Draw Something To Say Something, The New Addiction For Smartphones

draw-something-omgpop-thumbnailA picture is worth a thousand words. With Draw Something app, it is just one. A new app for the iOS and Android that combines sketching to words is sure to stay here with a certain kind of madness of its own.

Find the right word for the picture you are challenged with and vice versa. Yes, the game is dead simple. All you are required to do is paint or guess. You can challenge anyone from your Facebook or email contacts. You can also create a game with any random user who is also playing the game. Once you are connected you will be asked to guess the word that best describes your partner’s sketch. Or you can just draw something that best illustrates the word you have chosen.

The app has already recorded 20 million downloads in just 5 weeks as told by the developer, OMGPOP’s CEO Dan Porter, to Business Insider. If that number does not make any sense, consider the fact that the popular Instagram has an entire user base of 27 million.

The app certainly has a level of addiction that keeps you glued to it. The fact that simple freehand sketches for simple words can be drawn by any average user is perhaps the key reason the app is already trending high among smartphone users. Also noteworthy is that despite being a two-player game the app is seeing high download score proves that the viral quotient of the game where the user itself is generating the buzz while seeking out for partners to play with. The app has an ad-supported and a premium version. Give it a try and find out how DRAWSOME are you.

Rovio Angry Birds Stores and Theme Parks in China

China is crazy about Angry Birds. There are more than 40 million downloads of the Angry Birds game in China. Rovio, the Finnish creator of the game, already has an office in Shanghai with about 20 employees. It has also opened its first store in Finland.

Nowadays you get anything from USB drives to mooncakes on Angry Birds in China. There is a huge market for Angry Bird items that ranges from regular merchandise to a larger than life-sized Angry Bird games in theme parks.  Angry Birds comes after Disney and Hello Kitty as a top pirated merchandising brand in China. Rovio has a potential market of hundreds of millions and unsurprisingly they have decided to open stores in Beijing and Shanghai.  The CEO of Rovio, Vesterbacka has been quoted saying,

“Rovio chose Shanghai as the first location for an international office because of its unique position as one of the most creative and technologically advanced cities in the world, and also because Rovio wants to show its appreciation to Chinese fans by serving them even better locally”

Here are some pics from Chinanews.com on the Angry Birds game in a theme park in Hunan.

Rovio is looking at these unofficial items for inspiration for its own official products. The Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka has stated that he would not seek legal action against piracy. In fact, Rovio is negotiating with the theme park for a  partnership instead of getting into legal action against them.

Vesterbacka has big plans of the company’s growth in China saying,

“Hopefully, Angry Birds will become the first entertainment brand to have more than one billion fans globally. And occupying the feature phone segment is absolutely a big part of the plan. Every day we are considering buying another company, and that is what we are looking at here in China. We are determined to acquire and hire top-end talent in China”

Dark Legends MMORPG Trailer Teaser Video

A MMORPG game called Dark Legends is all set to be released for iOS, and in 2012 and we have a teaser video trailer of the game for you.

Dark Legends

In Dark Legends Players will embrace the secret societies of vampires to challenge the hordes of undead, werewolves, demons and humans that hunt them. Dark Legends opens with the player recently raised and under the direction of the vampire that sired them. The secret existence of vampires has been exposed and angry, misguided humans are uniting to exterminate the undead plague by any means necessary. Players must work with their clan to survive this brutal new world.

I stand weightless at the mouth of Gallows’ Alley. My enemies tremble before me – cornered, clutching their sacred totems, frantic as they load their weapons and stammer their song of hope.

The Thirst rages in my veins… but I remain patient. Eons of training under Sofia and Lord Ulrich keep the bloodlust from consuming me. The Blood is strong. But, in me, the Blood is disciplined. My Blood is a weapon.

The Blood knows when the moment is right. I soar forward, high above the stones. I fly into my enemies’ reach. Defiant. Crimson razor shears in my hands bounce streaks of moonlight onto the stone walls. A shimmer flashes across the Hunters’ faces. They raise their weapons – slowly, like blood crawling through snow.

They scream…

Dark Legends is set to be released in Q1 of 2012 for iOS, Android and Google Chrome. You can watch the trailer of the Dark Legends game in the embedded video below after the jump.

