Acer Unveils Its First WP7 Phone – Allegro

Acer has quietly announced a new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango running handset, the Allegro. The Allegro is the first ever Windows Phone handset from the company.

This mid-range handset is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T single-core processor, and packs 512MB of RAM along with 8GB of internal memory. The front of the handset is dominated by the 3.6-inch LCD with WVGA (480×800) resolution. At the back of the Allegro is a 5MP snapper aided by an LED flash. The phone lacks a front-facing camera though.

All the usual connectivity features like Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS with A-GPS and HSPA are also on-board. Sensors like Accelerometer, Gyroscope and Ambient Light sensor etc. are also present. The handset will be powered by a  measly  1300mAh battery.

The Allegro will hit the shelves in France in mid-November, and will be priced at around  â‚¬299. The handset will be available in black and white colors. At its current price point, the Allegro is a direct competitor to Nokia’s recently announced Lumia 710. The Lumia is slightly costlier than the Allegro, but offers a bigger screen, faster processor and comes with a microSD card slot as well.

Hopefully, unlike their Android handsets, Acer will meet with some success with their WP7 phones.

Apple Hits New High in US Customer Satisfaction

A new report from the American Customer Satisfication Index (ACSI) reveals that Apple has once again topped the index for PC, making it eight years in a row that consumers have been most satisfed with Apple.  Apple’s score this year was up 1 percent to 87, putting the company ahead of competitors by nearly 9 points. The average score in the personal computer business was tracked at 78 points on the 0-to-100 scale.

ACSI 2011

In addition, the ACSI said that Apple’s computer satisfaction appears to be “unstoppable”. Competing PC makers topped out in 2011 with scores in 70, with HP being the highest at 78.  “In the eight years that Apple has led the PC industry in customer satisfaction, its stock price has increased by 2,300%,” said Claes Fornell, ACSI founder.    “Apple’s winning combination of innovation and product diversification—including spinning off technologies into entirely new directions—has kept the company consistently at the leading edge.”

The data for the report comes from  interviews with about 70,000 customers rating more than 225 companies in 47 industries and 10 economic sectors.

Wait a minute! How on earth is a a company that’s known to be “evil”, doesn’t dominate in marketshare, and isn’t “OPEN” has the most number of satisfied customers eight years in a row? Unreal.

Microsoft Continues to Milk the Android Cash Cow

Thanks to its large stash of patents, Microsoft has been one of the largest beneficiaries of the patent wars currently underway in the smartphone industry.

In an earlier post (Android: Microsoft’s New Cash Cow), I already explained how Microsoft had turned Android into its new cash cow. It was actually on track to generate more than a billion dollars by licensing patents to Android smartphone manufacturers in 2012, and was making way more money from Android than it did from Windows Phone 7.

It has already been getting patent licensing payments from HTC, Onkyo, Wistron, and was in talks with Samsung for a licensing agreement which would net it close to $15 for every Android smartphone manufactured by Samsung.

According to a report by BGR, Microsoft has confirmed that it has signed licensing agreements with two other major Android manufacturers – ViewSonic and Acer. Both the companies make Android smartphones and tablets. Apparently the deal covers not only Android devices, but also devices running Chrome OS.

We are pleased that ViewSonic is taking advantage of our industrywide licensing program established to help companies address Android’s IP issues. This agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercially reasonable arrangements that address intellectual property.said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft.

While these specific deals are unlikely to net Microsoft a lot of money, they do help Microsoft send across a clear message – if so many heavyweights decided to license its patents instead of fighting patent lawsuits, other Android manufacturers should rather directly pay a licensing fee to Microsoft instead of fighting it in the courts, where Microsoft is likely to win.

It’s a win-win situation for Microsoft.
