Recently Kaspersky released their 2010 range of products. With all the new security features in the updated suites, Kaspersky also changed the way their applications are activated.
Previously, to activate the software, the user had to input a key file that he’d purchased. But now, following a method similar to that of Adobe and Norton products, users needed to input a string of numbers and get the license validated through the internet.
This method, although decreases chances of piracy of the software, creates an unnecessary hurdle for those users who don’t have an internet connection where they plan to install the security suite.
Incidentally, the WebTrickz blog has come up with a nifty trick that lets you use the old way of installing and activating a license through a key file. You need not knockout anything, or break into any freakish Windows registry. All that you’ll need to do is enter a beta key string (when disconnected), the setup will try to connect to a server and when it will fail, you’ll get an option to browse for a key file. Read the blog post for all the details.

Three Questions, One Answer
- How can you run a virus scan if you can’t get Windows up and running?
- How can you use a different brand of antivirus on a PC that you don’t have administrative rights to?
- How can you run an up to date virus scan on a PC that does not have an internet connection?
Do you have any suggestions?
Free Rescue CDs
In my opinion, the simplest solution is using a Live Emergency Rescue CD. It’s most likely to work in all three cases as long as the PC can boot from the CD/DVD drive.
Many of the leading AntiVirus vendors offer a bootable CD with their brand of antivirus on it. Here is the typical procedure for using them.
- Download an ISO or other CD image file from the AV vendor (See downloads below)
- Burn the image to a CD (How?)
- Insert the CD into an infected PC and reboot
Notes on Use
The rescue CDs that I’ve used often boot up quickly. Once booted, many of them ask you what you want to scan and how you want to handle suspected infections. If you can set the AV scanner to automatically report or remove infections, you can typically walk away from the PC while it’s working and come back after it’s done.
There is one drawback. Most of these rescue CDs can’t be easily updated. If you keep using one too long, it’s less likely to detect the latest infections. I recommend that you always download the latest ISO and burn a new CD. The cost of a blank CD is well worth the extra time and headaches that an Emergency Rescue CD can save you.

We have told you about Panda which is a free cloud-based antivirus, then why bother telling you about another one? Well, ImmunetProtect offers something that Panda doesn’t.
Firstly, ImmunetProtect has been put together by veterans of Symantec and McAfee who know what they are doing when it comes to computer security. Secondly, ImmunetProtect is a community-based antivirus where all users of the community would be instantly warned if a virus gets into even one of the computers.
Instead of traditional updates by the anti-virus companies, the protection in case of ImmunetProtect would be real time. Information about every attack would be recorded in the cloud and users will be able to help others by sharing their experiences.
Here’s what people who made ImmunetProtect have to say about it:
Immunet Protect provides protection by harnessing the collective wisdom of the security products that you already run, as well as knowledge on the applications installed across Immunet’s entire user population.
Here are some key features of ImmunetProtect:
Monitor Application Install:
· Examines all new software applications that are installed on your computer. This includes programs that you intentionally installed, and programs installed by other applications in background such as updates
Monitor Application Start:
· Examines all applications when they begin run on your computer. This provides an additional layer of security by detecting threats missed during their installation.
Active Protection Mode:
· Prevents applications from being installed on your computer until they are determined to be safe. Normally, this determination takes a fraction of a second. If disabled, applications will be installed first, and their security checked later.
You can download ImmunetProtect here.
There has always been a heated debate between the advocates of Free Antivirus Software and the promoters of Paid security software products. The first category of people try to criticize the security software companies like Symantec and McAfee for charging the computer users for something which is freely available from developers like Avira and AVG totally free of cost.
On the other hand, the paid security software vendors say that it is futile and dangerous to expect the free antivirus software makers to put in that much amount of effort and time, which is actually required to combat today’s internet threats. It requires lots of money and time to do the research, and if the antivirus developers do not get the money back and earn profit, you cannot expect them to operate on a serious note.
My own argument is in favor of the the Paid Security Software vendors. And I also want to add here that most of the free antivirus software are actually a stripped down version of their full-blown software, which is often given as an upsell product for promoting their paid version. If these Free Antivirus Software companies start making their Free products equally potent as their main paid product, who will go and buy their full-blown product? It is separate issue that recently launched Microsoft Security Essentials does not fit in this category and looks to be an independent effort to clean the Windows ecosystem, in general.
David Hall, Symantec’s Product Manager Asia-Pacific Consumer Products and Solutions, has recently raised a powerful voice in support of paid antivirus software and blasted that efficacy and utility of free security software. It sure looks like an aggressive marketing attempt in support of his own employers at a crucial time when Microsoft Security Essential is gearing to offer a serious threat to the profit margins of established security vendors, but still, David has a point worth mentioning.
What do you think on this issue? Are free antivirus software equally good as paid antivirus?

Desktop virus scanners are not the only software that will help you scan files that you download, there are several online antivirus engines that will let you upload a file and scan it to see if it contains any virus or spywares.
No Virus Thanks also provides with a easy way to scan files for viruses, however the unique thing about this service is that, once you upload a file it will scan it against 24 Online Antivirus engines simultaneously.
Another interesting feature of this online antivirus engine is that it also allows you to scan files by providing a URL, so if you have suspicions about a software you want to download, you can first scan it and check to see if it is clean, before even download it.
The maximum size of file you can scan using this engine is 20MB, however it can come in pretty handy to scan suspicious files.
