MyPageKeeper Promises to Protect You from Facebook Scams

Facebook scams are beginning to become a real nuisance. Most of them don’t do much real damage, other than causing some embarrassment, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t annoying. Most scams simply blast the same message that fooled you to all your friends, which helps them in going viral. Some of them might also ask you to fill surveys that profit the scammer. However, only a very few try to distribute malware or spread phishing campaigns.

What makes these scams so effective is the fact that they are fairly hard to spot. Most people implicitly trust anything posted on their wall by their friends. Moreover, it is often hard for people to resist clicking on links promising leaked videos of Bin Laden’s death or the last words of a recently dead celebrity. Facebook scams prey on people’s gullibility and curiosity to get the better of them.

A new Facebook app called MyPageKeeper promises to protect you from Facebook scams. It does so by monitoring your news feed, wall posts, and installed apps. It doesn’t say exactly how it detects a piece of content as spam, but it’s most likely that MyPageKeeper is simply database driven.

Two Ph.D. students in computer science at the Bourns College of Engineering teamed up with StopTheHacker, a web protection service founded in 2009 by Anirban Banerjee, who received his Ph.D. in 2008 from UC Riverside, and Michalis Faloutsos, a professor of computer science and engineering at the university, to create MyPageKeeper.

“Facebook is the new web, said Rahman. It provides a fertile ground to spread malware, since users trust links and posts that are seemingly from their friends. Hackers have realized this, and they have started using it to distribute malware and conduct identity theft.

MyPageKeeper is free to use, and getting started is as simple as installing the Facebook application. It’s designed to work automatically, and proactively. Once you enable it, you don’t need to tinker with it further. However, if you like to tinker with things, then there are a few options that you can tweak. You can specify how aggressive you want MyPageKeeper to be. Obviously, being more aggressive runs the risk of generating more false positives. You can also change how you want the app to notify you about malicious content spotted in your profile.

Faloutsos, who has studied web security for 15 years, believes web security is following the same trajectory as desktop security. Ten years back, people weren’t serious about desktop security, but now almost everyone has an antimalware product installed on their system. Today, most people don’t realize the importance of staying cautious on the web, but in the coming years, Faloutsos believes that everyone will realize the importance of web security. People are educated about e-mail spam, says Faloutsos. But, now there is an implicit trust, almost validation, when someone sees a post from a friend on Facebook.

Beware of Facebook Chat-Jacking Scams

Yesterday, Keith warned us about the Photoshop scam at Facebook, I’ve decided to fill you in on some of the details about this type of  Facebook scam.  So what is Chat-Jacking and why should you care?

What is Chat-Jacking?

While in Facebook, you might get a message from a friend that goes something like this:

Facebook Breakup Notifier Tells You When People Breakup or Are Single Again

Technology is good, but there are certain things which go beyond a line. Take for example a new app which will notify you when someone breaks up.

Facebook Breakup Bug

Now the app does not follow the love of your life around, it relies on the Facebook relationship status of the person you want to track and notifies you when they change they status back to "Single".

You like someone. They’re in a relationship. Be the first to know when they’re out of it.

Once you sign up for the Facebook Breakup Notifier, you can choose the friends whose relationship status changes you want to track. Once you have chosen those friends, the breakup Notifier app will monitor their relationship and send you an email whenever it finds a change. Kind of stalking right?

The app was created by Dan Loewenherz, who is apparently engaged. Wondering how many people are using the Facebook Breakup Notifier to see when he changes his status to single?

Sounds interesting? You can visit and login with your Facebook account to track people.

Facebook Bans Google Adsense in Facebook Apps

Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it will be allowing only a select list of advertising networks on Apps on Only those advertisers who agree to not use user data and have signed the platform terms for ad providers will be allowed to advertise on Facebook.

Here’s the list of approved ad networks. Unsurprisingly, Google Adsense is not to be found on it. Google and Facebook have been at loggerheads over user data sharing, with Google often calling Facebook a walled garden. With these platform policies, Facebook has ensured that no ad provider is able to access user data through any application.

The official statement says that “We will begin enforcing this policy on 2/28, which should provide you and other developers the time required to switch ad providers or to help us sign terms with the ad providers you may be using. We will continue to add other ad providers in the coming weeks. If your ad provider is not on this list, we encourage you to contact them to determine if they are planning on signing our terms.”

Somehow I doubt that Google Adsense is going to make it on the list. Unless, of course, Google agrees to those policies, which I don’t suppose it will.

20% of Facebook Accounts are Infected?

bitdefender-safegoAccording to BitDefender, 2 out of 10 Facebook Walls (or Newsfeeds) are infected or at risk in some way. In October, BitDefender, a well known anti-virus and security provider, launched a Facebook app called BitDefender safego. Safego scans your Facebook wall posts to determine if there are any links to bad apps or risky links. Here’s a quote from BitDefender:

facebook-infectionBitDefender safego > Since its launch,BitDefender safego has managed to scan 17 million Facebook posts and it has detected infections on the news feeds of around 20% of its users. We are glad we’ve been able to warn our users of these threats and we’ll continue to focus our efforts on adding new security features and increasing our detection rate. Thanks everyone for your feedback and remember: if your friends stay safe, then you’re safe!

In addition to all of Facebook’s privacy problems, everyone should know by now that it’s a huge source of infections for Windows PCs. BitDefender apparently decided that it was time to help warn people about this problem.

The free BitDefender safego app is currently in Beta testing, and you can try it out by visiting the page while logged into Facebook. In addition to the link and app checking abilities of BitDefender safego, it also checks your profile for information that you should not be sharing.

I was fortunate enough to get a clean bill of health from safego, can you say the same thing about your Wall? Give safego a try now to be sure.

What Happens When You Use Natter?

Linked Accounts

1. Whenever you update anything on Twitter it will be automatically posted to your Facebook account. On the other hand, if someone comments on the Facebook update, the app auto-posts a @ reply to Twitter with your name and the message.
NOTE: You can also control the tweets to be posted by using a custom hashtag (#) in your Tweet. You can add the custom tag in Natter settings.

2. It automatically converts your Twitter name to the real world counterpart.

3. Natter scans your tweets for links and if found, updates your Facebook account with a new post.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Unlike other apps of its kind, Natter offers two-way linking of your accounts. So if you are a social media addict, it definitely eases the task of updating and replying. Although the cross updating is not real-time, it helps to monitor Facebook & Twitter updates from Twitter only. Go ahead and give it a try. If you are left unimpressed get rid of it.

19% of Facebook Gamers are Addicted, and other factoids.

Of course, it’s all PC Gaming, at the end of the day, right guys?

Facebook has an abnormally large amount of users playing games. Games such as Farmville or Mafia Wars. The annoyance factor of all these games on other peoples’ walls ranges from terrible to depressing. However, just how many of those daily Facebook loggers play games?

According to unofficial Facebook fan-site All Facebook, about 50% of Facebook log-ins are specifically for playing games, with over half of Facebook’s users playing these games.

However, out of these 250 million plus users, about 19% say that they are addictedto these games. A very loosely used term, I’m afraid for addiction, as a medical term, is really serious business. It’s exactly the kind of thing that is overused in the media while debasing video games as a whole. However, since it concerns Facebook, I do not mind it all that much.

Nevertheless, the other statistics are most interesting. 56 million people play such games daily which is most of the UK’s population. The average time per month spent playing games is around seven hours! That’s probably a little less than the amount of time I spend playing every week. Considering that Facebook is a social networking site, this is pretty big.

More facts here.
