Angry Birds + Rio = Motion Picture Based Casual Game!

We all know and love Rovio’s Angry Birds. Let’s face it it’s addictive, it’s free (for the most part) and the entire concept of birds kamikaze-ing into fat pigs for revengeor defenseis hilarious! Coupled with the Finnish developer’s remarkable amount of market penetration and platform penetration, it’s hard to find smartphone aficionados who have not heard about Angry Birds.

Fox Studios have recognized this exceptional appeal that the mobile game has amongst the general populace and have partnered with Rovio for the publicity of their up and coming motion picture Rio featuring two rare macaws Blu and Jewel on a whirlwind journey through the magical city of Rio. The movie, slated for an April release, will utilize the mobile gaming platform in a delightfully new way.

In partnering with Rovio, we are combining the world’s hottest application developer with one of the motion picture industry’s premier creative forces to introduce the millions of fans of ANGRY BIRDS to the exciting world of RIO,said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for Twentieth Century Fox.

The premise for the video game is that the birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio. The birds eventually escape (by smashing into the bars of their cage, no doubt) and start a quest for saving their macaw friends. As with any Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Rio will feature replayable physics-based gameplay, loads of twists and will set the stage for the movie.

Learn the Countries of the World with Enigeo

globe[Windows only]

How many countries are there in the World? What are their names? Where are they located? What do their flags look like? If you really want to learn these details, Enigeo (freeware) is great way to learn them.

This program offers two different modes for learning: quiz mode and explorer mode. I have found it very challenging. The best I was able to get in the random country quiz was about 20%. That’s not surprising, considering that it’s been a long time since I studied these in grade school. I’m sure I’ll do much worse when it comes to flags and capitals.

The game will ask you the following types of questions: Name of the country, Capital of the country, Position on the map, and Flag of the country.

It’s a 3mb download and will run on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7. This game is also available in 11 languages: English, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Polish, French, Swedish, Portuguese, and Russian.

Note: There are 192 countries in the United Nations. However, most people recognize two or three more, which include Kosovo, Taiwan and the Vatican. (source about.com)

Techie Buzz Verdict:

This free game is one of the best ways I’ve found to educate children and adults about the basics of geography. It’s easy to set up and run. I give it a big thumbs up.

Angry Birds May Come To The Ubuntu Software Center

Although it had a humble beginning as a game for iOS, Angry Birds has become a huge product now. It is now available for Android, Windows and recently Mac OS X. It is also coming to consoles like PS3, XBox360 and Wii.

It seems like  Ubuntu users may also have reason to cheer as well as the popular game may be heading to the Ubuntu Software Center after the consoles.

The Ubuntu Software Center is actually a GUI front end  to apt-get which allows users, who are uncomfortable command line, to browser, install or remove applications through simple mouse clicks. While most applications available in the Ubuntu Software Center are free, support for paid applications has also been added in the recent release of Ubuntu.

When asked if they have plans of bringing Angry Birds to Ubuntu, the Rovio, the maker of Angry Birds, responded that they are looking into bringing it to the Ubuntu Software Center. Although this is not an outright confirmation that Ubuntu users will get Angry Birds, it is neither an outright denial which makes me hopeful.

Ubuntu already supports multi-touch on appropriate hardware and we may see Ubuntu tablets in the near future. So, maybe Ubuntu will be Rovio’s next target after the consoles.

Download Hero Of Sparta For Android For Free

Remember the Gameloft Twitter Advent promotion under which the company made Dungeon Hunters for Android available as a free download for 24 hours? Today, continuing their Twitter Advent promotion Gameloft is giving away Hero Of Sparta game for Android as a free download for the next 24 hours. While the game is available for free download, the official page of the game still lists it for $4.99.

Users who want to grab their copy of Hero Of Sparta for free need to visit this link from their handset to download the game. On visiting the link from their handset, users will be prompted to download and install a 22KB 100% Free HD Game’ apk file.

The app   then opens up a webpage, which looks exactly like the page from where you downloaded the 22KB apk file, from where users can download the apk file of the game for free. The apk file of the game is 3.07MB big and after installing the game it downloads another 66MB of additional game data.

Here is a video of Hero Of Sparta in action :

Trying any other method/link to download the game may not prove successful given Gameloft’s crappy store. There is another twist to the tale as well here. Not all Android handsets are capable of running Hero Of Sparta. The selected handsets which are capable of playing Hero Of Sparta includes the Google Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid and the HTC EVO 4G. Readers can find the whole list of compatible devices here.

Minecraft “notches” it up with Beta

It’s been indie gaming’s very own rags-to-riches to story (well, approximately at least). When Markus Alexej Perrson, better known as Notch, started work on Minecraft back in May 2009, he had no idea that it’d grow so huge before release that he’d have his own company before the Beta release. The blocky (literally) sandbox game is what I have phrased to a friend as lego for grown-ups. Assuming, of course, that these fine folks are still kids at heart.

However, lego for grown-upsisn’t an accurate descriptor of the game at all, I must confess. But then again, if punching trees for wood, making rollercoasters, USS Enterprises and giant statues of dragons, constructing 8-bit CPUs and portals to the netherworld and, of course,   riding pigs on saddles isn’t up on your list of things to do in a game I’m afraid you’re wasting your time here. Minecraft has been infinitely discussed and the number of videos of it on YouTube exceed Quake’s.

Nevertheless, we aren’t here to read about the game, we are here to know what’s new in the game, aren’t we?

Well, actually according to Notch, there’s nothing major planned for Beta. It’s still going to be the same old game as the latest alpha version. However, a few game changes have been planned and implemented, such as these:-

* Working server-side inventory! (the biggest part of the update)
* Made SMP servers save chunks way less often in most cases.
* Moving too far away from a container, or having it blow up, closes the inventory screen
* Fixed /kill
* Introduced leaf decay again. It acts differently from before
* You can now throw eggs

Oh, and the price has gone up from 9.95 Euro to 14.95 Euro. Also, say bye bye to free expansions from today.

Need For Speed Shift And Spiderman Total Mayhem HD Games Hit The Android Market

It is a very well-known fact that the Gaming section on the Android Market hardly contains quality’ games. Yes, there are some quality games for Android like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja but that’s about it. Gameloft does offer some brilliant gaming titles for Android like Dungeon Hunter, Lets Golf HD and H.A.W.X etc. but sadly the company does not list its games on the Android Market. The company sells its games via its own store which is very very bad.

However, all this is soon going to change as EA has started releasing some quality’ games into the Android Market. Today, the company released the Need For Speed: Shift game into the Android Market for only $4.99. Earlier, NFS: Shift was available exclusively for a few Android handsets. EA also plans on bringing more high quality 3D games into the Android Market next year including NFL Madden 2011.

Here is a video of NFS: Shift in action on the Samsung Galaxy S -:

Need For Speed: Shift running on Samsung Galaxy S

Talking about Gameloft, the company has also released a brand new quality’ game for Android handsets Spider-man: Total Mayhem HD. Users can download the game from the Gameloft store for $4.99. However, looking at the pathetic state of the Gameloft store I would recommend users to stay away from purchasing this game.
