Mass Effect 3 Debut Trailer Showcases Reapers Wrecking Havoc on Earth

Pardon me if I appear a bit over-excited, but any RPG fan will probably agree that such excitement is justified, for Bioware has officially announced Mass Effect 3. Have a look at the debut trailer that was unveiled at the Spike TV Video Game Awards.

Yes, Mass Effect 3 will finally allow us to explore Earth. In fact, in the final installment in the trilogy, the fate of Earth and human civilization will rest on Shepherd’s shoulders. The Reapers are coming from beyond the known realms of space, and it’s up to you to unite all civilizations for one final confrontation.

EA didn’t divulge too many details about the game; however, Mass Effect 3 is slated to be released in the fall of 2011.

Bejeweled 3 Coming On December 7, Pre-order Now

One of the most famous games in the PopCap franchise, Bejeweled, will be releasing a brand new version Bejeweled 3 on December 7 for both PC and Mac users.

When I started playing Bejeweled few years ago, I found it really silly, but I quickly got hooked onto it and have never been able to let go. I even went ahead and downloaded Bejeweled 2 for free when they were having a sale (yes, greedy me, but I told you too).

Now that Bejeweled 3 is coming out, I can’t wait. It surely has to have a lot of new things considering that PopCap is also so excited about it. By the way check out a video of Bejeweled 3 and their new Zen mode below, click here if you can’t see it.

You can learn more about Bejeweled 3 at http://www.popcap.com/games/bejeweled3. You can also pre-order Bejeweled 3 for Windows and Mac for $19.99. Pre-Order Bejeweled 3.

Spectral Souls: Massive New RPG for Android Coming Next Month

Android already has quite a few decent role playing games like Zenonia, Dungeon Hunter and Crusade of Destiny. However, all of them fail to capture the depth we have come to associate with RPG games. The good news is that if HyperDevbox lives up to its promise, then we will soon have a truly stunning RPG for Android.

Spectral-Souls-Android-RPG-1

You might already be familiar with HyperDevbox thanks to their other awesome Android game – ExZeus Arcade. They are currently working on Spectral Souls – Resurrection of the Ethereal Empires for Android, which will feature a stunning 52 soundtracks and 84 characters. All of this will amount to more than 1 GB of data and provide in excess of 100 hours of gameplay.

Spectral-Souls-Android-RPG-2

Spectral Souls is an official port of the PSP game by Idea Factory, and is a tactical role playing game. Don’t expect this to be a walk in the park, as HyperDevbox has stated that the game will be deep and challenging. Check out the video embedded below to get an idea about the gameplay. Spectral Souls will be released before the end of the year. It will require a meaty processor (although there will be a low-resolution mode), and run on Android 1.6 and above.

Valve Delays Portal 2 to April

Bad news folks. Portal 2, the sequel to the mind-bendingly awesome Portal, has been delayed to April 18, 2011. This will undoubtedly upset the fans of the original innovative puzzle game that edged out many high-budget blockbusters to win over 30 game of the year awards. But then, this is Valve we are talking about. Did any of you actually expect them to deliver this on time? Heck, the two months delay is a pretty small deal when compared with some of Valve’s previous schedule slippages. Here’s Valve’s tongue-in-cheek press release:

Valve today announced that Portal 2— the sequel to the ground-breaking title that won over 30 game of the year awards, despite missing its original ship date—will now be available the week of April 18th, 2011. This two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve’s proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date.

Valve might not be known for delivering games on time, but they are definitely known for their quality. Let’s hope that Portal 2 will truly live up to Valve’s reputation.

Microsoft Will Relaunch Games for Windows Marketplace in November

When it comes to distributing content through online stores, Microsoft’s track record has been less than impressive, to put things politely. They fumbled with the Windows Marketplace and ultimately shut it down. Games for Windows has been a similar sorry tale. While others like Steam, Direct2Drive and Impulse Valve signed on hundreds of developers, Microsoft restricted itself to just a few dozen titles. Microsoft’s only saving grace has been the Zune Store and the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Games-for-Windows-Marketplace

Now, Microsoft has announced that it will relaunch the Games for Windows Marketplace on November 15. The revamped online store will sport a redesigned interface and feature 100 high quality titles at launch. Customers will be able to purchase games using either credit/debit cards or their Microsoft points (from existing Xbox Live accounts). Purchased titles can be downloaded using the web browser, 3rd party download managers or Microsoft’s download manager. Thankfully, Microsoft has decided against forcing customers to go through cumbersome mechanisms involving the Windows Live desktop client.

With Games for Windows Marketplace, we set out to create a digital store built for PC gamers end-to-end,said Kevin Unangst, senior global director, PC and Mobile Gaming, at Microsoft. And by integrating with our existing Xbox LIVE and Windows Live services, we’ve made it easier than ever for millions of gamers to see for themselves how easy buying PC games can be.

Titles that will be available at launch include Fable: The Lost Chapters, Grand Theft Auto III, Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 2, Flight Simulator, Gears of War and Halo. Microsoft has also promised to launch new titles every week. One of the biggest draws of the Xbox store, ‘Deal of the Week’ that offers high quality titles at a deep discount, will also be available.

Rock Out with Instant Jam – the flash based Guitar Hero clone!

Remember Frets on Fire the open source Guitar Hero clone? Also, remember InstantAction? The embeddable gaming client? Well, put those two together, and you have Instant Jam! The embeddable and totally awesome rhythm game that lets you play to music from your own library.

Yes, you read that right from your own library. That is epicly awesome, thank you InstantJam.

instantjam

So what is so blatantly awesome about it, apart from it being a Guitar Hero clone lookalike that you can play on your own website? (As long as it supports iFrames, of course)

For starts, it marries social networking with half-decent gaming. (At least much better than Farmville or Mafia Wars). Secondly it allows you to use either your keyboard or a standard guitar controller. Also, it’s something like Grooveshark, with loads of songs being added daily for you to play.

