Samsung Rolling Out Android 4.1.2 Update For Galaxy S Advance

Last year, Samsung announced the mid-range Galaxy S Advance smartphone. It comes with a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, 1 GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, 8 GB internal memory, 768 MB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 and more. Sadly, this handset was shipped with the ageing Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System.

Back in October, Samsung Bulgaria announced that Galaxy S Advance won’t get the Android 4.0 update. Instead, the company will directly roll out the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update to this device. As promised, Samsung has finally started rolling out the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S Advance users. Currently this update is available only for the folks living in Russia.

The latest update bumps the Galaxy S Advance from Android 2.3.4 to Android 4.1.2. It brings the new Samsung TouchWiz Nature UI along with the usual Jelly Bean enhancements, including the smart keyboard, improved voice search, enhanced notifications, improved S Voice, Google Now, new Photo Effect Filters, improved voice and data connectivity and much more.

The latest update can be easily downloaded via Over-The-Air (OTA). You can also manually connect the Galaxy S Advance to your computer and update the device using Samsung’s KIES software. Samsung S Advance users in other countries might have to wait untill March to get this update.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 And Galaxy S Advance To Taste Jelly Bean Instead Of ICS

Samsung Bulgaria has announced that it won’t be updating two of its mid-range devices, the Galaxy Ace 2 and the Galaxy S Advance, to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Instead, the company will be directly updating these devices to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. Both the handsets are powered by the NovaThor U8500 SoC, which was recently demonstrated running Jelly Bean by the ST-Ericsson folks.

This move from Samsung is definitely going to please a lot of Ace 2 and Galaxy S Advance owners. It is  good to see Samsung making an effort to update even its mid-range devices to Jelly Bean.

However, the bad side to this news is that the Jelly Bean update will take sometime to be available for both the handsets. It is also possible that the Samsung Bulgaria spokesperson might be wrong about the Jelly Bean update for the handsets. Until and unless, Samsung Global confirms this piece of news, I’d recommend Ace 2 and Galaxy S Advance users to not get their hopes up too high.

Samsung Announces The Galaxy S Advance; Confuses The Consumer Even More

Samsung has just announced a new and advanced version of the Galaxy S – the Galaxy S Advance. Including the original Galaxy S, Samsung has until now released 4 different variants of the handset  – Galaxy S, S L, S Plus and now the Galaxy S Advance.

The Galaxy S Advance is aimed at the mid-range market, and comes with a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz. It also packs in 768MB of RAM, a 4-inch Super-AMOLED screen with WVGA (480×800) resolution, a 5MP camera with an LED flash at the back, a VGA cam in the front, and the usual bunch of radios and sensors. The display on the Galaxy S Advance is also curved, like on the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, to facilitate easy handling of the phone.

The Galaxy S Advance will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the box, with no clear indication from Sammy whether the handset will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update or not.

Samsung did not mention anything about the pricing of the handset, but since the Advance is a mid-range device, it should cost around $100-150 less than the high-end smartphones.

While it is nice to see Samsung trying to re-define the mid-range market with a dual-core handset, the company needs to realize that it is announcing too many phones, which will ultimately create confusion among the consumers.
