Flip Toast Is An Awesome Desktop App for Facebook

There are several apps available to access on the desktop, however, sadly I haven’t found anything worthwhile. That is until today when I came across an App recommended by Manan called Flip Toast.

Facebook Notification Flip Toast

Flip Toast is an app based on and is by far one of the best Facebook Desktop apps I have ever come across. The app has a neat interface and provides users with an option to drag and drop images to upload them to Facebook along with giving you an option to catch up with your Facebook feed and also Facebook notifications.

Facebook Upload Photos, Update Status from Desktop

Flip Toast provides and intuitive interface which looks great and does the job pretty well. For example, you can click on the update icon and update your status or click on the photos icon to drag and drop photos and upload them to your Facebook profile.

Flip Toast also display your feed updates through small notification blurbs which disappear after a few seconds. However, you can also like or comment on posts from your desktop itself.

Overall this is one of the best desktop apps I have ever seen, however, make sure to install the app from their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=166111553400149 as the app installer on their website comes with several unwanted things.

Go ahead and use this app, I am very sure that you won’t be disappointed with it.

Chrome Extension for Goo.gl URL Shortener

chromeEarlier today, Amit wrote about the new API for Goo.gI, Google’s URL shortening service. Google launched the goo.gl service in December of 2009. Since that time, many people have adopted it over other URL shortening services such as Bit.ly and tinyURL. The two main reasons for adoption are that goo.gl filters and warns people about bad web sites, and it’s also recently been recognized as the fasted URL shortener.

At first the goo.gl links were only offered in the Google Toolbar. A little later, bookmarklets and other browser add-ons, such as Goo.gl for Firefox,   were offered.

I recently tried the goo.gl URL shortener for Chrome.

The extension installs easily, just as most other Google Chrome extensions do. Once installed, you’ll see a little gray and green icon in the top right corner of the browser.

goo-gl-face

When you are at a website that you wish to create a short link for, click the goo.gl icon to create the short URL. It’s simple to use, but there are also many other features that are offered in this extension.

* short URLs are automatically copied to clipboard
* show goo.gl history and traffic
* add Keyboard shortcuts for posting to other services
* create short URL from right clicking on links
* create QR Codes

You can also create links and automatically post them to your favorite web services, such as Blogger, Delicious, Digg, EverNote, Facebook, FriendFeed, Gmail, Google bookmarks, Google Buzz, Google Reader, Hotmail, Instapaper, LinkedIn, Mail,   MySpace, Netlog, Orkut, Ping.fm, Posterous, Reddit, Read It Later, StumbleUpon, Technorati, Tumblr, Twitter, Yahoo! Bookmarks and Yahoo! Mail.

The only other URL browser extension that I’ve found as useful, is the Shareaholic extension, which has very similar features.

Jealous About Mac App Store? Here Is A Software Store For Windows

Mac users just got a brand new app store which features several apps they can download and use, if you are not happy with it you can always try out some Mac App store alternatives.

Windows App Store AllMyApps

However, what if you are a user? Well, thanks to sites like Download.com and Softpedia, you can downloads and use tons of apps or software as we prefer to call it. However, App stores provide users with a unified experience of software installs, software updates and easy installation. In case of Windows, this experience is hard to get.

All My Apps, an application installer which allows users to install multiple apps at once, which we had covered earlier has now turned into an App store for Windows providing an experience similar to the Mac App Store.

All My Apps Software Installer

All My Apps providers users with a web interface and desktop tool to download and install apps. The advantage of using the desktop software is that it will also check for available updates for installed software. This will make updating software on your computer as easy as clicking a single button.

All My Apps has a big catalog of Freeware which you can download and install for free. The app also provides one-click-installation of software which does away with the multiple-screen software installation you are usually accustomed to. The software also acts like an app launcher, allowing you to launch installed applications by double clicking on it.

Download: You can sign up and download All My Apps for your PC from http://allmyapps.com/.

