Fix Chrome 9.0.597.0 dev Channel Crashes, GPU Acceleration Crashes

If you upgraded to version 9.0.597.0 dev this morning and are seeing frequent crashing of the browser, you are not alone. The problem is that the latest version of Chrome has a problem with the GPU Acceleration.

Thanks to How-to-Geek there are several solutions to fix the GPU Acceleration crashes on dev channel. The one that worked for me is adding "–disable-accelerated-compositing" switch to the command line and start it again.

This problem occurs for only those users who have turned on GPU acceleration in about:flags (previously about:labs), so you might want to go there and disable "GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D" feature for the time being and then try starting the browser without the above switch.

If the command line switch does not fix your problem, you will find more solutions at the how-to-geek’s post linked above.

Fix For iOS 4.2 "No Content" Music Wipeout

Apple released iOS 4.2 to users today and the new software brings in a lot of new changes. iOS 4.2 is also a unified OS across all devices including the , and .

iOS 4.2 No Content in Music

However, users who have upgraded to iOS 4.2 are reporting that the update is wiping out all their music/songs and launching the Music app displays a message saying "No Content" available. This message can come as a shocker to many, but fortunately your music has not been wiped out and there is a quick fix for this issue.

TechCrunch has pointed out to a simple fix for this issue. If you see "No Content" when you launch the music app on the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad, just plug the device into the computer and play a song from the device. Once you have done that sync your device and your songs will be recognized again.

So don’t panic, your music is still there alive and waiting to be heard.

Insert Video From Website Not Available In PowerPoint 2010, Workarounds

is definitely a great improvement from previous versions of Office. One of the features I have liked is the ability to insert videos and audio from websites like YouTube in a presentation (hacks for video insertion in previous office versions).

Insert Video From Website Blurred PowerPoint

However, certain versions of PowerPoint 2010 grey out the option to insert videos and only allow you to insert videos from a file. The problem is that inserting videos from websites is not available in 64-bit versions of Office 2010 or PowerPoint 2010 due to it requiring a 64-bit Adobe Flash installation.

The same feature is available on a 32-bit installation. So if you are using a 64-bit version of Office or PowerPoint 2010 you will be unable to insert videos into your presentation from sites like .

PowerPoint 2010 Insert Video From Web Site 64Bit

Is there a workaround? Yes, there are couple of workarounds. First of all you could grab yourself a 64-bit version of Adobe Flash from Adobe Labs and install it to solve your problem. The 64-bit active-x for Internet Explorer worked for me. However, you must note that the 64-bit version of Adobe Flash is in beta stage and may result in frequent browser crashes, though I haven’t seen any yet.

Another alternative will involve a lot more work than simply using the feature itself. To insert videos in your presentation. You will first have to download the videos to your desktop (resources for downloading videos from internet to your desktop) and then insert it as a file into your presentation.

Hopefully, the Adobe Flash 64-bit player will be available to public in near future, thus solving a problem with inserting web videos in PowerPoint presentations.

Fix “View In iTunes” Link Not Working In Google Chrome For Apple App Store

I have been using primarily for everything these days. However, I have had a peculiar problem with it where I could not load iTunes links in iTunes from the browser. This was causing me lot of headaches since I then had to manually open the links in another browser like or Internet Explorer to download the app or manually copy and paste the name in iTunes or the device itself to download it.

Considering that I download 30-40 apps a week, this was getting to be quite a pain for me, and for several other people too who have been complaining about this since a long time at this Google Chrome bug thread.

If you want to know whose fault this is? Well this is certainly not Google Chrome’s fault but a problem in a browser detection script from Apple. So that aside, how do you fix this? Well, I have quite a few solutions for you here, so you can pick and choose whatever you want.

Solution 1: Apple Browser Detection Fix Chrome Extension

This is the simplest fix that you can use. Just download this called iTunes Detection Fix and store it on your computer. The reason I asked you to download it to your computer is because Chrome will not directly install it. Once you have downloaded the file, either drag it and drop it on a Chrome window and install it or use the File – Open menu to open the file in Chrome.

