Screenflow for Mac, from Telestream, is a screencasting tool for the Mac that allows the user to capture video from a number of sources at once; screen, a video camera, a microphone and computer audio. The most recent version (3.0) is better than ever making it possible to create professional looking screencast videos in a matter of minutes.

Its uses are broad. It can be used to demonstrate how to use a piece of software, a website or an app. It is great for creating low cost corporate videos to market your company. It makes it possible to produce visually engaging presentation videos, and similarly, many people are using Screenflow to create online training classes.

The interface is simply laid out and easy to navigate. It is particularly easy to use if you are familiar with other editing apps because of the timeline feature. Specifically, there are some features which look and feel like elements of iMovie/Final Cut.

As intuitive as you could hope for, you can drag and drop media from your computer on to the timeline. By dragging the end of a clip when it is on your timeline you can increase/decrease it’s duration. If you right click on any media on the timeline you will be presented with a list of options. Screenflow records high quality video and 3D games perfectly smoothly.

Creative features include a range of transitions, speed adjustment (including freeze frame) and colour correction. One smart feature is ‘callout’; it recognises where particular windows are within your screencast (e.g. a video window open on a back drop of a word document, which would all be on top of your desktop). You can therefore adjust elements of individual windows, e.g. opacity and blur.

This software has been designed with a big awareness of the fact that online video is where it is at and they have made it possible to publish your screencast directly to YouTube.

Finally, you can pause screen recordings – making it possible to take a break mid-recording.
