We recently received a question asking about a new executable called FacebookUpdate.exe running on a Windows PC and whether it was a virus or not? Turns out that it is not a virus and is an official software from Facebook which is used to update the software which is locally installed on a Windows PC.

Quite recently Facebook introduced a new group chat and video calling along with Group video chat with social hangouts. Facebook asked users to download a software to their local PC in order to use the video calling feature in Facebook.

If you have downloaded the said software from Facebook, you will notice that a file called FacebookUpdate.exe is added to the startup on your Windows PC. The location of the file is in your user profile folder and runs with some parameters as shown below

%USERPROFILE%\Local\Facebook\Update\FacebookUpdate.exe /c /nocrashserver

This service is totally safe and is only used to update the software which was installed by Facebook. If you feel threatened by it, you can disable it without problems. If you are not sure how to disable services or startup items, read our earlier guides and articles listed below.

What are .KMP/.KSF Files? How to Open .KMP/.KSF Files?

Quite recently we got a new Help Desk question where someone asked us about a new file type they had downloaded but could not open. The file had a extension of .KMP and it was the first time they had seen it.

Files with KMP extensions are basically audio files which contain 8 or 16 bit format. The KMP file extension does not contain any audio but references another file format called .KSF which contain waveforms.

KMP file formats are primarily used by Trion and Trinity workstations which are similar to keyboards and are used to create digital music. The KMP file contains data recorded using a Kong synthesizer.

You will information information on how KMP files are created by visiting http://www.korg.com/. To open a .KMP file or .KSF file, you can use a software called Awave Studio which can be downloaded from http://www.fmjsoft.com/awavestudio.html

If you have any future Help Desk questions, please feel free to ask us in our Techie Buzz Forums or by using the contact us form on the website and we will try out best to answer it.

Add New Items to the Sendto Menu in Win7 and Vista

Sometimes a file won’t open in the application you want for it. Normally, you might use the Open withcommand in the file right click menu when you click on a file.

However, if the action you want isn’t in that list, there’s always the Sendto menu.   It’s also in the right click menu for files.

The Sendto menu in Windows is a handy place to store links to all sorts of applications or actions that you rarely use. It used to be easy to add items to the Sendto menu in Windows 9x and Windows XP. Since the arrival of Vista and Win7, it’s gotten a little trickier. I’ll show you one way to do it.

The items in the Sendto menu, are actually links stored in a folder labeled Sendto. The Sendto folder used to be located in the Documents and Settingsfolder under each user name. In Vista and Win7, it’s buried deeply in the Users\Yourname\AppDatafolder, which is normally a hidden folder.

One way to get to AppData quickly is to use the Runmenu, by holding down your Start button and tap the Rkey. Then type in %appdata% and click OK.

Next you’ll have to dig down even further. Go into the following folders under AppData.

Roaming \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Sendto

Now you can see the shortcuts in the Sendto folder. It’s a simple matter of copying or creating shortcuts in this folder in order to see new items listed in your Sendto menu.

The first shortcut I normally add to the Sendto folder is Notepad. Some other apps that you might use there are Paint and WordPad. For the webmasters among you, I’ve also written up a tutorial on adding a Sendto FTPlink.

Not only can you add shortcuts to applications, you can also add shortcuts to folders, drives and network locations. You can even add shortcuts to batch files that will perform specific actions on files.

Sendto is a flexible feature that can serve you well, once you learn it’s secrets.

Techie-Buzz Verdict

The freeware is a nice utility that brings back the Windows XP folder options feature with many other options included within. Apart from changing icons you can also open selected filetype in regedit.  It works perfectly in Windows 7 and Vista. Since the tool is portable, it can be used on any PC straight away without any installation. I recommend this tool as an easy solution for changing filetype icons.