Techie Buzz Verdict

All My Apps is a really good way to discover new software and keep them up-to-date. However, the software is still buggy as it does not discover the software which was already installed on my PC. However, since the software is still in beta, we can expect these things to be taken care of in the future.

Another nice thing about this software is that it does away with those pesky multiple-screen software installs and replaces it with a single click. However, some advanced users might find the lack of advanced options like changing install directory and removing start menu listing a problematic.

Overall, All My Apps providers users with one of the easiest ways to install new software to your computer and is a recommended download.

Apple Mac App Store Alternatives

Apple launched their Mac Store yesterday (which was apparently cracked), and it has already seen over million downloads in a single day. However, not everything is hunky dory with the app store and it comes with several problems too.

App Bodega Mac App Store

The biggest problem of all is that if you have already purchased an app, you won’t be able to get updates for it through the Mac store and will have to re-purchase the app again. There are several more problems which have been listed out by Life Hacker.

Over at a Reddit thread, several users have been bringing similar complaints to the table. So is the Mac Store your only source for apps? Well, no. There are several alternatives available for the Mac Store out there, which have been doing it for quite some time now.

One of them is App Bodega. App Bodega is a complete alternative to Mac App Store where you can download and install apps and use it as a complete package manager for all your software. App Bodega provides you with an easy way to browse and install apps, along with providing you software updates so that all your software is up-to-date. Bodega also downloads and installs all the available updates automatically if you set it up  to do so.

Another alternative to the app store is App Fresh. Though it is not a market place to buy new apps, it keeps all the installed software on your Mac up-to-date. This is what you won’t get with the current Apple App Store for previously purchased apps.

So if you have been pissed with the new App Store, you can try out these alternatives and see which works for you. After all it shouldn’t be a monopoly.

MiniBin Let’s You Manage Windows Recycle Bin From System Tray

Need to quickly empty the Recycle bin and can’t find the Recycle bin icon on Windows desktop ? MiniBin is a freeware utility which lets you manage Windows Recycle bin following a nifty little system tray icon.

Whenever you delete files and folders from Windows, the file or folder is moved to Windows “Recycle bin” folder, so that you can recover the same file at a later point of time. If you are the type of person who deletes a whole bunch of files every single hour and can’t find the “trash” folder among 52 icons on Windows desktop, MiniBin might just save the day.

There aren’t much options though, you can either empty the recycle bin folder by right clicking the system tray icon or choose to open the Recycle Bin folder, as shown below:

The application is useful when you are working with a lot of open applications and hate minimizing each of them, just to find the Recycle Bin icon on desktop, right click it and empty the trash. Then you have to maximize all the minimized applications to their previous state. Keyboard ninjas might make good use of   “Win key +D” but folks who never want to learn any keyboard shortcut will find Mini Bin useful. [via ]

Techie Buzz Verdict

MiniBin is a portable app, thus will work on any computer from a removable drive without any installation. If you are a coder and always delete a lot of codes only to restore them at a later point of time, get MiniBin today. Useful !

MacX DVD to iPod Ripper – Free for Limited Time

[Windows & Mac]

If you have a portable media player, one of your favorite past-times may watching movies on it. The biggest issue that you might have is getting a movie from a DVD into your device. There is  no shortage of video converters out there, however, not all of them are easy to use for inexperienced users.

macx-dvd-ipod-ripperAfter reading a post at instant fundas, I decided to try out MacX DVD to iPod Ripper. This program is free only until January 10th of 2011. You can only get a copy of it by visiting the Digiarty Facebook page and clicking the Likebutton there.

digiarty-facebook-like-button

Once you’ve Likedthe page, you will be given links to download a free copy of the program. It’s available for both Mac and Windows. Included in the download will be a text file called SN.txt, which will give you the free license serial number. The first time you run the ripper, it will prompt you for the license serial number.

To use MacX DVD to Ipod, you’ll see a set of simple instructions under Getting Started, as shown here.

winx-dvd-to-ipod

1. Click the Discbutton to chose the DVD you wish to convert.

2. Chose the file format from the to xxxtabs.

3. Click the Startbutton to begin the process.

As you can see, it has settings for iPod, iPad, iPhone and Apple TV. However, all the same formats can also be watched on a PC or Mac.

