Counter Strike: Source Gets a Facelift

Yes, a proaction gamer will always have his (and in the remote chance that there is one) or her Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 but the giant that is Counter Strike never really had a Counter Strike 2 did it? It received a facelift once with Counter Strike: Source bringing in most of the Havoc physics of the Source engine from Half Life 2. Yet, even with its teeming populace of obsessed gamers, it never felt like playing a next-gen action game.

image

Now, with 144 achievements, lifetime player stats, a cinematic death camera (which I have yet to see) and a domination-revenge system and much, much more, playing Counter Strike: Source with the updated Source Engine 2009 feels every bit like playing a next-gen FPS. Playing it through, however, is just the same. Nevertheless there was some difficulty getting games as the Indian servers I used to play in were not responding or their machines had not been updated to the new CS:S.

Yes, there are inane achievements, yes the scoreboard looks weird and yes there will not be a custom name for your player within the game (your player name will be the same as your Steam community name). With Steam pushing in a 66% discount for buyers as well as introducing Steam Play (i.e. the game can be played on the same servers from a Mac) the game looks set to be bigger than ever.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to hunt for some newbs who have been baited by the 66% discount.

Get Both Deus Ex Titles for $2.49 Each on Steam!

June 22nd marks the 10th anniversary of the smashingly awesome FPS-RPG-stealth hybrid Deus Ex. Built on the basis of real-world conspiracy theories, you take on the role of government agent J.C. Denton as he sent on riskier and riskier missions. Soon he unravels a far reaching conspiracy that threatens the existence and world and trust me when I say that this game has very little clichés on the way.

image

Every mission in Deus Ex has more than one way of going about and for a game released in 2000, this is a big achievement. You could either go gung ho towards your objective, killing anyone and everyone standing in your way, or you could depend on some stealth and sneak through to your objective, or use a backdoor or an alternate route to reach the goal. Add to it nanotech augmentations that make J.C. more than human, and you have the seamless blend of Role-Playing powers and First Person immersion.

But enough of the game true fans will forever remain true fans of this cult classic. Steam is offering both the original Deus Ex and the slightly flawed sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War for a 75% discount! This means that both games are up for a total of $4.98. Go buy this classic this instant and prepare yourself for Human Revolution!

Splinter Cell: Elite Echelon Edition for $46 on Steam!

image

If you are really into espionage and infiltration then the Splinter Cell series would be all too familiar to you. These games bear the trademark name of detailed military insurgency novelist Tom Clancy and are as good as (and in some cases) better than reading one of his novels! Now Steam is offering all the games in the Splinter Cell series ever released for $45.99 on their digital distribution platform! These include the original Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Splinter Cell Double Agent and the acclaimed next-generation sequel to the series Splinter Cell Conviction deluxe edition!

image image image

While the earlier three games are available standalone at $9.99 each, Conviction by itself is $59.99 (deluxe edition) and thus this pack is a great deal!

The Deluxe edition features some great new in-game content including the infiltration mode for extended replayability and co-op fun!

Dawn of War II: Gold Edition for $19.99 on Steam!

image

Oh yeah, this is big. Two awesome RTSs on Steam are up in a bundle pack for only $19.99! Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (DoWII) and Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising are both available for a complete bundle pack. This is really supercool because DoWII by itself is about $50 on its own.

If you haven’t heard about the Dawn of War series, it can be summed up in one word: brutal. Each and every one of the playable races is, in its own way, extremely brutal and violent with generous chainsaw, shotgun, battleaxe and other weapon-filled gore that satisfies the bullied young kid within us. A sampler quote, as always by one Comissar:-

Who told you to die? Keep fighting!

So, go ahead and buy this great bundle pack and start hacking some <insert enemy race here> flesh!

Gratuitous Space Battles Complete Discounted on Impulse

I officially believe that weekend sales are conspiracies against impulsive game buyers like me. So Stardock’s Impulse (that somehow manages to make a pun out of the previous sentence) has put up Gratuitious Space Battles (GSB) complete edition for $20.45 while its original price is $40.92. Why would I buy this inherently complicated sounding game bundle even if its 50% off, you ask? If you ask me, it centers around this line (especially the boldly italicized part):-

GSB also allows you to challenge other players by uploading your best fleets to serve as their opposition, in a massively single-player galactic smorgasbord of laser-death!

image

In GSB, all the battles are automated. The player plans the moves, customizes his/her fleet and their positions before the battle and then sees how well (or how badly) his fleet performs. It’s a single-player only game. However each player can design a fleet and upload it online. Other players can download this pre-programmed fleet and place their wits against another human… in a massively single-player galactic smorgasbord of laser-death!! (I had to use that line. I really had to.)

The complete edition includes the original game and three expansions: The Order, The Swarm and The Tribes expansions!

Half Life 2 and the Orange Box Discounted on Steam

With the release of Source engine on Macs, Valve has decided to push for their entire catalog of Source-based games on the Mac. The games by themselves are nothing short of brilliant with Half Life 2 staying atop Metacritic rankings for PC games not to mention the fact that The Orange Box is also at number 3 (and the original Half Life is at number 4).

image

With a drop in prices and Steam Play announced for most Valve-developed games, many Mac gamers would be interested in these titles and nothing is better than a promo for these great games. With a 30% discount on Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2 there’ll be quite a lot of transactions happening over Steam!

The Orange Box containing all three games, along with Portal and Team Fortress 2 is also discounted by 30% and is available for $20.99 which is a very sweet deal!

