After rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia P, Sony has once again turned its attention to its 2011 line-up of Xperia handsets. The Japanese company has announced in a blog post that starting from this week, it will start rolling out the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia arc S, Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V, Xperia Mini, Xperia Pro, Xperia active and the Xperia ray.
The Android 4.0.4 update will not bring with it any new features or changes on-board, but will include a bunch of bug-fixes along with improved stability and performance. This update should fix most of the issues and bugs plaguing Xperia owners, ever since they installed the original ICS update on their handset.
Sony will also roll out this update to the Xperia mini Pro, neo L and Live with Walkman “over the next few weeks”.
If you are an Xperia user and have not already installed the ICS update on your phone, then you will need to use Sony’s PC Companion software to install the update. If you are already running ICS on your handset, then the update will be available to you via OTA as well, albeit a bit late.
Last week, Sony’s PR commented on a question regarding the Jelly Bean update for its 2011 Xperia devices saying that the handsets won’t be getting the update. Thankfully, Sony has provided a quick update about the Jelly Bean update for its Xperia 2011 devices on its blog today. The company stated that the “local spokesperson gave information in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.”
However, this does not mean that the handsets will be getting Jelly Bean. Sony is still investigating whether its 2011 Xperia devices are capable of running Jelly Bean or not. Here is the full official statement from Sony -:
A quick note – during a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.
We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.
As always, feel free to drop a question below and keep your eyes fixed on the blog, as we’ll be bringing you more on our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones over the next couple of weeks.
Xperia owners, don’t lose hope yet! Jelly Bean might just come to your handset.
