Install Google Chrome Extensions in Firefox with Google Chrome Extensions Manager

Google Chrome’s add-on API is designed to be lightweight and secure. However, the trade-off is that it is not as powerful as Firefox’s add-on platform. As if just to demonstrate this, a Firefox developer has taken it upon himself to implement the Google Chrome API through a Firefox extension.

The Google chrome extensions manager for Firefox does just what its name suggests – it allows you to install and manage Google Chrome extensions in Firefox. The extension is currently a work in progress and only supports a limited subset of the Chrome API.

Techie Buzz Verdict

The concept is definitely interesting, but its practical utility is limited at this point of time. As of now, for almost every Chrome add-on there is a Firefox extension. On top of that, installing new Chrome add-ons isn’t absolutely straightforward. Also, none of the extensions I tried worked perfectly. Nevertheless, I will not be too harsh on it, since it is still in experimental stage.

Use Foobar to Combine Firefox Address and Search Boxes

Google Chrome has become one of the most widely used web browsers within a short span of time. One of its many user-friendly features is that the address box also doubles as a search box. For those of us who unfailingly type in a search command into the address bar of a browser by mistake, this feature is nothing short of a life-saver!   However, all the Firefox loyalists out there needn’t feel left out. With Foobar safely installed, you can now have the benefit of integrating Firefox’s address and search boxes, combining them into one functional box!

Once you install this add-on, every time you type in anything other than a valid URL, (an address having HTTP, FTP or ABOUT), your address bar functions like a search box and you are also given a list of possible choices to select from. Typing in a recognized address, on the other hand, takes you directly to that page. Very handy, right?

Moreover, when using the address box for searches, you also get to choose the search engine to be used. The featured search engines include Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Wikipedia among others. Thus, you experience great flexibility along with dual functionality!

Foobar has the capacity to easily become one of those extensions that you grow so used to that you take them for granted. It is simple, yet rather appealing in its effectiveness. I would highly recommend it to all Firefox users!

How to Add a Right Click Search Menu to Firefox

ff-logo Would you like to be able to highlight words on a page and choose the search engine or a site to look them up? This can be done in most web browsers, but it may not be a built-in feature.

A while back, I told you How to Add a Right Click Search Menu to Internet Explorer.   Now I’ll tell you how to add this to Firefox. Here’s what it looks like:

As you can see above, the word RSSis highlighted on the page. A right click on the highlighted word, brings up the context menu(or right click menu).

To add the Search formenu item, we’ll need to install an addon to Firefox. There are a few addons which add this type of function, but I like the SmartSearch addon.

Do you see all of the search engines listed in that menu? Those won’t be there when you use this addon the first time. You have to add them yourself. It’s easy to do, and the beauty of this is that you can add only the sites you like to search. Nobody will be giving you a pre-made list that they think you’ll like.

Here’s how to add a site to the Search formenu after SmartSearch is installed. I’m going to use as an example.

Go to

When you see the search box, right click on it and choose Add a Keyword for this Search.

Next, you’ll need to fill out the name of the search and add your own short keywordfor it (as shown). You can see that I’ve chosen the two letters DLas the keyword.

Notice that the Folder says Bookmarks Menu. You are actually better off creating a new folder for all of your searches. I chose to call my folder quicksearch.

After saving, you’ll have a new search in your right click Search formenu.

There’s an additional benefit. Since you have a keywordon the bookmark, you can search from your address bar using that keyword. If you want to search for browsersat, just type dl browsers  into the address bar and the results from will quickly fill your page.

Here’s where to install SmartSearchfor Firefox.

Be sure to check out some of the other cool Firefox addons we’ve talked about in the past.

Happy searching!

First time setup

Enable Admin Mode

Techie Buzz Verdict

LimitedSurf is a nice extension to Firefox’s features. It makes Firefox a perfect browser for public computers. But, LimitedSurf (or any other utility) can’t stop users from accessing restricted websites. Users always have the option to create another Firefox profile, and hence they can bypass all restrictions. Still, we appreciate this effort.

AutoPager Automatically Loads The Next Webpage Inline

One thing I don’t like while googling is loading page after page to get next results. Even though there is an option to extend the search results up to 100, sometimes we would like to go further down while making a deep search.

Recently, when I was browsing, I found an amazing addon for Firefox that can help you to load the next pages of search automatically within the window. The addon is called Autopager.

Auto Pager is darn useful when you do searches online. As you reach the end of the page you will be loading the next results in the same page. So, you just need to scroll down through the search results.

How To Use This?

This is just like Greasemonkey or TwitterFox addon. It sits in the status bar. You can enable or disable by clicking on it (the same way you do in Greasemonkey). When you visit a search engine for the first time, it will ask with a pop-up, whether to enable or disable this site from auto paging. For example, check this picture (click to enlarge).

Note: The auto paging will work only if someone has created a auto paging setting for a webpage. I tried for the three popular search engines, Google, Yahoo! and Bing and all of them have the auto paging feature.

If you want to create auto pager for your own webpages, then go through this tutorial on their home site.

This is how it loads new pages. It works for normal Google search and also Google Image Search.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

This is a highly recommended one. I know, even if I don’t tell you to, you will use it. It’s a great help while searching online.