Go buy these games and tell us how they work on your Macbook!

Shooter Weekend on GOG.com!

gog

Four classic first person shooters are on a 40% off weekend on our favorite classic games website GOG.com! AquaNox, Postal 2, Painkiller: Black Edition and Redneck Rampage are the four games with a lot of runnin’ and a lot of gunnin’! Needless to say these are the best ways to let off steam from a heavy day or even a heavy week!

aquanox

AquaNox: Though most fans regard this as a flawed sequel to the Aqua series, it is still a decent game to play. Though technically not a run and gungame, it plays a lot like Freespace only it’s underwater!

postal2

Postal 2 Complete: You’re the Dude, dude! Shoot things, buy milk and kill everyone in a queue to return library books! Remember that this hilarious game is only as violent as you want it to be. So while you can play the entire game without (much) bloodshed, you can also play it with unnecessarily large amounts of blood too. Fun!

painkiller

Painkiller: Black Edition: As one reviewer on the game page says, this is the one true sequel to the original Quake. Paying due homage to old-school FPSs, the game is all about level design, insane and horrifying enemy hordes and oodles of shooting fun! It’s a cult hit and the Black Edition also includes the Battle Out of Hell expansion pack for 3.5GB of gaming insanity!

redneck rampage

Redneck Rampage: Crash-land UFOs, cuss at jack o’ lopes in the desert and ride over people in a Swamp Buggy and an armed motorcycle. Oh, did I mention that there was a lot of cussing? Play this hilarious game for weeks of redneck shootin’.

So which games will you buy in the Shooter Weekend at GOG.com?

Kalypso’s Strategy Collection on Sale on GOG.com 50% off!

Ah, those were the days when I used to call up my friends and discuss strategies involving the demolition of a German-controlled dam. Yes, I am speaking of the Commandos games tactical strategy at its finest. There were no scarce resources to be worried about, nor were there buildings to construct and units to train. There were your commandos, and there was the mission and the enemies surrounding it. It was sheer brilliance. Now, GOG.com is selling the Commandos as well as other great strategy titles from publisher Kalypso Media Digital for a whopping 50% off. If you buy a single game separately, you get a 30% discount nothing short of awesome!

CommandosAmmo

Commandos Ammo Pack: Strategy? Ha, Commandos players will laugh in the face of the current strategy. Nothing was more challenging as religiously studying the enemy’s movements, strategizing and executing the entire orchestra in one swift and brutal swoop. Yet, nothing was more satisfying. As the commander of an elite troop of commandos deep behind enemy lines, your missions were of sabotage, skullduggery and assassination. This is one of the best tactical strategies set in World War II that I have ever played. Buy it!

Commandos23

Commandos 2+3: With advancements in graphics, Pyro Studios did not forget about gameplay. Commandos 2 packed the same amount of cunning and challenge as its predecessor did. However, Commandos 3 did not quite live up to expectations with its control problems. Nevertheless they are both excellent games.

ImperialGlory

Imperial Glory: Europe is yours for the taking in this time of strife. Do what it takes to gain Imperial glory as you build, maintain and dominate empires. With all the elements of strategy thrown in for good measure, this is a great game by Pyro Studios.

PortRoyale

Port Royale: ASCARON’s pirate game was in many ways similar to Sid Meier’s Pirates! but had a little more economy management and less action. With 4 different timelines based on real historical events, this game had quite a lot of piracy involved (no puns intended) when it was released.

Praetorians

Praetorians: The Roman Empire, the battlefields of Egypt, Gaul minus Asterix and Italy during the Crusades. The Praetorians has all this and much more as you prepare yourself for a war of domination during the tumultuous times of the Roman Empire.

ThePatrician12

The Patrician 1+2: Do not like battles and warfare? Well, The Patrician games are just for you. Two great trading sims set in the backdrop of the Hanseatic League, maritime trade is your profession and piracy and diplomacy are your weapons!

TropicoReloaded

Tropico Reloaded: Political sim? Ah, yes! Tropico was the definitive political simulation game as you controlled your Caribbean banana republic. Fight poverty, rebellions and the occasional urge to rip away your computer in frustration as a tropical storm hits your shores as you play this game!

GOG.com Adventure Weekend Sale – 50% Off on Two Great Games

I think it is redundant to describe the games on GOG.com as redundant. It is kinda obvious from their name (Good Old Games, for the uninitiated) that their games are old (by the standards of time and not gameplay) and that they are great. These games have aged gracefully and even now are pretty much the best the world of gaming has to offer. So when GOG.com launches a weekend sale of The Longest Journey and Sanitarium it is hard to rein in your excitement. These games are nothing short of AWESOME when it comes to the adventure genre (which is my second favorite genre the first being its focused cousin, the RPG).

LongestJourney

The Longest Journey: One very long game, this game also has one of the best stories around. As April, an 18 year-old art student, you will shift between the reality of Stark and the dream-world of Arcadia. Stepping into each of these realms through portals and doorways, you will have to maintain the balance of these two worlds through your actions. Beautifully written and executed, I bought this game as soon as I found out that it was on sale. Buy it!

Sanitarium

Sanitarium: I remember playing a demo of this game when I was a kid (around ten years ago). I remember the opening sequence of the car crash and the insanity that the world of Sanitarium was. It was both terrifying and interesting at the same time when you grapple with amnesia and see the horrors of the madhouse around you. Then you venture out into the town and… well it is insane. There are no other words for it. It’s an amazing game. Definitely worth a try.
