Sprint EVO 3D And EVO Design 4G Taste Ice Cream Sandwich

It’s raining Ice Cream Sandwich update for Android devices. While LG and Samsung have rolled out ICS updates for the Nitro HD and Galaxy Tab 10.1, HTC have joined the bandwagon by releasing ICS updates for the EVO 3D and EVO Design 4G. The update is being rolled out via OTA by Sprint, and should be available to all EVO 3D/EVO Design 4G owners within the next couple of weeks.

Below is the full general change-log of the Ice Cream Sandwich update for EVO 3D and the EVO Design 4G -:

  • Upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)
  • Home screen folders
  • Launch Bar for commonly used apps
  • Improved Android Browser
  • Improved Camera Experience
  • Face Unlock
  • Resizable Widgets
  • Add/Remove Panels

Users can also manually pull the update by going to Settings -> About Device and then selecting the ‘Check for updates’ option from under the ‘Software Updates’ sub-menu.

EVO 3D/Design 4G owners should not expect much of the Holo goodness introduced by Google in Ice Cream Sandwich, in this OTA update. HTC has done an excellent job of keeping the whole UI similar to Android 2.3, all thanks to its Sense skin.

Samsung Rolls Out Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich Update For Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung has been taking its own sweet time to update its devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The company started rolling out the ICS update for the Galaxy S2 back in late-March, and followed it up with the Galaxy Note, AT&T Galaxy Note/S2, and more recently the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

The Tab 7.7 was the first tablet from Samsung to taste Ice Cream Sandwich, thanks to its similar internals as the S2/Note. Starting from today, the Korean company has started rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its first 2011 tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. As of now, the update is being rolled out for the Wi-Fi or 3G variant of the tablet (P7510/7500) depending on the region.

A quick reminder of all the new features in Ice Cream Sandwich include a new keyboard with next word prediction, improved performance and stability, enhanced notification bar, revamped UI elements and much more.

The Motorola XOOM was among the first tablets to get Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, but Motorola did not update the kernel version of the tablet to 3.x. Thankfully, Samsung has updated the core kernel of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the Ice Cream Sandwich update to 3.1.10, which should help improve the overall performance, battery life and stability of the device.

LG Optimus 2X And Optimus Black To Not Get Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Among all the major Android OEM manufacturers, LG has been the slowest in bringing Ice Cream Sandwich update to its handset. The Korean company has just started rolling out the ICS update for the LG Nitro HD, while its other previous-gen droid handsets patiently wait for their turn.

LG had earlier released a list of handsets that it will be updating to Ice Cream Sandwich, which included the Optimus 2X and the Optimus Black. Sadly, LG Canada has annouced via its Twitter account that it won’t be bringing ICS to the Optimus 2X and the Optimus Black.

The Optimus 2X was the first dual-core toting handset to be released to the world, but the company’s poor software support essentially made it a failure. It is nothing but shameful to see a dual-core phone not getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update. On the other hand, the Optimus Black packs similar internals as the Nexus S, which recently got its Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. The Korean company definitely needs to hire some better developers!

Considering LG’s statement that the “original upgrade announcement was a general statement issued from the HQ”, don’t be surprised if the company shelves the ICS update for its other handsets.
