Google Offers: Groupon and LivingSocial Clone And Future Competitor

A few months back Google had made a spirited offer to buy out Groupon, a website which offered group discounts and send more foot traffic to businesses across the world. Groupon was a runaway success which led to them declining Google’s rumored $6 billion buy out deal. Today Groupon is valued at around $15 billion.

Google Offers

Groupon’s competitor Living Social also has a huge clout in the market. The recent success of selling over 1 million Amazon coupons goes on to show that. So in all, both Groupon and Living Social are huge runaway successes. Google on the other hand is sitting on a huge pile of local advertisers who they want to tap in to, after all there is so much money in the offing.

So would Google just sit around and lurk till they found another sound investment like Groupon? Well, the answer is no. Recently, Mashable uncovered some confidential documents about Google’s new venture called "Google Offers".

Google Offers in a nutshell is similar to what Groupon and Living Social does. It will be offering customers a deal for a limited amount of time at a discounted price. Unlike free local listings for Google search, Google Offers will take a cut of the pie while driving foot traffic to small businesses.

So is this a Groupon Killer? Well not exactly. As Brad from TNW puts it, the offers market is huge. One day you will find a better deal on Groupon, the next on Living Social and the next on Google Offers. So no one is going to kill anyone here, it all depends on how good a deal each of these competitors can offer.

Google has confirmed to Mashable and Search Engine Land that Google Offers is for real and that they are currently talking to small business to test out the product. So you might not see Google Offers deal for the next few months.

Nevertheless, in case of group deal offers, the more the merrier for the customer, since they will have more offers and deals to choose from. This will also be good for businesses too since they will have options and negotiation power since every deal site would want their money. In the end it is a win-win deal for everyone.

So let the competition begin. If you are interested you can view the Google Offers Fact Sheet uploaded by Mashable on Scribd.

The State Of “Indian Shoppers & The Web” – Microsoft Study

Microsoft Advertising & Aegis Media recently conducted a study about how Indians are using the web to supplement their shopping decisions – both on the web and at shops nearby. The study clearly reveals that it is no longer enough to capture consumers only by traditional advertising and companies should start looking at online brand building to sustain their growth.

The study is a part of a global initiative that polled 19,000 shoppers across 17 world markets and considered both in-store and online shoppers in sectors like groceries, apparel, home electronics and fast food.

Here are some key findings from the study:

  • 75 per cent of Indian shoppers use online services to compare prices at local stores and also use the web to find out good restaurants nearby.
  • 66 per cent of shoppers in India use the internet to locate products and brands nearby.
  • 39 per cent of Indian shoppers look for promotions and discounts, deals for their favorite brands while browsing the Internet.
  • Coming to e-commerce, 50 per cent of the Indian shoppers actually make online purchases using their computers.
  • Coming to mobile e-commerce, 31 per cent Indian shoppers make purchases using mobile phones.

With $2 Billion Annual Revenue, Groupon Says NO To Google

Google has been on an acquisition frenzy since last couple of years but not every attempt works out in its favor. Groupon, the social deal giant that has grown exponentially in popularity within last 2 years has rejected an offer by Google. The offer of $6 Billion was one of the largest offers in the internet industry, but Groupon thinks it can do better by staying independent.

Many blogs in the last few days had speculated Groupon’s annual revenue to be around $500 Million, but as it turns out, that figure only represents a single quarter. With $2 Billion in annual sales, Groupon’s decision to say NO to Google doesn’t come as a big surprise. Analysts estimate that Groupon will make an attempt to go public in 2011, but with no official statement from Groupon, its exit strategy is still unclear.

The Chicago-based daily deal startup was launched couple of years ago and now employs around 3000 people with a presence in 35 countries. The site offers group-powered discounts on everything local ranging from food and yoga classes to music lessons and oil changes. There has also been speculation about CEO Andrew Mason’s disagreement with the other two founders regarding Groupon’s exit strategy, but nothing concrete has turned up.

A similar site LivingSocial also recently received a $175 Million offer from Amazon.
