Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Heals Virus Infected Systems

Windows-System-SweeperMicrosoft has quietly released a new security tool called Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper. The product is currently in beta, and is meant to complement Microsoft Security Essentials, which by itself is an excellent antivirus software.

Microsoft has never been good at naming things, and Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper only reinforces that fact. However, Microsoft does have a reputation of developing stellar Windows applications. According to most third party tests, Microsoft Security Essentials is as good as (or even better than) most other antimalware software available in the market. System Sweeper could turn out to be another extremely handy tool from the software giant.

Microsoft-System-Sweeper

System Sweeper creates a bootable rescue disk that can be used for scanning systems without booting into Windows. This can be helpful in getting rid of hard to remove malware, or detecting advanced rootkits. It also makes it possible to run a scan even when Windows has been rendered unusable by malware infections.

System Sweeper is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit flavors, and supports Windows XP (SP3), Vista and 7. It is capable of creating bootable CDs, DVDs, and USB devices. The latest definitions are downloaded from the web; hence, an internet connection is required for creating the bootable image.

Microsoft-System-Sweeper-Create-Rescue-Disk

Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper isn’t a revolutionary product. Most other antivirus vendors have been offering system rescue disks for a long time. However, it’s nice to see Microsoft stepping up its game, and getting serious about offering a comprehensive set of tools for tackling malware infections.

OpenPetra: Administer Your Organization With Open Source Advantage

open-petra-logoOften non-profit organizations or small scale businesses have to buy costly administrative software packages to run their organization. It is a heavy cost burden for such organizations with low budgets. Selected as the “Project of the Month” for the month of May by SourceForge, OpenPetra is an outcome of an effort keeping in mind such organizations.

OM International, a Christian mission agency, wrote a software called PETRA. Developed during the nineties, the package was used in 80 offices of the organization located worldwide. To take the advantage of the open source community and to use the tool for the benefit of others who needed it, OM decided to change it to Open Source development process, which motivated the existing developers and also increased the potential for the software. OpenPetra is the outcome of the newly adopted development process.

open-petra-main-window

The OpenPetra project offers a free and easy to use administrative software package for non profit-organizations. It has multi-user, multi-site, multi-currency, multi-language support and much more. It has six modules integrated into it . The following is a brief description of the modules:

1. Partner Module: The main functions of this module are to manage subscriptions, contacts and bulk mailing as well.

2. Finance Module: This module maintains general ledger, payable accounts, double-entry book keeping, budgeting and donation processing . It has the support for almost all currencies.

3. Personnel Module: This module manages personnel information for both short-term and long-term employees as well as process new job applications.

4. Conference Management: This module manages group assignments, accommodation and allocation, arrangement of arrivals and departures as well as attendance tracking.

5. Financial Development: This module manages project funding.

6. System Manager: This module is used by system administrator(s) to manage user accounts.

From 2004 to 2009, the code was developed code on .NET platform. In June 2009 OpenPetra was published under the GPLv3. Now OpenPetra has standard tools and open source databases for better development and implementation. OpenPetraSetup requires Windows XP (or later) or Linux, and uses about 24 MB of disk space. The backend must be a Relational Database Management System. Currently supported are PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQLite.

An important fact is that the software is modeled after an application that has been in use for an extended period of time in a sizable, global non-profit organization.

Though this promising project has areas of improvement, it has great potential for easing the administration of various kinds of organizations.

Here’s a video showing what these look like in motion.

Warning!

There are plenty of free screensavers and wallpapers on the net, but you have to be careful to visit only safe websites when you are looking for them. As many of you have learned by now, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.

What is MAFIAAfire? Is Mozilla a Terrorist Organization?

mafiaa-fire-logoWhy is Mozilla the target of a take-down notice from U.S. Homeland Security and what the heck is MAFIAAfire?

Back in December of last year, I asked a simple question: is Homeland Security Now Working for the Recording Industry?. In the article, I explained how the MPAA and RIAA (Movie and Music industry groups) have bribed the U.S. Congress with millions of dollars and now have ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), a division of DHS (Homeland Security) in their pockets.

ICE has seized dozens of website domains over the last few months, supposedly to crack down on piracy and copyright infringement. Several new sites were taken down this week and new targets were likely suggested to ICE by the MPAA or RIAA. In a congressional hearing last month, ICE director John Morton admitted that his organization was acting on tips from industry representatives, and other leads.

Here’s what you’ll see if a site was taken down by ICE.

