and start and end times. The Google Calendar gadget also allows you to quickly add events, without leaving your desktop.

Google Calendar Desktop gadget requires you to have Google Desktop 5 or above. You can download it here. You will have to remove the old Google Calendar gadget before you can install this one.

I have always been a big fan of Google Desktop for quite some time and use it as my primary search tool for the desktop, the good thing about Google Desktop is that I can also use several useful Gadgets that allow me to monitor websites from the desktop, maintain a to-do list, track Google AdSense earnings from the desktop and more.

Google Desktop also featured a handy gadget that would allow you to view the incoming emails in Microsoft Outlook and your Gmail account, however the gadget was pretty basic and you could not search emails or do other tasks with it.

The Gmail Gadget for Google Desktop allows users to browse email, compose emails and search for them without having to leave the desktop, definitely pretty useful for heavy Gmail users like me.

Indian Railways are usually fully booked and many people buy tickets in waiting lists so that they can get a confirmed seat, if any other person cancel the tickets.

While booking tickets users are given a unique PNR (Passenger Name Record) that they can use to track the status of their bookings.

Most of the times people visit online websites to check on their PNR status, but if you are a Google Desktop user, you can easily check the PNR status in your sidebar with the PNRStatus Google gadget.

This gadget provides easy way to track the status of Indian Railways ticket using PNR Number. You can add up-to 40 PNRs to the gadget. All PNRs will automatically be refreshed once in 6 hours.  You can use the refresh all button to refresh all PNRs manually once in 30 minutes.

The PNR status cannot be refreshed for a single PNR, if the passenger chart has already been created, or the ticket has been cancelled by the user.

For the past few days Google has been releasing quite a few updates for their products, first it was the change of Google Personalized to iGoogle, the new feature addition to Google Reader and then the Google Adsense login page redesign.

Google Desktop Blog today announced another update to the Google Desktop Gadget Designer along with releasing the new Google Desktop Software Development Kit (SDK). They have added in new features such as drag and drop elements, property editiors for elements and a built-in script editor to edit scripts.

Google Destop Gadget Designer now has features such as find and replace and going to specific line numbers which are a must have features in editors, along with project features and more preferences for the editor.

They have also provided with samples to help get started on developing a Gadget.

For those who are now yet aware of Gadgets, these are more like widgets which can be used as a part of the Google Desktop. These allow you retrieve information from various places at once.

Google Desktop Blog today announced that Google Desktop 4 has been taken out of beta and a public version is available for downloads. Google Desktop 4 is now also avialable in 27 other regional languages.

The most significant change from the Beta 3 to Beta 4 was introduction of Google Gadgets instead of Desktop Panels.

Taking the same significant leap forward Google Desktop team has announced a new Google Desktop Gadget Designer tool for developers using which they can create, maintain, and debug their gadgets faster.

Using the Gadget designer developers can now easily manage your projects and files, visually design your gadget UI (no need to handcode the xml), edit your script code and preview changes instantly (no more restarts), view debug messages with the built-in debug console, automatically generate the gadget package and manifest and much more in an integrated development environment.

The Google Desktop Gadget Designer is avialable as a part of the Google Desktop SDK .

What's more fun is that they also have a Desktop Gadget Desigining contest where the total cash prize is $8000. The contest is open only for next month.

Well I know that there is a flood of desktop search from Google, MSN and Yahoo, but I have been using Google Desktop for quite some time, and love it as it eases much of things for me, allowing me to perform several tasks without leaving the desktop.

I would like to list out few things, why I love the google desktop specially the sidebar with all the gadgets I use.

1. I can search for any thing on my harddrive without having to run the freaking windows search.  

Yes the biggest reason for me to have google desktop, and let me tell you its pretty accurate at the results 95% of the times, i can get what i was searching for and had stored away in some folder that i had created 2 years ago. i love this the most as it has helped me a lot with it.

2. Second is the new feature i liked which is incorporated in google desktop search, where i can just hit the ctrl key twice and search without having to move away from what i am doing currently, well it has google suggest incorporated too and gives me the results i want.

3. email archiving, well thats the best part, i have a lot of email accounts set up in outlook and the gds sidebar allows me to view all my emails right where i am, it also keeps on updating the time since the mail had arrived in my inbox, it also allows me to read the complete email without the images or attachments obviously, but that does help me just view the subject and part of the body and judge how important the mail is, rather than just going through each and every mail that arrives at my inbox.

well thats not just it, it also allows me to set up filters to which mails i don’t want to see in the desktop sidebar, so i can ignore spam out my view all the time.

4. well i have a cool plugin that allows me to view the rss feeds from different sites all in one place, this helps me avoiding visiting all the sites to see what’s updated and just going there when i see something new and intersting has come up. well another thing is that, this cool thing also stores rss links from sites you have visited, so you can just go to options and add feeds from sites you have visited or just add one you would want to view.

so it saves me from the pain of discovering feeds for sites i like and i can just go to options and add the sites i like to the list of feeds.

5. the news sidebar plugin

well yea i like to read news, with the amount of time i spend working on the computer, picking the paper has become a leisure activity for me, so to catch up on the latest news from around the world i use this, well anything i think is interesting i just click on the link and i can read the entire article.

6. scratch pad plugin

well ever been on the computer and had a phone call, someone giving you important information and you can’t find a pen around and all confused as to how to get this imp information to write somewhere.
well yea i have had this stumbling experience quite a lot of time, thats why i love this cool plugin i can just write stuff there and forget about it, it saves things automatically without you have to do it, well in addition to that it also allows you to save all the contents to a file too.

7. what time is it

well do have clients or people whom you work with in us or uk or any other country, wondering what time it is there when they will wake up or how long before you are gonna get some flak from them, well this is one plugin that allows you to check the time from anywhere in the world, its quite useful for me.

8. desktop netstat

well ever wondered where the connections are going from your computer or which application is using which port on your computer, well this is the solution, it now only shows you where you are connected but also shows you which application is doing it and from which port it is doing so from.

well want to know if you have any spywares or adware running without information and connecting to the internet, use this tool and you will have all the info you want.

9. adsense status

well if you run a site and have signed up for google adsense then you know that you always have to signup to your site and check status well you can do this without leaving your desktop too with google desktop.

10. delicious plugin

well this is not the last but this allows you to view all your delicious tagged links right from the desktop and visit any when you want it to.
