Smartphones have exploded into the cellphone market and have nearly completed a hostile takeover. Now, it’s virtually a given that everyone has a smartphone. The future is here, and it’s glorious. Smartphones are so advanced, in fact, that many who own them are underutilizing them. Take, for example, apps.
Android apps, and apps in general, have gone off in some crazy directions. It’s nearly unbelievable what can and has been accomplished. To help you better understand your phones (lack of) limits, and help you take full advantage of your smartphone, here are 10 amazing android apps everyone should try.
How many times have you lost your cellphone? If you’re anything like me it’s measured not by total times but times that day. My hands love to set down my cellphone without checking with the rest of me. So, it’s a daily task to call my phone and hope I can hear it. With Where’s My Droid, that’s a thing of the past.
Where’s My Droid helps you find your missing phone. With a simple text message it can take the phone out of silent mode and set it ringing full volume. There’s also an online command center that can provide GPS coordinates, pinpoint it on Google Maps, and all sorts of other nifty features. Never worry about where your phone is again.
Astro File Manager is the simplified and easy way to track, organize, and manipulate your files on your smartphone. It looks identical to your PC or Mac, and gives you just as much ease of access and control. Never again fumble through built-in file interfaces and check out Astro today.
You’ve probably seen Swype before even if it doesn’t ring any bells. It’s considered the next step after T9 when it comes to texting. Swype is an app that allows you to keep texting without removing your finger from the phone. It sounds complicated but the system is actually quite intuitive.
4) Barcode Scanner
I remember how cool I thought it was when department stores started added barcode scanners around the store for quick price checks. Well, this makes that look like ancient and outdated technology.
Barcode Scanner, the app, lets you scan any barcode and immediately get product reviews, price comparisons, and general information on the product, from anywhere. Like I said, welcome to the future.
I’m proud to say that I lose my car less than my cellphone. That still, unfortunately, means I lose it quite a bit more than most. The Car Locator app puts an end to that.
Simply save your location after parking and you’ll never need to wonder where your car is again. It uses GPS satellites to point you in the right direction, using a great HUD (heads up display) resembling radar. Really easy to use and quickly becomes an ingrained habit.
Bet you didn’t realize your phone had a built in magnetic sensor. Yup, that’s right. This cool app takes advantage of that and turns your smartphone into a miniaturized metal detector. Admittedly not the most useful thing ever (at least not for me), but definitely still a bragging right. Not to mention how much fun it can be to play with.
Everyone needs to try this on their smartphone. I use this app way more than I originally thought I would. If you have a PC you use with any regularity, the benefits are amazing.
Remote Desktop Client give you access via the internet to your home (or whichever) computer. You’re granted mouse and keyboard controls and full a displayed replication of your computer screen. You can access files, check email, and use your applications. It’s pretty amazing and extremely useful for home PC access on the go.
This is an interesting spin on Google search. It is kind of like a real life Google search. The way it works is you take a picture, and Google does a search based on that picture. Here or some of the things it can identify/do.
Recognize famous landmarks
Translate foreign languages
Recognize famous images (art, books, dvds, etc.)
Add contacts from a business card
These are some of the more useful results of Google Goggles. More are currently underway. Hard to believe, right?
This is an app for all those audiophiles out there. This lets you record and share audio on the go. It’s interconnected to the major social networks and also gives you some ability to manipulate the audio file itself.
Lastly, I had to include this. Pretty much everyone should have heard about this by now but if you haven’t, you really ought to try it out. This is an amazingly fun game where you try and draw a picture of something and have your chosen friend guess the word or phrase. It sounds easy, but can prove to be a fun challenge. It’s simple, quick, and ridiculously fun.
Almost all of these apps have free versions, so there’s no reason not to give them a try. With all the amazing apps and smartphone abilities it doesn’t make sense to use your smartphone as just a phone. So take advantage of emerging technology and enjoy.
