Ebay has released its 2012 census, which offers a unique perspective at the state of e-commerce in India. Since, eBay sells pretty much everything under the sun, it’s in an unique position to offer us a glimpse at what Indians are buying and selling. You might be aware that a lot of youths are buying t-shirts and gadgets online, but did you know that every two minutes one note or coin is sold on eBay?
Maharashtra grabbed the top spot in terms of buying and selling stuff online, largely due to Mumbai, which is most active city on eBay India. Other cities in the top ten were Dehi, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Pune. While mobile phones, watches, fragrances, and apparel dominated the list of products sold and bought, most cities had one or two surprise entries.
- Delhi sold a lot of Indian notes, while Mumbai sold loads of Indian stamps. Mumbai also bought plenty of British India coins, and imported British Colonial Stamps. Chinese stamps are #1 on the list of goods imported by Chennai residents. Similarly, Hyderabad is fascinated with Malaysian coins.
- Jaipur, the capital of the desert state Rajasthan, sold loads of room heaters.
- Delhi bought the most chocolates, while Bengaluru exported the most Yoga videos. Kolkatans on the other hand are in love with Tibetian collectibles.
- Top brands in India were Samsung, Apple, Sony, and Nokia respectively.

Spending many long hours on Facebook? Here is a way to earn as you continue social networking.
Have You Seen allows you to post links about products from Boots, Zara, and many more retailers on your wall. Once your friends click on the link that you posted and proceed to purchase the item, you will receive a commission that varies from 5% to 20% depending on the terms set by the retailer.
The site has joined ranks with similar websites such as Topcashback and Quidco, which are eCommerce sites, that provide retailer information to consumers for cashback schemes. With a network of supposedly a couple of million members these sites have the numbers to make social collaboration with retailers successful.
Moving a member from being a consumer interested in thrift into an active participant in the eCommerce chain is the way to go. The laws of scale apply here too. The more expensive an item you get a sale on, the higher is the commission that you will receive. You can sign up for free on the website. The first link that you post will earn you £5 (offer available for a limited time only apparently). Also, this commission can be shared between you and your friend too in certain instances.
This is advantageous for members, as unlike other cashback sites you do not have to spend anything before you start “earning” the commission.
The catch is that you cannot collect the cash that you “earn” until you cross £20. This is a good move on part of the site as it forces members to invest more time and effort in this endevour instead of simply looking at it as an outlet to earn fast money. Patience is a virtue after all.
This is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Its just another way to earn a bit on the side. Oh…and no spamming all your friends on Facebook please.
Bharti Airtel, India’s leading integrated telecommunications company, has launched airtel shop – a one stop destination for mobile handsets, digital TV, and broadband connections at http://shop.airtel.com.
While selling mobile handsets might be a way to push integrated data packs and subscription plans from Airtel, the online store enters a crowded ecommerce market in India with cutthroat competition over pricing and experience. The store also offers broadband and digitalTV connections – a trivial addition to complete the catalog since there would rarely be returning customers for the same.
The store offers handsets from seven brands as of now-Nokia, HTC, Apple, Sony, LG, Samsung, and BlackBerry. I randomly checked prices of few latest phones on airtel shop and flipkart.com and found them to be very competitive, and in several cases lesser at the time of writing. At this moment, airtel shop also offers additional benefits to online customers over walk-in customers on retail counters:
- Upto 33% off on mobile devices with exclusive Airtel plans
- Rs 500 cashback on new broadband connections
- Rs 250 cashback on new digitalTV connections
While the idea of an integrated store for telecom products and services sounds interesting, this clearly looks like a quick and dirty job. It is also a bummer that a store from Airtel doesn’t sell the obvious mobile phone connections and other value-added services apart from 3G connections.
The interface has been borrowed by the Airtel homepage at http://airtel.in and the store is managed by Infibeam, a leading ecommerce store in India. The site clearly states that since Airtel doesn’t sell or deliver mobile phones, the ones ordered on the site are made available and delivered by NSI Infinium Global Pvt. Ltd., an Airtel partner.
Infibeam is known for many firsts in India. Infibeam was the first to launch India’s first desi e-reader, the Pi and followed it up with the iPad competitor – Phi. Well now Infibeam has come up with a new offering called the BuildABazaar on the lines of Amazon’s Affiliate Stores. With eCommerce on the rise in India, BuildABazaar will definitely help entrepreneurs to try their hands at selling stuff online without requiring to get familiar with the much needed tech jargon behing running such e-stores.
The service is currently being offered on a first come first served basis.Interested users may send their details to Infibeam by 7th June 2011 and Infibeam will finally declare the names of the approved users by 10th June 2011. Here are a few features of BuildABazaar which users as well as store owners may find very useful:
- Users can start their own store with a customised brand name of their choice
- Owners will have the option of uploading their own product catalog or feature selected products from infibeam.com on their BuildABazaar store.
- If the user chooses to upload his/her own catalog, then these products will also be made available for sale on Infibeam.com and the owners can get paid via the Infibeam Affiliate program.
- Infibeam will take care of order deliveries and ship orders and the store owners will be paid a commission for all transactions that happen on their stores.
Here is what Vishal Mehta, CEO of Infibeam.com has to say about BuildABazaar:
This launch signifies our largest commitment to empower entrepreneurs including sellers as well as local shop owners by allowing them to create their own online store under their brand. Using our self service platform, every entrepreneur can setup their own branded Online store, upload their own product catalog, select products from Infibeam catalog like Books, Movies, Mobile phones, Electronics, Cameras and start selling with no upfront investment