Using the normal settings for a 640×480 MP4, I was able to convert a 2 hour DVD in about 15 to 20 minutes. I found that using the H264 format made the conversion time increase to nearly an hour.

At Digiarty’s home site, they offer a totally free version of this software called WinX Free DVD to iPod Ripper. I tried it out and found that it doesn’t decrypt DVD movies. That means that it’s pretty much useless for most movies.

I could only wish that the MacX DVD to iPod Ripper was free all the time. It’s a great little program that’s pretty easy to use. It’s an ideal piece of software for doing what it was designed to do rip DVDs for iPods and the like.

Put the Newest Free Screensavers on Your Christmas List

[Windows Only]

Christmas is coming fast. I hope you’re ready for it. How about some free Christmas gifts for those geeky friends of yours? The folks at NewFreeScreensavers have just added 5 new Christmas screensavers, bringing the total to 35 Christmas and New Year items.

I’m sure you can find plenty of other screensavers out there, but be careful to visit only safe websites when you are looking for them. As many of you have learned, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.

nfs-35-christmas-newyears

Some these now have transparent backgrounds, showing your desktop with snow and decorations on top. Another nice feature is that they now have settings to mute the sounds. A few of the screensavers also have a setting to include a small analog clock on the screen.

FLUX: Adjust Screen Color Temperature According To Room Lighting

Flux LogoComputers screens are designed to glow as brilliant as possible. A glowing display looks great with the daylight beaming  into your room you are working. While it is quite painful for eyes when you are working at night with the fluorescent lamp on. It is because our eyes adjust according to the room lighting.

It is really frustrating to adjust the screen color temperature every hour of the day just to keep your eyes healthy. Flux is a freeware that is meant to do this for you. All you need to do is download, install the tool and configure the tool settings once. Everything is automatically taken care of afterwards.

Flux Main Window

The tool detects the co-ordinates of your location automatically. In case it is not correct, you can change it by going to the Settings and then set your location. Press the Locate button and you will be taken to a page where you can search for your location and copy the co-ordinates for the same. Paste the copied location in the location window. Press OK.

Set Location for Flux

In the Settings window, you can adjust the day and night lighting settings by using the sliders.

Set Screen Color

Techie Buzz Verdict:

The tool definitely creates a soothing environment for your eyes. However, the app adjusts the screen  temperature  based on the co-ordinates of the location and your choice. This means if you are having a cloudy day, the app will still set the screen for a sunny day. It would have been great if it had an option to judge the room light based on web cam; that would have provided a more realistic solution. All said, I recommend users who work long time on computers to use Flux.

Total Video2DVD – A Friend’s Recommendation

wmp-ico

[Windows only]

Last week, my friend Rick popped into Google Chat with a question.

Rick: Do you have a moment Clif ?

me: Yes

Rick: Perhaps you can help … I have on my external hard drive, a movie that is in FLV format.

me: Ok

Rick: I am looking for a freeware that can transfer it to a DVD, so that I can play in player. Any ideas on a program?

me: No, not really. I rarely burn DVDs. I’d probably Google for ideas. “how to burn FLV to DVD”

Rick: LOL, for once you can’t help me. That is ok.

me: Thanks for asking. Let me know how it turns out.

A few days later, Rick wrote me an email.

Hello Clif, Well I thought I’d take a moment to tell you how I made out. After using Google, installing and uninstalling several programs (all free of course), I was about to give up when a friend stopped over and said … try “Total Video2DVD” .   It worked out fantastic.   It was as easy as a drag and drop. It does have a small water mark on screen unless you register,   Price $35.95.     But I’m able to deal with the small on-screen water mark.

Happy Holidays,     Rick Campbell

I normally don’t post shareware, but it sounds like the free version is usable. Below is a snapshot of the user interface of Total Video2DVD, and a brief description.
