Moonbase Alpha Goes Online on Steam

NASA has teamed up with the US Army game development studio (the makers of America’s Army) to deliver an almost-realistic lunar base simulation. Moonbase Alpha is a pretty neat looking game that has you (and up to five more players) restoring NASA’s lunar base – Moonbase Alphaafter it was damaged in a critical meteorite impact. Using cutting-edge lunar technology and varied tools and robots, you and your friends must save the colony before the oxygen runs out in the base.

moonbase1

The lesser the time you take, the better your score is and in the near future I would expect a lot of competition to pipe up on this game. The game is well integrated with Steam with stats and leaderboards supported. Also, Valve’s Anti-Cheat (VAC) system is also integrated into this game.

Moonbase2

The best part about this game is that it’s free. Yes, it’s rated E for Everyone and is great for family gaming and is also entirely free!

Play Google Pacman Whenever You Want

pacman_yet_another__paul_01 A few days ago, Google featured a new Doodle on their search page to celebrate the 30 year birthday of Pacman. Unlike other Google Doodles, this one was actually a real game that you could play right on the search page.

Lots of people enjoyed playing the game and lots more people were annoyed at the game sounds that played when the page loaded. Those who enjoyed playing the game might have been disappointed to see that it is now gone from the Google search page.

Earlier today, I saw a post by Shankar Ganesh which told me how I could download a copy of the Google Pacman page. I wasn’t satisfied with a downloaded copy and I decided to look around for the original page and after a few minutes, I found it.

The new permanent home for Google’s Pacman is:

http://www.google.com/pacman/

Now there’s no need to download a copy of it. All you have to do is bookmark the page. You can even set this page as your default search engine if you really enjoy it.

If you still want to download a copy of this game, just go to the link above and use the Save Asmenu in your web browser to save a copy of the page.

Here are three tips for playing the game:

  • It can now be muted by clicking the sound icon on the left corner of the game board.
  • You can play a two player game by clicking the Insert Coinbutton under the search box.
  • You can easily resize the game by holding down a CTRL key and scrolling your mouse wheel.

Many people think that this is the best Google Doodle ever made. What do you think?

Sony Publishes Its 2009-10 Fiscal Year Financial Report; Posts Another Huge Loss

Sony has just released its financial statement for the Fiscal year ending March 31st, 2010, and things don’t look good. The company posted a loss of $439 million, down from the $1 billion loss it faced in the 2008-09 financial year. Sales of the various Sony products were down except for the PS3. Sony managed to sell 13 million PS3s compared to the 10.1 million units in the 2008-09 financial year.

clip_image001

The number of PSPs sold fell from 14.4 million units to 9.9 million units. The Sony PS2 sold 7.2 million units, down by only .5 million units from the previous financial year. Quite surprising for a console whose timeis now over. The sale of games of the various consoles from Sony also fell this year. Sony sold 44.4 million PSP games, down by 5.9 million units. The sale of PS2 games saw a huge decline, going down to 35.7 million units from 2008’s 83.5 million units.

The only good news here for Sony fan boys is that the Sony PS3 has finally become profitable for the company. The profit margin will now continue to increase thanks to the shift to a 40nm Graphics card. Hopefully, the launch of PSP2 and the PlayStation Move at the E3 Expo will turn things around for the company.

Sleep is Death is Cheap as Living – Pay What You Want!

While I bought this game for $9 (and no regrets, thank you), Sleep is Death is worth at least $15. There is a special level of pixelated charm that this storytelling device (as it does not entirely fit into the common definition of video gamein my opinion), and from all accounts this game is awesome. The games stories I played/made on this platform had a whole new level of new-ness attached to them.

image

So when Jason Rohrer, the creator of this game, tells you that you can buy this game for as much as you are willing to pay for it, you know it’ll make your day. Yes! Though you have to pay the minimum price ($1.75) that covers the cost of the bandwidth for download and payment processing, you get two copies of the game (since this game is two-player only). So, if you will take our advice, GO BUY IT!

Pay What You Want for Five Great Indie Games

The Humble Indie Bundle is a is an initiative by Wolfire Games in association with Child’s Play Charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) to sell a one-of-a-kind indie bundle. Adopting the pay what you want payment method, they are sellingfive great indie games with a cumulative price of $80 for as much as you wish to give them. These are all cross-platform games (work great on Windows, Mac or Linux!) and are DRM-free. The catch is that you can decide where the money you pay goes. Either it can be split evenly among the seven participants (the five developers and two organizations), or you can choose to give it all to the developers or all to charity.

IndieBundle

The five games that you get in this bundle are:-

  • World of Goo: 2D Boy’s innovative physics-based puzzle game where you control squishy goo globules to build platforms, bridges and the like. One brilliant game!
  • Aquaria: An underwater platformer where you control Naija a lone undersea dweller in search of her family. Singing magical songs and attacking dangerous sea creatures, this beautiful and arty platformer was well received.
  • Gish: Play a ball of tar. Oh yeah, this game is fresh, but not literally. Play a dynamic ball of tar in a destructable physics environment. Have fun too!
  • Lugaru HD: Anthropomorphic rabbits fighting against corruption? I don’t like furries too much, but it is the predecessor of the upcoming Overgrowth, so I’m in!
  • The Penumbra Series: There is something about horror that draws gamers into it. When a horror game dev decides to make a game completely and utterly atmospheric and tie up immersion as the most important part of the game, it delivers something unimaginably terrifying and brilliant.