Good News: Google Chrome users, don’t get dejected! This addon is even available for Google Chrome. Go ahead and download it here.

Relive Netscape Navigator

Today we have many good browsers, but just remember old days when we had only few options and Netscape Navigator was the hottest one. Netscape Navigator was the first successful alternative to Internet Explorer, and had set many standards. Unfortunately, the Navigator had to die and thus a leading browser ended.

If you love Netscape Navigator and want to relive it, you have a chance now. Before proceeding, let me introduce you a very innovative add-on for Firefox: Rebrand. As the name suggests, Rebrand rebrands Firefox. You can change the brand name of Mozilla Firefox just by following a simple wizard and create a browser with a name (and logo) of your own choice.

How To Use The Rebrand Add-on For Firefox?

Install the add-on, restart the browser and launch Rebrand wizard from Tools menu. Now, provide details like the new name, logos etc and it will create a xpi file which can be installed as regular Firefox add-ons to rebrand Firefox. You can distribute this rebrand package with your friends too. Though, this add-on is only for fun purposes as actual rebranding and public distribution violates Mozilla’s trademark policies.

Customize Firefox - Relive Netscape Navigator

Developer Michael Kaply has created a rebrand package for Netscape Navigator. To try this, install this add-on for Firefox and it will rebrand Firefox to Navigator. Awesome!

You won’t miss any setting or add-on after installing it, as it changes only display name and logos. To revert back just uninstall the add-on.

How To Copy Selected Text Automatically In Firefox

Earlier this month, we had discussed about an extension for Google Chrome that will help you to automatically copy selected text- Auto Copy. Today, I am going to discuss about the same trick in Firefox.

This is an about:config tweak. To open the preference editor of your browser, direct your cursor to the address bar and type “about:config”. A warning message will appear like this – “This might vide your warranty!”. Ignore the message and enter the editor.

In the filter box, type the following text- “copy”. You will get a preference named clipboard.autocopy. Change the value of that preference from “False” to “True” by double-clicking or right clicking on it. You are done!

I also found a good addon which does the same job. If you think it is risky to edit the preferences you can try this too! – AutoCopy

Multifox for Logging into Multiple Accounts

multifox-logo The Multifox addon for Firefox is a unique solution to an old problem that some of us account gluttons sometimes have.

The problem: Logging into several accounts at the same website, at the same time.

I’ll grant you that this isn’t a problem for most people, but if you are one of the few who have multiple email accounts, Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, or accounts at some other site, Multifox could be your new friend.

Here’s how it works, once it’s installed:

Right click on any browser link, and you’ll see a new action in the menu, Open Link in New Identity Profile.

The link will open in a new window, and you’ll be able to login in as you wish. As far as I know, there are no limitations, on the number of windows you can open this way.

This addon could prove to be very useful to a select few Firefox users. If you are one of these, you know who you are.

Unclutter Your Bookmarks Toolbar with a Toolbar Button in Firefox

If you often bookmark web pages and the bookmarks toolbar gets crowded over time, this bookmark menu extension for Firefox would be immensely helpful. It can turn your bookmarks toolbar into a button, allowing you to access your Firefox bookmarks without requiring you to display the bookmarks toolbar.

Here is how the browser interface looks after you have installed the bookmark menu extension:

As you can see, it’s much better, as all the folders are moved to a separate button. Thus use this extension and permanently hide the bookmarks toolbar in Firefox.(also read: How to create a customized toolbar for Firefox)

There aren’t much options available, apart from searching the bookmarks using keywords. Middle clicking a bookmark opens it in the background and Open all bookmarks in tabsfeature is added in subsequent sub folders.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

The extension is good and helpful if you bookmark a lot of pages and want an easy option to access the bookmarks without using the toolbar. However, the same can be achieved using the Firefox hot key (Ctrl+B) which displays all your bookmarks in the sidebar.

Arrange Firefox Tab In Tree Style With Tree Style Tab

Tabs are really useful while browsing multiple sites in a single window. Most of the times when we open a link in a new tab, we don’t know which one is the parent tab. If you ask me what is the need to find the parent tab then let me tell you that the parent tab helps to understand the relation between its child tabs.

Tree Style Tab provides tree-style tab bar, like a folder tree of Windows Explorer. New tabs opened from links are automatically attached to the parent tab. If you often use many many tabs, it will help your web browsing because you can understand relations of tabs.

Tree Style Tab

  • You can collapse/expand sub trees. It is convenient for too many tabs.
  • When you close a tab which has collapsed sub tree, all of tabs in the sub tree will be closed only one action.
  • The tree of tabs can be shown at rightside.
  • Vertical tab bar can be shown/hidden automatically.
  • You can open new tab between existing tabs, dropping link or URL string there.
  • New child tab can be opened automatically from the location bar, if the website is same to the current tab.
  • You can save/restore the tree of tabs over sessions, by Session Manager or other session-management addons.
  • Drag and drop is available to modify relations of tabs and to rearrange.
  • If you focus to the tab bar, Ctrl-Up/Down/Right/Left can be used to modify tree.
  • Tab bar can bemoved to leftside, rightside, top, or bottom. Horizontal tree is also available.
