Sony Playstation 3 Firmware 3.50 Is Out; Supports Playback Of 3D Blu-Ray Movies

Sony has just pushed out a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 which adds support for playback of 3D Blu-Ray movies. Of course to playback 3D Blu-ray movies on your PS3, users need to make sure that they have a 3D compatible TV.PS3 3.50 Firmware update

Other changes in this firmware update includes :

* Facebook Integration: Developers will be able to create PS3 games that have deep interaction with Facebook. Once compatible PS3 titles are available, PS3 users can choose to access their information on Facebook including user name, profile, photos and friends list to enhance their gameplay experience.

* Grief Reporting Function: Users can send claim reports directly from the XMB for any inappropriate messages they receive from other PlayStation Network users. This feature is accessible from the option menu of the messages list in the FRIENDS category.

Users need to set their HDMI setting on Auto, and the PS3 will automatically detect your 3D supported TV and do the rest for you.


Panasonic Brings Dimensions to India: Get Ready For 3D Bollywood Movies

PanasonicWith (most of) Hollywood adopting 3D with open arms, can Bollywood be far behind? Panasonic is obviously confident that 3D will help take the Indian entertainment industry to the next level. The Japanese multi-national held a live demonstration at the Yash Raj Films Studios, which was attended by several members of the Indian film fraternity.

Panasonic’s ‘camera to couch’ range of solutions cover everything from creating and editing 3D content to viewing them at home. Speaking on the event, Daizo Ito, President, Panasonic India, said, “Panasonic has been the harbinger of new technology for several decades now. With Indian creativity getting applauded across the world, it becomes imperative for our company to make available the latest movie-making and broadcast technology in India”.

Noted filmmaker Karan Johar was equally enthusiastic about the launch and said to Times of India, “I am so excited that the 3D technology is now available to filmmakers like myself. It will literally add a new dimension to our story telling and creative expression. We all acknowledge the influence of this medium and with 3D captivating the audience so much more, there is going to be a new revolution in movie making. I’m sure the next 3D blockbuster movie just like Avatar is going to come from India”.

Panasonic will also be organising competitions across India to encourage students of leading film and television institutes to create original 3D content.

Free 3D Modelling Software – Blender 2.53 Beta, Released

The Blender Foundation has just announced the release of Blender 2.53 Beta. Blender is an open-source and free 3D modelling software. It is available for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and Solaris. Blender was used in the creation of a number Open Movies.

Blender is a free 3D graphics application that can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water and smoke simulations,skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, or visual effects.

With this release, Blender has gained a number of new features and improvements.

User Interface

Blender 2.53 Beta has a new clearer, better organized and fully customizable user interface. It also has an updated graphic design and a new icon set. Creation of custom keyboard shortcuts is also now possible in Blender. Key definitions can be grouped in “key maps” and each key map can be fully customized and saved.


Supports for add-ons have also been added in Blender. These add-ons are python scripts which do specific functions and can be installed or uninstalled separately.

Support For 64-bit

Blender already has support for 64-bit systems in Linux and Windows. With this release, it has been extended to Mac OS X too.


In the Sculpt mode drawing and editing performances have been improved significantly. It has also been optimized to reduce the memory usage to support more detailed models. The quality and usability of the brush and stroke system have also been significantly improved. All these improvements means that Blender can now generate more detailed 3D models.

Smoke and Particle Simulation

Blender has a new smoke simulation engine, which can create more realistic smoke. The particle simulation now has a fully interactive animation playback and editing.

Lenovo Unveils Its First Ever 3D Laptop – The Ideapad Y560d

Lenovo today announced its first ever-3D laptop – the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d features a 15.6-inch 3D screen to provide a 3D experience when combined with compatible 3D movies and games. TheLenovo Y560d laptop can be equipped with up to a Core i7 processor, and the ATI HD5730 graphics card with up to 1 GB of memory. Up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM and 750GB of storage space is available on the laptop.

The Y560d also features the RapidDrive technology to combine the performance of an SSD, and the storage space of a traditional HDD to deliver better performance.

While 3D technology has been around for ages, it has not been readily accessible to consumers within the home. The laptop automatically switches to the integrated graphics core for improving the battery life. The laptop is also equipped with an HDMI port. A Blu-Ray player is also optional. The laptop also features SlideNav and OneKey Theather II. The former is an intelligent touch-sensitive slide bar application for easy desktop navigation, while the latter optimizes the laptop for video playback. The Y560d will feature speakers from JBL with Dolby Home Theater surround sound.

The 3D screen, TriDef technology, and the RapidDrive features are all optional. The laptop will hit the retail stores by the end of June, with the base model costing $1,199.99.