Hint: Press "Ctrl + O" in Chrome and browse to the file you downloaded to open and install it.

apple_itunes_fix_chrome

Once you have installed the extension, don’t click on the "View in iTunes" button, instead you will see a new option above the app which will ask you to verify whether you have iTunes installed or not. Click on the "I Have iTunes" button and Chrome will prompt you to launch iTunes to open the app.

From next time onwards you will be able to open the app in iTunes by simply clicking on the "View in iTunes" button. If it stops working again, click on the "I Have iTunes" button to launch the app.

Tip: You might want to turn on iTunes Detection Fix extension to work in "incognito mode" so that you will be able to launch apps while you are in incognito mode.

Solution 2 – Changing User Agent for Chrome

If you are not comfortable with the previous solution here is the second one which works too. For this one you will have to change the user agent of Google Chrome to Firefox, Internet Explorer or something else.

To do that download the User-Agent Switch extension for Chrome. Once you have downloaded that, there are two ways in which you can fix the "View in iTunes" link not working.

User Agent Switcher iTunes Fix for Chrome

The first one is temporary and will require you to choose "Mac Safari 4" from the available user agent list whenever you are browsing iTunes. Once you do that refresh the browser and the "View in iTunes" link will work properly and prompt you to open iTunes.

Permanent User Agent for iTunes on Chrome

To make this fix permanent, just click on the "Add permanently" option under the User-Agent Switcher options and the extension will always send "Mac Safari 4" as the user-agent when you are browsing the iTunes web app store.

Tip: You might want to turn on User-Agent Switcher extension to work in "incognito mode" so that you will be able to launch apps while you are in incognito mode.

Solution 3: Use IE Tab Extension

Not satisfied with the above solutions? There is another solution for that.

As I had told you earlier iTunes properly detects the browser and works in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. So a workaround would be to use the IE tab extension and browse the iTunes store using it.

ie_tab_settings_icon

If you want to permanently fix this with the IE tab extension, open it and click on the settings icon as shown above and add http://itunes.apple.com to the Auto URLs section. This will ensure that the iTunes site always opens in IE Tab.

Conclusion

As I told you earlier, the "View in iTunes" link not launching the iTunes application is not a problem with Google Chrome. It is a problem with how Apple detects browsers. users face a similar problem and I will write a separate post detailing how to fix it for Opera. However, one of these solutions will definitely fix your problem with Google Chrome. If it does not, feel free to leave a comment about it and I will try to find another solution for you.

Fix Syslinux No Default or UI Configuration Error While Booting from USB

Quite recently my laptop’s backlight stopped working and I had to start using an older laptop whose HDD no longer works. I created a Live CD USB drive using Pendrive Linux’s utility for Linux Mint.

However, while booting with the pendrive I got an error saying:

SYSLINUX 3.85 2010-02-20 CBIOS Copyright (c) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot:

This error kept happening no matter what I did. I tried to use another USB drive to create a new bootable drive, used different flavors of Linux but had the same problem. I searched around several forums but the solution for it wasn’t easy.

However, I did find the solution and wanted to post it here so that other users who face this problem can find it easily. In order to fix this problem, you will have to plugin the USB drive into another computer and then rename the “isolinux” folder to “syslinux”. In addition to that also rename the “isolinux.bin” and “isolinux.cfg” files in the same folder to “syslinux.bin” and “syslinux.cfg” respectively and try booting with the USB drive again.

If the above solution does not fix your problem, you can try formatting your drive as FAT instead of FAT32. And by the way, I would be getting a Dell XPS Studio 1645 soon, so you can expect a review of the monster laptop soon :-)

Blank Page in WordPress, How To Fix It and Where To Look

If you are a WordPress user there might be a chance that you might have come across a blank screen on your website or blog. For those who are not in the know a blank screen appears on a website or blog running WordPress whenever there is an Fatal PHP Error with a plugin or theme.

