Android: The Leading OS In US Market

Finally, RIM’s Blackberry had to leave its number 1 spot of the leading OS in US smartphone market. Since, Q4 2007, RIM held the first spot but now Android took that position in this quarter (Q2 2010).

NPD’s latest survey reveals that Android took 33 percent of the smartphone purchased in Q2 2010, followed by RIM with 28 percent and Apple with 22 percent. Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD said,

“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers… While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”

The best seller Android device in US was Motorola Droid followed by HTC Incredible. The two brands who are behind Android’s success in US are Motorola and HTC. In Q3 2010 Android will get tough competition from Blackberry 6. It will be interesting to see whether Android keeps the first spot in Q3.

chart

Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 together sums up to 41% of all Android phones in the market (Android 1.5 with 18.9% and Android 1.6 with 22.1%). Android 2.2 made its mark as well with 3.3% share amongst all Android devices.

This graph will change soon during this quarter because many phones with Android 2.1 will be updated to Android 2.2 and few Android 1.6 phones will be updated to Android 2.1. The Nexus One is the only device with Android 2.2 from an official update.

Android 2.1 Captures 50% Market Share In The Android OS Ecosystem

The major problem of the Google Android OS is the fragmentation. People have always criticized the Android OS for its high-level of fragmentation. At the Google I/O conference, Google did say that it is trying its best to kerb fragmentation. The latest report from Android Developers suggests that the measures, which Google has taken, have surely been successful to a certain level. In this latest report, Android 2.1 has the highest market share at 50%. This is a 5% increase from the last time this report was published.

The above data was collected within a period of 2 weeks, ending on June 16, 2010. The data was collected by the number of Android devices, which accessed the Android market.

As it can be seen from the above chart, Android 1.6 and Android 1.5 still hold a major chunk of the market share. Hopefully, with the release of Gingerbread, and the updates of Android OS being slowed down to one per year, the fragmentation issue of Android OS will be eventually be solved.
