Geohot Raps To Sony’s PlayStation 3 Lawsuit

Up until now, Geohot has been known as a very talented hacker who unlocked the iDevices from Apple and hacked the PlayStation 3. However, Sony filed a lawsuit against Geohot at the beginning of this year for jailbreaking the PS3 and also requested for a restraining order (TRO) on the distribution of the jailbreak.

Now, George Hotz a.k.a Geohot has posted an explicit rap on his YouTube account explaining the lawsuit and challenging Sony as well. Readers can watch the video (NSFW lyrics) of the Geohot rap below :

Below are the full lyrics of the rap, for people who were unable to figure out what Geohot said in the above video :

Yo it’s geohot
And for those who don’t know
I’m getting sued by Sony

Let’s take this out of the courtroom and into the streets
I’m a beast, at the least, you’ll face me in the northeast
Get my ire up, light my fire
I’ll go harder then Eminem went at Mariah
Call me a liar
Pound me in the ass with no lube, chafing
You’re f*cking with the dude who got the keys to your safe and
Those that can’t do bring suits
Cry to your Uncle Sam to settle disputes
Thought you’d tackle this with a little more tact
But then again fudgepackers, I don’t know Jack

I shed a tear everytime I think of Lik Sang
But shit man, they’re a corporation
And I’m a personification of freedom for all
You fill dockets, like thats a concept foreign to y’all
While lawyers muddy water and TROs stall
Out of business is jail for me
And you’re suing me civilly

Exhibit this in the courtroom
Go on, do it, I dare you

First the jailbreak for iDevices, then the PS3 jailbreak and now this rap. Geohot sure is a talented guy!

Sony Aims to Send Harsh Message to Security Researchers

The hot topic in the Sony PlayStation community has been the security breach of the PS3 devices by computer security analysts and hackers as was revealed in the Chaos Communication Congress. When hacker George Hotz (of the legalizediPhone jailbreak fame) managed to use root keys to make the PS3 run unauthorized code, there was havoc. Geohotz’s method allows anyone with a PS3 to use his hack to run homebrew games or applications (software that is not authorized by Sony) and pirated games. While Geohotz claims that the purpose of his hack was to enable the running of homebrew software something the PS3’s smaller sibling, the PlayStation Portable, is highly sought-after for the inevitability of piracy landing on the unhackablePS3 is quite obvious.

800px-PS3Versions

Thus, Sony is suing George Hotz, and some other security analysts under certain laws of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The DMCA is supposed to be a champion for the cause of intellectual property rights and royalty rights, and is also the key support on which Digital Rights Management (DRM) stands.

However, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that tries to preserve our rights of speech and privacy in this age of electronic devices and networks, has always warned the general public about the DMCA. Corrynne McSherry and Marcia Hofmann of the EFF write:-

For years, EFF has been warning that the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can be used to chill speech, particularly security research, because legitimate researchers will be afraid to publish their results lest they be accused of circumventing a technological protection measure. We’ve also been concerned that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act could be abused to try to make alleged contract violations into crimes.

The DMCA is also strangely inconsistent. While Geohotz is being tried under this law, earlier he was released by the same law when he allowed the jailbreaking of Apple’s iPhone. Sony also words its complaint harshly stating that Hotz and his defendants breached the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act as well:

by transmitting in interstate and foreign commerce a communication containing a threat to obtain information from a protected computer without authorization, or to impair the confidentiality of information obtained from a protected computer.

How Sony will ever remove the hack from the depths of the internet is something that will keep the tech world interested in the coming days. It would be the nearest that the net will come to seeing a slapstick comedy performed live by a huge technology company.

Limera1n Released; Jailbreaks Your iTouch For Life!

It was just yesterday that we told you about Geohot making a comeback to the iTouch jailbreaking scene with limera1n. Today, Geohot has released his latest jailbreaking tool limera1n. The application will allow users to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad (3.2), iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4G running on iOS 4.0/4.1. limera1n is an untethered jailbreak (thanks to comex) which will jailbreak your iTouch device for life. As of now, the application is available only for Windows with the Mac version coming soon. Limera1n.jpg

The application should technically also support Apple TV. However, due to the release of limera1n the Chronic Dev team had to push back their release of GreenPois0n. As stated earlierlimera1n and GreenPois0n use different boot rom exploits to jailbreak the various iTouch devices from Apple.

The Chronic Dev team did this because they did not want to waste’ the SHAtter’ boot rom exploit and let Apple win the cat and mouse’ game.

Dev Team Is Not Pleased About GeoHot’s Comeback

Oh my God, there is a big big problem in the jailbreaking community and it is not about Apple’s closed system. It is more about what is happening with GeoHot’s announcement that he is going to come back into the jailbreaking scene with his latest offering Limera1n.

GeoHot and Dev Team Problems

Limera1n which is a lifetime jailbreak for all Apple devices from GeoHot exploits a bootrom exploit which the Dev team has been working on, but GeoHot’s announcement to release this to pubic is definitely not going down well with the Dev team.

For a prolog, GeoHot’s decision to quit the jailbreaking scene had similar reactions, from the public though. You might want to read up the comments on this post to learn about it.

So if this going to create a long term issue within the jailbreaking community who help users jailbreak iPhone, jailbreak iPod Touch and jailbreak iPad? Well, the next few days will make things more clearer.

GeoHot Limera1n App Brings Him Back to Jailbreaking

Nearly three months ago, we had reported that Geohot has decided to ditch the iTouch jailbreak scene. Now Geohot is all set to make a comeback to the iTouch jailbreaking scene with his latest tool Limera1n. This new tool from Geohot will be able to jailbreak all the various iTouch devices including the iPhone 4. Limera1n will be released on 10/11/10 i.e. on October 11; exactly a year after blackra1n was released.

