Super Mario 3 Games for Windows – Hours of Fun

marioHow old is Mario? Do you think he’s getting tired of jumping on Goombas?

Goomba2Mario first made an appearance in 1982. Since that makes Mario 28 years old, I think he’s just getting started jumping around. We’ll be seeing him for a long time.

The Wii and Xbox game systems brought back interest in the Super Mario series, but if you want to play some Mario games on your Windows systems, you’ll have no shortage of game choices.

Yesterday, Softendo released a simple version called Mario Play. Here’s a screen shot.

This game can be played in a window or full screen. There are no levels, no power-ups, and nothing else to help Mario. The object is to collect coins while dodging enemies as they continue arriving on screen faster and faster. You’ll be trying to get the highest score possible.

If you want a game more like the old Super Mario 3, try one called Mario Forever 5. It has all kinds of levels and will help you waste hours and hours. Here’s a screen shot.

In case you want to see it in action, here’s a video preview of Mario Forever.

There is one thing that you need to watch for when installing Softendo games. If you don’t want a special search toolbar in your web browser, be sure to uncheck it when you see it offered.

If neither of these is enough to keep you busy, I found over 80 free Mario games at and a few dozen more Mario games at Caiman.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

The free Mario games at Softendo are great. The look and feel of them reminds me of the old Nintendo game systems. If you’d like some retro platform games, you should try these.

Bejeweled 3 Coming On December 7, Pre-order Now

One of the most famous games in the PopCap franchise, Bejeweled, will be releasing a brand new version Bejeweled 3 on December 7 for both PC and Mac users.

When I started playing Bejeweled few years ago, I found it really silly, but I quickly got hooked onto it and have never been able to let go. I even went ahead and downloaded Bejeweled 2 for free when they were having a sale (yes, greedy me, but I told you too).

Now that Bejeweled 3 is coming out, I can’t wait. It surely has to have a lot of new things considering that PopCap is also so excited about it. By the way check out a video of Bejeweled 3 and their new Zen mode below, click here if you can’t see it.

You can learn more about Bejeweled 3 at You can also pre-order Bejeweled 3 for Windows and Mac for $19.99. Pre-Order Bejeweled 3.

Unigine Announces A Linux Game Development Competition

Linux is a great operating system but one area where it severely lags behind others (Windows) is games. There are very few open source game engines available for Linux but most of them are generally miles behind those available for Windows.

The Unigine engine is a powerful game engine and it is cross platform – which means that it van run on Linux too. However, because of licensing costs which can even go upto $100,000, Linux game development has not really taken off  in-spite  of it.

Unigine Corp has, however, been always Linux friendly. Their upcoming game OilRush will be released in a few months with a Linux client as well. They want to kickstart the development of Linux games and they are doing it through a Linux game development competition.

This is what Denis Shergin, CEO of Unigine Corp. said:

I have been using Linux for over than 10 years now and find it a really great platform with a steadily growing market share on desktops. What we see, however, is though this niche market is open to conquer, it severely lacks high-quality 3D games with up-to-date visuals. We are eager to contribute to filling in the gap and boost up Linux game development.

The competition is open to any team which has developed a 3D game or is working on one and is experienced with Linux software development. The winning team will get a free binary license on Unigine engine for a single project on PC platform (Windows / Linux). Unigine Corp. will give another two teams “huge discounts” for the license.

This is all good news for Linux game development. Let us hope we see some awesome games as a result of this.

Google To Add Content Ratings To Android Market

According to a blog post by Tim Bray, on the Android Developers blog, Google is planning to add content ratings to every application on the Android Market.

Starting next week, developers will have to specify a content rating for the applications they submit to the Android Market. All existing applications will have to be updated with the content rating information in a specified time frame, failing which a default rating of Mature will be added to the application.

Developers will be able to choose from four content rating levels – “All, Pre-teen, Teen, & Mature”. This upgrade to the Android Market will coincide with the launch of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Apple has supported content ratings on the iPhone App Store since the launch of iOS 3.0.

For more details about content ratings on Android Market, check out this Android Market help post.

19% of Facebook Gamers are Addicted, and other factoids.

Of course, it’s all PC Gaming, at the end of the day, right guys?

Facebook has an abnormally large amount of users playing games. Games such as Farmville or Mafia Wars. The annoyance factor of all these games on other peoples’ walls ranges from terrible to depressing. However, just how many of those daily Facebook loggers play games?

According to unofficial Facebook fan-site All Facebook, about 50% of Facebook log-ins are specifically for playing games, with over half of Facebook’s users playing these games.

However, out of these 250 million plus users, about 19% say that they are addictedto these games. A very loosely used term, I’m afraid for addiction, as a medical term, is really serious business. It’s exactly the kind of thing that is overused in the media while debasing video games as a whole. However, since it concerns Facebook, I do not mind it all that much.

Nevertheless, the other statistics are most interesting. 56 million people play such games daily which is most of the UK’s population. The average time per month spent playing games is around seven hours! That’s probably a little less than the amount of time I spend playing every week. Considering that Facebook is a social networking site, this is pretty big.

More facts here.