Rumor: Windows Store Games for Windows 8 Revealed

Reckless Racing

Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Beta) is nearing, and the news and leaks about the same have started flowing fast and furiously. Today (February 7), Tom Warren at The Verge is reporting that a source familiar with Microsoft’s Windows Store plans for Windows 8 has revealed several top notch games which will be made available in the Windows Store for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Full House Poker

Here is the list they have revealed (in addition to Cut The Rope which was demoed heavily at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas):

  • Hydro Thunder
  • Toy Soldiers
  • Reckless Racing
  • Angry Birds
  • Ilomilo
  • Rocket Riot
  • Full House Poker
  • Tentacles
  • Crash Course
  • Ms Splosion Man
  • Wordament

In addition, Warren reports that Pinball and Solitaire will come preinstalled on Windows 8.

Hydro Thunder

As you can see, these games are not only popular, but they are from top tier development houses. This is a good sign for Windows 8, because Microsoft is virtually going to have to start from scratch with their Store just like they had to do with Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. WinRT and Windows 8 are brand new and so is the Windows Store, and it has been well-documented that the most popular “apps” in any ecosystem are games. To have high quality games as well as top tier brands at the time of Consumer Preview, and most definitely at the time of launch is a must-have in order for Windows 8 to gain any kind of foothold in this rapidly approaching Post-PC or PC-Plus era.

What is more intriguing though, is that most of these games are familiar to Xbox and Windows Phone users. Could we see some sort of multi-player scenarios among Windows Phone, Xbox and Windows 8? Wouldn’t it be awesome to play Full House Poker with your friends who may be on their Xbox, and you are on your Windows Phone or your Windows 8 PC? Xbox has already enabled “Cloud Save” with games; could we see a scenario where I can continue Angry Birds on my phone and not lose the progress I have made on my Windows 8 PC? It is so annoying to have to start from scratch every time the game is reinstalled or you install the game on a new device. With the power of the Microsoft Cloud (a.k.a. SkyDrive), we could see games which tap into the Cloud Save concept and allow seamless movement across devices without losing progress.

Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Microsoft Announces ‘Visual Studio Achievements’ for Developers

Need bragging rights as a developer? Don’t have enough points and badges from Xbox Live? Well, Microsoft has the answer for you, Visual Studio Achievements!

In what seems to be an effort to rile developers up through ‘gamification’, Microsoft has announced a beta campaign called “Visual Studio Achievements”. By installing the Visual Studio Achievements Extension, you can unlock badges and earn points by simply writing code that you were already going to write! Analysis is done in the background each time you compile your project to test it. When you hit a certain objective, you unlock an achievement.

Next comes the leaderboard. All the points and badges you earn are tallied into a score and you’re stuck up onto an online leaderboard with all other registered developers who are taking part in the campaign. You can view challenging developer points, avatars and maybe eventually see what they are working on. It would be a great way to get developers to collaborate on ideas and projects.

If sharing your achievements with alike developers wasn’t enough, you can share badges through Twitter and Facebook. This can help you raise awareness for your application, and get recognition from your peers.

There are over 32 different badges you can unlock, from as easy as loading more extensions into Visual Studio, to as hard as having 50 different projects tied to a single solution.

There are fun badges, like the “Potty Mouth” achievements which rewards you for using 5 different curse words in a project, or the “Time for an Upgrade” badge that is unlocked if your project takes over 10 minutes to compile. It’s a simple way to add a level of fun to programming and give developers a way to show off their skills.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Now Available On The Android Market

Electronic Arts, popularly known as E.A, is one of the biggest gaming publishers for all the  popular  gaming platforms including iOS, PS3, PC and Xbox. However, the company has not really been kind to the Android gamers and Android Market. The company only has a handful of games available on the Android Market, and none of them do justice to E.A’s name.

The company did release a few gaming titles including their popular Fifa series, but they  remain  limited to Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play. Today, E.A has finally released one of their popular racing titles – Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit – on the Android Market. The game was already available for Xperia Play owners, and now is available for all other Droid racers to enjoy on their phone as well. While the game might not be as graphically pleasing as its iOS counterpart, it still looks better than most other Android games out there.

Unlike Gameloft’s games, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit supports all the ‘latest’ Android phones with a 1GHz processor and a GPU.  The iOS version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit has been available for nearly 6 months now. Hopefully, in the future E.A and other gaming publishers will simultaneously release games for both iOS and Android platforms.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is available for $4.99 on the Android Market. Here is the market link of the game.