Of course, it’s compatiblewith Facebook:-

Play along with your favorite songs from your own music library for free. Fully integrated with Facebook, Instant Jam combines the very best elements of rhythm gaming with social media: challenge friends, show off achievements, share in-game gifts and more.

Oh, you want to play it? Well, why didn’t you tell me? It’s right here!

Steam grows beyond 30 million accounts.

Valve’s digital distribution service Steam has always been at the forefront of video games and digital distribution. Their store stocks the best in AAA games as well as indie surprises with a a discount sale almost every week. In the eight years that it has been operational, Steam has seen phenomenal growth especially in recent times, due partly to the addition of Mac OSX as a platform for many games.

steamlogo

Said Gabe Newell, president of Valve:

Steam is on track to record the biggest year in its six year history. The year has marked major development advances to the platform with the introduction of support for Mac titles, the Steam Wallet and in-game item buying support, and more. We believe the growth in accounts, sales, and player numbers is completely tied to this work and we plan to continue to develop the platform to offer more marketing, sales, and design tools for developers and publishers of games and digital entertainment

To meet the demand of sales, which grew by about 200%, Steam upgraded its infrastructure thoroughly-

Steam sales during the trailing 12 months increased by more than 200%, putting it on track for a sixth straight year of realizing over 100% year-over-year growth in unit sales. To meet this demand, the Steam infrastructure has been increased and now has ability to run at 400Gps, enough bandwidth to ship a digitized version of the Oxford English Dictionary 92.6 times per second.

That is great work, Valve. Kudos!

With Penguspy, Finding Good Linux Games Is Easier Than Ever

greenshot_2010-10-17_01-54-17

While many claim that gaming on Linux is like playing football in mangroves, the gaming scene for Linux has been changing, the past few years, mostly for good. While many popular games are not available for Linux and GNU based systems, many other open source, free or linux-only games have come up.  So if you’re the gamer guy, it makes sense to keep a tab on a few gaming sites catering to linux exclusively, like Penguspu.

Penguspy is like a gallery of linux games. It has a collection of both free and commercial games which can be easily browsed by category, ratings, views or simply alphabetically.

The website covers various genres like action, arcade, strategy, shooters, sports, FPS, RPGs and MMORPGs. Each game has a page where you can find its rating, description, related video or trailer, a link to it’s homepage from where you can download or buy it, a list of similar games and a comments area.

So if you use Linux and would like to try out some new games, go check out Penguspy

Games You Can Play Using Google Chrome Extensions

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. As this famous saying goes, sometimes you have to take a break and give yourself some play time. Now, you could load up that Medal of Honor CD or even start playing Call of Duty, but what if you could just play a quick game while you are browsing the web in ?

Super Mario Google Chrome Game

Yes, I am talking about which allow you to play games from within the browser without even leaving the current website you are browsing. You can play these games while you are waiting for a download or waiting for task to finish in the browser and then continue doing what you do. So without further ado, here is another one of Techie Buzz’s featuring Chrome Extensions which you can use to play Games on the browser.

Please note: Though these extensions do not turn the browser into a gaming device and some times they use popups to open the games. That said, the quick access to games is definitely worth it.

BLOONS, The Game! – Alert, this is a very ADDICTIVE game. I remember playing it once and never stopping. With BLOONS, you play the role of a monkey bursting balloons.   Find that easy? Just play some levels and you will see that it isn’t as easy as it seems. And like I said this game can hook you, so make sure you have the time before starting to play this one. They also have a big selection of Tower defense games. If you are more into Tower Defense Games, check out our list of Top 5 Tower Defense Games.

Mario Game – Who hasn’t heard about Mario. Oh yea those new genre gamers. But this classic will keep you hooked for awhile. If you want to play Super Mario, yes there is an extension for that too. Download it here.

Pacman – Another classic arcade game which will keep you busy for awhile. Control your pacman and eat all the dots before the monsters have you for dinner.

Snake Game – The game that probably started the mobile gaming revolution. The snake game has been there and done that, now you can also play it on Chrome.

Chess Game – Show the computer your better brains by challenging it in a Chess game while you wait for something to download or just don’t have anyone else to play Chess with.

Chrome Mini Golf Game

Mini Golf – Have some time before heading to the golf course? Just load up this game and practice your putts. However, don’t expect it to improve your score card at the course Smile.

Chrome MineSweeper – Another classic games I started playing when I had Windows 98. This game has stayed around for a long time and you can continue playing it in Google Chrome now.

Ping Pong 3D – Play Ping Pong against the computer and see if you can win. This is one of the hardest Flash games I have played and winning is not a joke.

Tetris – Another classic Arcade game which can keep you hooked. Go build.

Copter Game – Keep the copter from hitting obstacles while you make sure to not hit the terrain, the more you fly, the tougher it gets.

Boys Vs Girls Tic-Tac-Toe Game – Aha those classics, this games lets you play Tic-Tac-Toe from right within the browser. The only difference is that it replaces the X and O with a boy and girl doodles. If you want to just play the classic game, download this Tic-Tac-Toe game extension.

Games for bored people – Waiting for a slow webpage to load? Then make the balls bounce with this completely USELESS game that will keep you busy for a while.

Game Button – This extension allows you to play tons of games in a new popup window. Just select your genre, choose your game and start playing.

Free Online Games @ Gadget Runner – This Chrome extension provides you with a set of games that can keep you hooked for a while. The Games include Sim Taxi, Mini Pool, Solitaire and Bowling among others.

Phew, that’s quite a few games and it doesn’t make Jack a dull boy anymore. If you have your own favorite games, do share them with us. I will add them to the list.
