Quite a few months ago, Nokia had promised that the N900 will get a firmware update which will allow dual-booting to Maemo and MeeGo. The MeeGo OS is the combined effort of both Nokia and Intel. Both the companies intend to use the OS in a variety of devices including MIDs and computer like phones. Nokia has worked hard with developers to port the MeeGo OS to the N900 and the result has borne fruit.
In a blog post on MeeGo.com, Harri Hakulinen has given all the interested users an update about the dual-boot option scenario on the N900. He states that the PR1.3 firmware update will allow N900 owners to dual-boot between Maemo and MeeGo OS. However, Nokia has confirmed that they won’t be offering the dual-booting option to consumers. This option will be limited only to developers.
According to Nokia, this will enable MeeGo developers to develop applications using Qt framework for both the OS’s and test them right on their N900.

As of now, no official change-log is available from Nokia so we need to wait for the N8 users’ feedback on what all changes this firmware brings with it. The firmware update will be available via OTA (Over The Air) or via Nokia Software Updater (NSU).
Since this will be the first firmware update for the N8, I expect it to bring a performance boost, fix some bugs and improve the stability of the device. The Nokia 5800 was the first Symbian S60 v5 based phone from the Finnish giant. Nokia was heavily criticized for the clunky and out-dated S60 v5 UI. However, the 5800 sold like hot cakes all over the world, and still does, thanks to its irresistible price and features like Free Walk and Drive navigation. Due to its popularity, the handset is also very popular among the modding/developer community. Custom firmwares for the 5800 were out for quite some time now.
However, the folks behind PNHT have now managed to port the Nokia C6 firmware over to the 5800. Except for a few differences including the side slide-out QWERTY keyboard on the C6, the internals of both the phones like Processor speed, RAM are totally identical. Users who are interested in installing the Nokia C6 firmware on their phone can check this thread over at PNHT forums.
The Nokia C6 firmware is also compatible with the Nokia 5530. Kudos to the folks at PNHT for their hard work!
