The great folks over at XDA have been porting Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HTC Droid Eris. Nevertheless, XDA member punk.kaos has been leading the charge on porting Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the Eris. The most surprising news is that the Gingerbread ROM for the device is very near to a fully working state.

Verizon has decided that the HTC Droid Eris won’t be getting the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update. A Verizon spokesperson told Computerworld that Verizon has cancelled all its plan of bringing Android 2.2 to the handset.

Droid-Life is reporting that the Droid Eris is going to get a software update soon. The software update will not bring Froyo to the Eris, but will improve the performance and enhance some features of the phone.