Fly On Desktop – Great Joke or Great Pet?

flyHave you ever had a fly land on your computer monitor or notebook screen? Yes, and you are tempted to swat the little beastie, but you sure don’t want to break the screen, do you? Now you can bring this dilemma to life with a simple program that puts life-like flies all over your desktop.

flyondesktop2

FlyOnDesktop is a 673kb download and installs on WinXP, Vista and 7. Once installed it can be set to run automatically when Windows starts. You’ll find a fly icon in the system tray and right clicking on it lets you set the number of flies spawned at startup.

I found the best setting was one fly. When you see one of these flies on the screen, they look very real. They even walk around the same way real flies do.

Tip: Double-clicking a fly will remove it from the desktop.

Be sure to check out some of the jokes and pranks we’ve written about over the last few years.

Disclaimer: No real flies were harmed during the production of this post.

Send Large Files Easily with WeTransfer

file-share-icoWhat can you do if you want to send an entire CD to someone? Sending large files as an email attachment is usually a problem. Most email providers have limits on the size of attachments. For example, Yahoo’s and Gmail’s limit is 20mb, with Hotmail trailing behind at 10mb.

You could use any one of several online file storage sites, or even set up your own FTP server. These all take time and usually require some setup. There are easier ways to send large files if you don’t want to waste time.

we-transfer

A new service called WeTransfer allows you to attach several files, up to 2Gb in total, and send a download link to a person or group. There is no sign-up required. You can use any fromaddress you wish and include a short message to the recipients.

WeTransfer couldn’t be much easier to use. However, if you need alternatives, take a look at YouSendit, which has been around a long time and is just as easy to use.

I like to use WinDroplr, which allows you to quickly upload and create short URLs to share in email, Facebook or Twitter. It’s fast and easy but it requires you to install a simple program on your PC.

One of my rock-star friends likes to use Box.net to share his unique creations online. It’s free, and you can even mount Box.net as a virtual drive on your PC.

What’s your favorite method for sending large files to people? Be sure to tell us in the comments below.

Comodo Program Manager – Maximum Control of Your Programs

[Windows Only]

Many years ago, I ran into some software from Comodo and I was impressed with its quality. To this day, Comodo continues to offer free system and security software that competes quite well with software you’d have to pay for. Recently, I saw something called Comodo Program Managerand I decided to give it a try.

Parley.im – Great Way To Download Albums And Chat With Your Facebook Friends

Currently, there are hundreds of desktop client for Facebook, but most of them offer the same features, while the rest are not up to the mark. Recently, I found out a new desktop client for Facebook called Parley.im, which not only helps you to chat with your Facebook friends, but it also allow you to download your friend’s photos and albums.

parley im

You can download the Parley.im from the developer’s website. This software requires .Net Framework 2.0. If you haven’t already installed the .Net Framework 2.0, then it will automatically download and install the .Net Framework on your PC. After installing this program, you will need to sign up for a Parley.im account. Then you will have to sign in with your Facebook account and connect it with the Parley.im account. The complete procedure will not take more than a minute.

parley im

Google Talk allow us to stay invisible or busy, but the Facebook Chat does not offer these features. Facebook Chat has only 2 chat modes – Online and Offline. Hence, I would recommend you check out the amazing Parley.im client, which has 4 chat modes – Online, Invisible, Away and Offline. The invisible feature allow you to appear offline to everyone, but you will be able to see who is online. On the other hand, when someone send you a message, they will get an auto-reply stating that you are away or busy, thanks to the “Away” feature.

parley im

Most of the time, the Facebook chat list is not accurate. Some of the friends are shown online in the chat list, even if they have signed out 5 minutes ago. Parley.im solves this problem since it always displays the accurate chat list. It also offers an IM style Facebook Chat with bigger interface and individual windows to chat with your friends. A small popup window alerts you when a friend comes online or when you receive a new mail, requests or comments.

parley im

Facebook does not allow you to download your friends photos and albums, but Parley.im comes with an in-built photo browser which helps you to directly view your friends photos and albums from the desktop. This software also allow you to download your friends photos or albums. You will just need to select the album and it will automatically download all the images from the album to your hard drive. You can also select multiple albums, but it may take some more time to download, depending on the album’s size.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Parley.im is an amazing desktop client for Facebook. Currently, this program is in beta stage, so you might find some problem, while using this software, specially while viewing and downloading your friends photos and albums. Parley.im is more responsive and stable than chating in any browser. It works on Windows 7, Vista and XP.
