Get Rid Of Facebook Scams and Infectious Links From Facebook

In today’s world of social networking, Facebook is the word of the day. And so is anything that gets posted on it. Every major incident happens and it goes viral on Facebook. Someone updates and everybody else follows the suit. Sharing information has never been easier. However, people with evil intentions are not lagging behind. They misuse this addiction for all the all the wrong reasons.

Recently as Osama bin Laden was shot dead in an US raid, Facebook was scattered with fake links pointing to Osama execution censored video. And the result was obvious. Curious people ended up clicking them and falling prey to it. The more worrying news is that, those links are going to appear again. So what do we do to stop from getting affected? Well, some rational thinking helps. However here is a great free tool that can save you the worry.

Installing Using Protection

Using Protection is a free (for personal use) browser extension for Firefox and Internet Explorer that does the job for you. Google Chrome let me install the extension, although, there were no significant changes to the scam links I tested.

install-using-protection

3 simple steps and you are done. Provide an email to sign up. You will then be prompted to post an update letting your friends know about the installation. This is optional and you can choose to skip this step. Finally, download and install the add on.

How Does It Help?

using-protection-find-fake-scam-link

Every time you visit any page on Facebook, the page will scanned for any suspicious link. Once detected, the link will be removed and instead it will be provided with a link to post an update letting your friends know about it. Yes, it is as simple as that.

using-protection-sitting-silent

The tool performs the job silently without cluttering your screen space which makes it even better. Provided the fact that Facebook is not going to be clean any time soon, the tool is a definite necessity for any Facebook user.

Parley.im – Great Way To Download Albums And Chat With Your Facebook Friends

Currently, there are hundreds of desktop client for Facebook, but most of them offer the same features, while the rest are not up to the mark. Recently, I found out a new desktop client for Facebook called Parley.im, which not only helps you to chat with your Facebook friends, but it also allow you to download your friend’s photos and albums.

parley im

You can download the Parley.im from the developer’s website. This software requires .Net Framework 2.0. If you haven’t already installed the .Net Framework 2.0, then it will automatically download and install the .Net Framework on your PC. After installing this program, you will need to sign up for a Parley.im account. Then you will have to sign in with your Facebook account and connect it with the Parley.im account. The complete procedure will not take more than a minute.

parley im

Google Talk allow us to stay invisible or busy, but the Facebook Chat does not offer these features. Facebook Chat has only 2 chat modes – Online and Offline. Hence, I would recommend you check out the amazing Parley.im client, which has 4 chat modes – Online, Invisible, Away and Offline. The invisible feature allow you to appear offline to everyone, but you will be able to see who is online. On the other hand, when someone send you a message, they will get an auto-reply stating that you are away or busy, thanks to the “Away” feature.

parley im

Most of the time, the Facebook chat list is not accurate. Some of the friends are shown online in the chat list, even if they have signed out 5 minutes ago. Parley.im solves this problem since it always displays the accurate chat list. It also offers an IM style Facebook Chat with bigger interface and individual windows to chat with your friends. A small popup window alerts you when a friend comes online or when you receive a new mail, requests or comments.

parley im

Facebook does not allow you to download your friends photos and albums, but Parley.im comes with an in-built photo browser which helps you to directly view your friends photos and albums from the desktop. This software also allow you to download your friends photos or albums. You will just need to select the album and it will automatically download all the images from the album to your hard drive. You can also select multiple albums, but it may take some more time to download, depending on the album’s size.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Parley.im is an amazing desktop client for Facebook. Currently, this program is in beta stage, so you might find some problem, while using this software, specially while viewing and downloading your friends photos and albums. Parley.im is more responsive and stable than chating in any browser. It works on Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Use Your Android Device As A Side Monitor With A Windows or MAC Desktop

Dual monitor setups are ideal for multitasking. You can move application windows from one monitor to the other, keep an eye on programs like Tweetdeck on the secondary monitor while doing your primary work on the main one. Multiple monitors surely consume a fair amount of desk space but they are actually worth it.

In case you don’t have an extra monitor at home but have an Android tablet or a smartphone, you’re in good company. iDisplay is a simple application for Android devices which lets you use your Android smartphone as an extra side monitor with PC or MAC desktop. You will need a common Wi-Fi network at your home or office to use the Android device as a side monitor with PC or MAC.

Here are the step by step instructions that needs to be followed:

1. On your Windows or MAC desktop, fire up the browser and download the iDisplay desktop client. During installation, Windows firewall will block some features of the iDisplay server, click Allow Accessto grant all the necessary permissions.

2. On your Android device, go to the Android market and install the iDisplay client for Android. The application isn’t free but you can use the trial version of the app for 1 week.

3. Make sure both the computer and your Android device is connected to the common Wi-Fi network.

4. Now run the iDisplay desktop client on your Windows or MAC computer and launch the iDisplay application on your Android device.

