The great folks over at XDA have been porting Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HTC Droid Eris. Nevertheless, XDA member punk.kaos has been leading the charge on porting Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the Eris. The most surprising news is that the Gingerbread ROM for the device is very near to a fully working state.
The Droid Eris is a device which is way past its prime. HTC did not even bother to update the handset to Android 2.2. But, this did not dampen the Eris owners’ spirit over at XDA to port Gingerbread on their beloved handset. As of now, Wi-Fi, GPS, Open GL and audio work pretty much flawlessly on the latest version of the ROM.
The first question which came to my mind when I came across this news – Why would anyone in this earth port Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HTC Droid Eris? I still can’t find an answer to this question though. I do understand that not everyone is rich enough to buy a high-end Android phone but Android 2.3 on a Droid Eris. Seriously?!!?
Verizon has decided that the HTC Droid Eris won’t be getting the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update. A Verizon spokesperson told Computerworld that Verizon has canceled all its plan of bringing Android 2.2 to the handset. According to the spokesperson, the reason for this is that Verizon have other options in Android devices, so this is part of the normal evolution of our portfolio.”
This news will surely be heart-breaking for all the Droid Eris customers out there. The Eris never managed to grab the headlines like the other top-dogs Android handsets in the Verizon line-up. Droid Eris owners who want to experience Android 2.2 need to either wait for some modder over at XDA-Developers to port it to their device or purchase a new handset pre-loaded with Android 2.2.
While Eris owners would want the former, Verizon definitely wants the latter to happen!
Droid-Life is reporting that the HTC Droid Eris is going to get a software update soon. The software update will not bring Froyo to the Eris. Instead the software update will improve the performance and enhance some features of the phone. A tipster at Droid-Life managed to get his hand on a leaked screenshot of the upcoming software update from Verizon.
The software update will improve the audio quality and audio control of the phone. It will also enhance the speed dial feature of the phone. The text, video and picture messaging ability of the phone will be improved as well. Other improvements include bluetooth pairing with a Jabra bluetooth headset. Also Droid users can now sync their Gmail contacts with their phone. The Weather/App widget of the HTC Sense UI has been improved as well.
The software update is expected to be rolled out to Droid Eris users at midnight on 17 July. It is nice to see HTC and Verizon rolling out a software update for such an old Android phone. Kudos to them!
Android Mobiles OS has released a new package for the HTC Droid Eris to root the device and upgrade the device from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1.
The HTC Droid Eris root is only for Android 1.5 devices right now. If you use it for anything else, you might brick your phone. Instructions for rooting the Droid Eris can be found at the thefuzz4.net site.
The root for Droid Eris will update the OS to the latest version aka, Android 2.1. Users who run the root will not be able to rollback to Android 1.5 with the current root. Please make sure to backup your phone data and applications before you root the Droid Eris.