Limera1n

However, the Chronic-Dev team is not happy with this move from Geohot. The Chronic Dev team will also be releasing a new jailbreaking tool GreenPois0n. The tool will be able to jailbreak all the iTouch devices running on iOS 4.1 and will be released on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10. Both Limera1n and GreenPois0n will jailbreak all the iTouch devices for life using boot rom exploits. Geohot’s Limera1n will be using a different boot rom exploit than the SHAtter’ exploit being used by Chronic Dev team.

The Chronic Dev team wants Geohot to save his new boot rom exploit for the next generation iPhone and iPad.

Rumor: Geohot To Release ra1n?

It was just over a week ago, we had told you that Geohot will be leaving the iPod Touch/iPhone and iPad jailbreak scene. Geohot even wrote a blog post about this on his blog. He had also deleted his twitter account, and hasApple iPhone 4 made his blog an invite only one. Geohot had however said that he will make any major announcement through his friends Mike Cohen twitter account. Now, today mikecohenn tweeted that:

What’s a good time to make it ra1n?

Many of the reputed blogs online are saying that it might be possible that Geohot will return under a new name. It is also possible that he will release a new tool that will work for all iTouch devices and all the different versions of iOS before leaving the modding community, once and for all.

It is too early to speculate anything, and only time will tell us what Geohot is up to. However, many people are still pinning their hope on Geohot to release a new jailbreak application for the iOS4.

GeoHot Ditching iPhone 4 Jailbreak, iPhone Jailbreak and iPad Jailbreak

It was just a couple of days ago we told you that Geohot had managed to jailbreak his iPhone 4 on the day he got it. Sadly, he was in no mood to make the jailbreak public. Now, Geohot has updated his last blog post to say thatiphone4 he has taken a sort of temporary retirement from the iPhone jailbreak and unlocking scene.

Here is what the updated blog post says :

Sorry, this post was probably a bad idea. Next time I won’t say anything. I miss when this blog was actually about technical things(I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.

The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.
Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake

Quite a strange move from Geohot here. He was the first guy to unlock the original iPhone way back in 2007. Now the hope of all owners depends on Comex and iH8sn0w to release a jailbreak for the new iPhone 4.

Apple iPhone 4 Jailbroken By Geohot

Geohot is one of the most popular guy in the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreak/unlock scene. He has successfully managed to hack the PlayStation 3 as well. However, Geohot has been mum right from the time the Apple iPhoneclip_image001 4 was announced, and released.

Now after quite a few months, Geohot has updated his blog. In the blog post, he says that he managed to jailbreak the iPhone 4 the day it landed on his doorsteps.

Here is what his blog post said:

Got one of these in the mail today and figured I’d give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don’t ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

As it is clear from the blog post, Geohot has clearly said that he won’t be stating a release date. Users can jailbreak iOS4 on iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch using PwnageTool 4.0.

Unlock iOS4 iPhone 3GS Using Blacksn0w RC2

Steve has released the RC2 version of the Blacksn0w unlocks for iOS4. The RC2 version of blacksn0w is just a repackagedversion of the original iOS4 unlock released by geohot. The Blacksn0w RC2 also contains the binariesiPhone 3GS for 5.11.07 baseband for iPhone 3GS. The binary for 5.11.07 baseband was released by msft.guy a few days ago.

Use on Modem Firmware 05.11.07 ONLY!

V1.2: Support for 4.0 GM. Backwards compatible to 3.1.2/3 as well. V1.1: MyWi tethering fix

Geohot’s unlock for 3.1.2/3.1.3/4.0GM on the iPhone 3GS (and probably 3G). Please donate at http://blackra1n.com/ if you enjoy.

With 3.1.3 & 4.0 GM patch (when needed) by msft.guy. Packaged by Pushfix.info

This is an unofficial release but Geohot HAS given me permission to redistribute blacksn0w. All known issues with WiFi loss and boot loops seem to be fixed.   If it doesn’t work for some reason, you should still get the SpringBoard. This allows you to uninstall if necessary. It is a little slower to boot because of the increased safety of the release. A 3GS boots to cell connection established in about 90 seconds in iOS 4 now (50% slower than 3.1.X).

Improvements may be made in the future.

The Blacksn0w RC2 unlock is only for iPhone 3GS on 05.11.07 baseband, with an old bootrom.

Here are the steps to unlock your iPhone 3GS running on iOS4.

Jailbreak iPad: Upcoming Jailbreaks for the iPad

Earlier today, we posted about an upcoming jailbreak for the iPad running OS 3.2. The jailbreak which is known as Spirit and was ported from an iPhone jailbreak is basically a userland jailbreak and does not require any other software to be installed by the user.

jailbreak_ipad

However, there are quite a few jailbreaks for the iPad which will be released in the next few days or weeks, depending on how hard Apple has made it for the devs. The first and most likely jailbreak to hit the stands would no doubt be Spirit, but our hot favorite, George Hotz, is also working on a jailbreak for iPad. The new jailbreak will most likely be a port of the untethered jailbreak for iPhone which he came up with earlier last week.

In addition to that, you can also expect iPad jailbreaks from the iPhone Dev team and Chronic Dev team which had released greenpois0n. Now, jailbreaking an would not be as easy as the iPhone, because there are basically no USB connectors on the iPad and users have to dock the device in order to sync it.

However, considering the past, and how Apple has made it really hard for iPhone devs to create an untethered jailbreak and how developers have overcome all those restrictions, it would only be a matter of time till you see a Cydia store and the ability to install unauthorized app on the iPad.

It would be interesting to see who jumps who on the iPad jailbreaking bandwagon and we will definitely keep an eye on it and update you as we get more information on the iPad jailbreaks.