5. On the first run, the Android app will automatically detect your desktop computer, as shown below:

Android-detection

6. Tap on the name of the computer and you will see a notification on the desktop computer, as shown below:

idisplay-desktop-app

7. Click Allow Accessand it’s done. You will see the following notification window on your Android device:

Android-notification

8. Click Okand you will see a preview of your desktop screen on the Android device. Drag any program or application window towards the edge of the desktop monitor and you can slide the window into your Android device. Here is a view of Windows Explorer when viewed from my Android phone:

Windows-explorer-android

Using program or application Windows On the Android screen is a bit tricky but once you get used to it, you will love playing with them. There are two ways you can control an application or Explorer window on the Android screen. Either move the mouse cursor from your desktop computer to the Android screen or use Android’s own touch features for minimizing, maximizing and moving program windows from one position to another.

And here is a broader view of my laptop running Windows7 and the Android phone acting as an extended side monitor using iDisplay ( I regret the poor image quality, blame my retro mobile camera).

Android-phone-side-monitor

Note that I can move multiple browser windows from the desktop computer to the Android device. The only downside is that the corresponding size of the window decreases when you slide the window on your Android device. While using a smartphone as a side monitor is not that useful due to it’s small screen size, folks who have an Android tablet can make good use of iDisplay. [ via ]

There are plenty of free screensavers and wallpapers on the net, but you have to be careful to visit only safe websites when you are looking for them. As many of you have learned by now, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.

uTorrent 3.0 Beta Introduces Streaming, Comments, and Ratings

After a pretty long alpha phase, uTorrent 3.0 has finally moved onto the beta stage. In what is possibly the biggest update since the popular torrent client was released, BitTorrent Inc. has tried to make the process of downloading a torrent as simple as possible for novice users, while satisfying the needs of an advanced user.

uTorrent 3.0 features a host of new features. The most significant changes are:

uTorrent-3-Beta

i) Streaming: Unlike standard http files, torrents aren’t downloaded sequentially, which makes it pretty much impossible to start watching a movie while it is being downloaded. However, when streaming mode is enabled, uTorrent will prioritize downloading of chunks towards the beginning of the file to enable the user to view the content as it is being downloaded. This is quite similar to BitComet’s “Preview Download Mode”.

ii) Comments and Ratings: Now, it is possible to rate and comment on torrent files you have downloaded. The idea is that this will help users in avoiding fake and malicious torrents.

iii) uTorrent Remote: uTorrent remote makes it possible to add, delete, and control your downloads from anywhere using the Android app. uTorrent had earlier released an iPhone app too; however, it was banned from the app store by Apple.

iv) Send: With this new feature, you can send a torrent to your friend directly from uTorrent. uTorrent will create a web link for the torrent, and also package the uTorrent client, so that your friend can download the file even if he isn’t familiar with torrents. You can also send files in a similar fashion.

v) Extensions: The new version allows the installation of third-party uTorrent apps, which are nothing but extensions. These apps can do anything from providing access to content like lectures from the Khan Academy, to plotting peers on an interactive map.

uTorrent 3.0 beta boasts of several other improvements including a portable mode, and speed, performance, and stability improvements. You can download the beta from here. However, keep in mind that beta software can be prone to problems. BitTorrent Inc. warns that the 64bit version is a lot more unstable than the 32 bit version.

Microsoft Safety Scanner Scans Your PC For Virus, Spyware and Malicious Software

Over the past couple of years or so, I have used Microsoft Security Essentials as my only virus and malware protection tool. The Free Antivirus tool from Microsoft is definitely worth installing on your PC.

Microsoft Safety Scanner

If you are someone who does not like to install Antivirus on your PC or just want to check whether your current Antivirus is really working well, a new tool from Microsoft will come in handy.

Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free security software from Microsoft which provides users with on-demand scanning while allowing users to remove viruses, spywares, Trojans and another malicious software from their PC. Safety Scanner works along with your current Antivirus software, so you don’t have to uninstall your current AV protection to use it.

One of the bad things about Microsoft Safety Scanner is that it expires every 10 days. Users will have to download a new version to scan your system every ten days which could be annoying considering that it is around 70MB in size. A simple definition update should be added so that users don’t have to download new versions every 10 days.

Users must also note that unlike traditional Antivirus systems the Safety Scanner does not provide continuous protection and should not be used as a replacement for traditional Antivirus software. Microsoft Security Scanner should only be used to additionally scan your PC. If you intend to replace your current Antivirus you might check out our Free Antivirus section to find a suitable alternative.

Beware of the Fake System Tool

malware[Windows]

The other day, I spotted a warning at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. They presented some great information about a piece of malware called    Winwebsec,  which is more commonly seen as “System Tool“. Apparently it’s popping up more often now, so I decided to put out a warning to our readers.

I’ve actually run into this one before, while fixing some of my friends and family’s computers. It wasn’t much trouble to get rid of at the time, but I’ve read that some of the newer versions are more difficult to remove.

An infected computer will start getting fake warnings like the one shown here. These warnings are very realistic. Their purpose is to try to fool you into buying some more fake software that will make things even worse for you.

system-tool-fakealert

I looked around and I found one or two good articles that tell you how to remove the fake System Tool, but I decided to put together my own little guide.  Below you’ll find a slideshow that I’ve put together. It will give you a better idea of what to look for and some suggestions on how to remove this Fake System Tool.

If you can’t see the slideshow here, you can view it at Google.  For those interested, here are some cool technical details about this infectious fake.