Blank WordPress Error Message

Several users might see blank screen in WordPress after they have upgraded to a new version of WordPress, installed a new plugin or changed their themes. Many users are perplexed when they see a blank screen and do not know what to do. However, a blank screen only appears when there is a fatal error while running a PHP script.

The reason users see a blank screen and not error messages is because WordPress hides all PHP related error messages. So the first thing to do after you see a blank screen on your website or blog is to turn on error reporting on WordPress.

To turn on error reporting, login to your FTP server and edit wp-config.php and add this line to it.

define('WP_DEBUG', true);

Once you have added this line to the wp-config.php file, refresh your website and you will see the error messages that are causing a problem with WordPress loading your website.

This will make it easier for to figure our what is wrong with your site. Once you know where the error is, you can delete or remove the offending plugins or have someone look at the error messages to rectify the problem that is causing your site to not load.

Make sure to delete the WP_DEBUG line from the config file after you have fixed the error, or else you might also start seeing PHP Notices and Warnings.

Microsoft Security Essentials is no doubt one of the best Free Antivirus and Anti-Malware solution available today, and just like Microsoft has done a pretty good job with it.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Quite recently I saw a notification to update to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials, however, the update kept failing because of a "0x80070643" Error. This issue kept happening multiple times and I did find a solution for it. So how do you fix the 0x80070643 Error that occurs while installing or updating Microsoft Security Essentials? Read ahead.

There are various reasons why this error may occur, it could vary based on whether you are installing or updating MSE, I will categorize the problems and their solutions.

Microsoft Security Essentials 0x80070643 Install/Upgrade Errors

Cause 1: You might have another Antivirus programs installed while you are installing MSE.

Solution 1:  Uninstall all the other Antivirus programs before installing MSE and try again, this should resolve the 0x80070643 error.

Cause 2: You might be not be using an older version of Windows Installer

Solution 2: Upgrade windows or download the latest version of Windows Installer. MSE requires at-least version 3.1 of Windows Installer or higher.

There may be several other causes why this happens. I will try and update this post once I get to more scenarios and add solutions to it.

How To Fix Adobe Error Code 148:3 Licensing Issue

If you use licensed Adobe products, you might come across an error where starting the product will show you a dialog box saying “Licensing for this product has stopped working” and in the message you will see the Error Code 148:3.

Adobe Licensing Stopped 148:3 Error

Adobe suggests that you restart your computer to fix this issue, however, numerous restarts lead to no solution. Now this might be a really annoying issue if you do not know what to do. However, the solution for this is pretty simple. In my case, I had disabled certain services on Windows which were essential to the Adobe Licensing system.

In the steps below, I will show you how to get rid of this error and also provide additional resources that might come in handy to you if this solution does now work.

How To Fix Adobe Error Code 148:3

The root cause of this problem is that the FLEXnet Licensing Service has been disabled, enabling this service should get rid of the Error Code 148:3. Here is how you can enable the FLEXnet Licensing Service on Windows XP, or .

If you are looking for a software to manage services in Windows you can try out the Services Editor or Service Manager Plus.

Step 1: Press Start > Run and type in services.mscwithout the quotes and hit the Enter key. You can also use the Windows Key + R hotkey to launch the run box.

Step 2: In the services window, find the service “FLEXnet Licensing Service”. If the Startup Type is set to Manual, you just have to start the service and try opening the Adobe application again, you don’t need to follow the rest of the steps. However, you might want to change the Startup Type to “Automatic” so that you don’t have to do this every time. You can follow the rest of the steps if you want to change it to automatically start with Windows.

If the service Startup Type is “Disabled” you will have to enable it, to do that double-click on the service name to open the properties box.

FLEXnet Licensing Service

Step 3: In the available Startup Type dropdown options select “Automatic” and click on the “Apply” button.

Step 4: Once the changes have been Applied, click on the “Start” button to start the service.

Once you are done, click on Ok and close the services manager. Try restarting the Adobe application and the licensing problem should no longer be an issue. If this trick does not work for you, you can read more options at the Adobe Knowledge Base here.
